With all the turkeys in Salem yesterday morning, you would have thought it could have been Thanksgiving all over again, but the turkeys on State Road 60 were the result of a semi-trailer overturning.

Charles Barekman, 51, Bruceville, IN, was driving a semi truck owned by Harner Trucking, with a load of Perdue Inc. turkeys on their way to Washington, IN when he took the turn from SR 56 to SR 60 a little too fast.
According to Assistant Salem Police Chief Ron Mays, the truck flipped over in the opposite lane. “It looked like he was driving a little too fast. Marks on the road indicate he was trying to over correct,” said Mays.
Police were called to the scene after 10:35 a.m. Monday and officers and clean up crews were on scene for the next six hours.
As far as the turkeys, Mays said some were fine, some were injured and some didn’t survive the crash.
Mays said the driver was taken to St. Vincent Salem hospital with shoulder and head pains. Mays believes Barekman was wearing his seatbelt.
