BREAKING NEWS – STATE ROAD 56 CLOSURE MOVES AGAIN

JUNE 2 UPDATE

The closure of SR 56 has moved approximately 800’ east of most recent closure. The closure is now between the Temple Apartments and the Cobblestone Hotel. We anticipate this area to be closed between 4 and 6 weeks.

As promised, work on State Road 56 has moved to an area east of Country Cookin’. It is blocked so the only way to get around is to take the bypass or Parkview Drive and around by the little league diamonds.

The closure on State Road 56 will move from its current location between Jim Day Road and the bypass to just west of the County Cooking restaurant next Friday morning (MAY 22) as work progresses on Indiana Department of Transportation’s $4,216,800 pavement project at Salem.

Motorists are advised to continue using the bypass as a way around S.R. 56 construction.

Temple & Temple, INDOT’s prime contractor, plans to remove and replace a concrete box culvert during the two-week period following this closure.  Crews will also take up existing pavement and lay new storm sewer pipe west of the culvert.

Pavement removal will be in 100-foot runs.  Plans call for stone to be put in place until asphalt paving can be scheduled.

Residential access will be maintained through the closure site.  Local traffic can enter S.R. 56 at its intersection with S.R. 135 and at Salem Hardwoods.  Many may choose to access their properties via alleys and side streets.

Currently, Temple crews are widening the S.R. 56 roadway on the east end of the project.  A drainage structure has been installed and curbs are being poured.  In approximately three weeks, the closure will be moved again—to a location between the Cobblestone Hotel and the Country Cooking restaurant.

INDOT’s S.R. 56 pavement project extends from High Street to Heritage Chapel Road.  The highway is being reconstructed through Salem and resurfaced in Washington County.  Salem’s portion of the project includes new sidewalks, curb ramps, retaining walls and storm sewers.  The county’s portion will be repaired before repaving begins.  Shoulders will be widened, passing blisters constructed and drainage structures replaced.

MARCH 2015
State Road 56 highway will be closed  between Jim Day Road and the bypass.  The closure allows Temple & Temple, prime contractor for the Indiana Department of Transportation’s $4,216,800 S.R. 56 project at Salem, to excavate at a box culvert installation site.
Work continues between WSLM and the High Street intersection, although that road is open to through traffic.
Motorists will continue to use the bypass to circumvent construction as well as the detour through Parkview Drive.
The closure at Jim Day Road will be in place for up to four weeks.

Over the past several weeks, Temple & Temple has been relocating sewer and water lines between High and Anson Streets.

The scope of INDOT’s S.R. 56 project is from High Street to Heritage Chapel Road.
The state highway is being completely reconstructed through Salem—including placement of new sidewalks, curb ramps, retaining walls and storm sewers.  In Washington County, S.R. 56 is being repaired and resurfaced.  Shoulder widening, construction of passing blisters and replacement of drainage structures is part of that work.
