Eleanor Jane Churchman Smith, 89, of Salem, passed away Saturday, February 13, 2016, at Salem Crossing, surrounded by her loving family. Eleanor was born on October 21, 1926, to the late Fern Hazel Wilson Churchman and Novell Lester Churchman. She was a graduate of Salem High School. On June 28, 1944, she married Lee Edward Smith.
Eleanor had previously served as secretary to the Board of Directors at Smith Cabinet Manufacturing Co., Inc. Through the years, she has served in many leadership positions for her church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She also volunteered with Cub Scouts and Relay For Life. She enjoyed traveling, photography, sailing, reading, playing games, puzzles, crafting, relaxing at her cabin on the river, and spending time with family and friends.
She is survived by her daughter, Terrilee (Bill) Suvak, and her son, Kim (Phyllis) Smith, both of Salem; 7 grandchildren: Greg (Ann) Suvak, Mark (Ginger) Suvak, Eric (Christi) Burnett, Andrea Hardin, Evan (Windy) Levin, Levi Smith, and Kimberly Smith; and 9 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Fern & Novell Churchman; her husband, Lee Smith; her brother, Eugene Churchman; and her son, Mark Alan Smith.
The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, February 18, 2016, at Dawalt Funeral Home with Dr. Stephen Kemker officiating.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday and on Thursday from 9 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Crown Hill Cemetery.
Memorial contributions in Eleanor’s memory may be made to Relay For Life of Washington County or the Alzheimer’s Association.
