Wednesday morning, at approximately 9:40 am, the Indiana State Police responded to a two vehicle head on crash on State Road 256, just east of State Road 3, which resulted in two people being flown to a Louisville hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

The initial investigation by Sgt. Stephen Wheeles indicated that a 2002 Toyota Corolla being driven by Klodian Smakaj, age 34, Cleveland, Ohio was traveling westbound on State Road 256.

For an unknown reason, Smakaj’s vehicle crossed the centerline into the path of an eastbound 2012 Toyota Prius being driven by Kristopher J. Colen, age 36, Deputy, Indiana.

The vehicles collided in the eastbound lanes of State Road 256.  Colen’s vehicle then left the south side of the roadway before coming to a stop.

Smakaj’s vehicle spun before coming to rest in the middle of State Road 256.

Both drivers were flown from the scene by medical helicopter to University of Louisville Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky for treatment of serious injuries.  Their conditions are unknown at this time.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing at this time.  It is unknown if drugs and/or alcohol played a role in the crash at this time.  Toxicology results are pending.

Sgt. Wheeles was assisted by other troopers with the Indiana State Police, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department, Jefferson County EMS, Stat Flight Medical Helicopter, and Stanley’s Wrecker Service.
