Jeremy Elliott, Washington County Historian, and organizer of the newly formed Junior Honor Society, led a tour of a small group of young historians and their parents through the former Hanson Quarry on Salem’s West Side Saturday morning to a long forgotten fixture on the back of the property – Zink Cave.
Chris Schaefer of Hanson Aggregates helped get permission for this special tour for the youth group.
“We just had a movie ask to film here and they were turned down,” said Schaefer. “They don’t let anybody in here.”
The Quarry, which was closed for business about five years ago, is off-limits to the public.
Here is Jeremy Elliott explaining the history of the cave and the Indians who lived here during pioneer times.
