Indiana Conservation Officers arrested a Marengo man Thursday after receiving a report of a burglary.
Police arrested 27-year-old James Richard Raines on charges of burglary, theft and possession of meth.
While off duty, Indiana Conservation Officer Dennis Talley received a phone call from a distraught citizen who had returned home from vacation to discover her house near Leavenworth had been burglarized.
She discovered that someone had broke into her safe and some heirloom and recently purchased jewelry, food, and fireworks had been stolen.
Their investigation led them to the home of James Raines in Marengo. During an interview, Raines admitted to the burglary, but said he had sold the jewelry. Because of the officer’s strong community ties, he was able to locate the stolen jewelry and return it to the owner.
During a search of Raines’ home police found crystal meth and the stolen fireworks.
The incident remains under investigation.
