A Petersburg man was arrested by troopers this morning after an investigation into the burglary of a residence and the battery of one of the home’s occupants.

Around 8:43 this morning, Senior Trooper Jarrod Lents responded to Memorial Hospital in Jasper on the report of a male who had been battered earlier in the morning.

Lents learned that Brent T. Miller, 39, Petersburg, had been staying with a friend, Sarah N. Thomas, 35, Winslow, at her Winslow home.

Around 7:00 this morning, Thomas’s estranged husband, Billy D. Thomas, 40, Petersburg, forced his way into the home, went to the bedroom, and began striking Miller numerous times in the face before fleeing the residence.

Lents, along with Master Trooper Scott Miller and officers from the Petersburg Police and Pike County Sheriff’s Departments, located Mr. Thomas at 111 7th Street, Apartment 202, and placed him into custody and charged with – Burglary, Level 3 Felony  and Battery, Level 6 Felony.

He was taken to and lodged in the Pike County Jail without incident.

Miller sustained nasal and facial fractures as a result of the battery. Under Indiana Code, a burglary takes place when a person enters a residence with the intent to commit a felony, which in this case was battery resulting in bodily injury.
