Purdue University researchers are predicting electricity rates in Indiana will rise about 32 percent by 2023. They say this will happen as demand for
electricity will virtually stagnate.

Demand is predicted to grow by .74 percent a year over the next 20 years. Researchers cite higher rates and a push toward greater energy efficiency as reasons for stagnant demand.

And they blame the projected rise in rates on new federal mercury and air toxic standards, costs associated with meeting future demand and with upgrading existing electricity generating plants.
