Team Penske was looking for a sweep of the front row of the Indianapolis 500 for the second time in history before Indy’s Hometown Racer Ed Carpenter locked them out.

WSLM 97.9 FM and WSLM 1220 AM broadcast the qualifications Saturday and Sunday and will bring you race activities this week including the races on Thursday and Sunday.

Carpenter, an Indianapolis native, won the Indy 500 Pole for the third time in his career with a four-lap average of 229.618 miles per hour in Sunday’s “Fast Nine” session of Pole Day.

At the time of Carpenter’s run in his No. 20 Chevrolet, Simon Pagenaud was on the Pole with a four-lap average of 228.761 mph in the No. 22 Chevrolet.

Pagenaud’s teammate, Will Power, was in the middle of row one with a four-lap average of 228.607 mph and Josef Newgarden was on the outside of row one with four laps at 228.405 mph.

Carpenter’s first lap was announced at 230.088 miles per hour.

Carpenter was able to keep his foot in it and backed up that big speed with a second lap at 229.808 mph followed by the final two laps at 229.519 mph and 229.061 mph. That averaged to a speed of 229.618 mph over the 10-mile qualification run.

Carpenter was the next to last driver to make a qualification attempt so there was no way Team Penske could score the first team sweep of the front row since 1988 when Rick Mears, Danny Sullivan and Al Unser started three-abreast in that year’s Indy 500.
