Dorothy May Oakes, age 93 of Salem, Indiana passed away Saturday, April 29, 2023 at 6:30 am, in St. Vincent Hospital in Salem, Indiana.
Born July 27, 1929 in New Albany, Indiana, she was the daughter of the late Nolan Smith and Addie (Heinize) Smith.
January 12, 1948 she married Charles Russell Oakes, who passed away June 19, 2016
She was a former employee of the old Bata Shoe Company in Salem for 13 years and the Fines Shirt Factory in New Albany for 5 years.
She was a member of Georgetown Christian Church and was a member of the Blue River Baptist Church since 2017.
Survivors include:
Son: Albert (Sonja) Oakes of Salem, Indiana;
Daughter: Mary Kathleen (Mike) Hayes of Henryville, Indiana;
Daughter: Linda Elaine (Ralph) Quillen of Pekin, Indiana;
Brother: Donald Smith of Georgetown, Indiana;
Sister: Martha Owen of Georgetown, Indiana.
She is also survived by 8 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by 2 Sons, James Oaks and Jonathon Smith and 2 Daughters, Betty Sue Oakes and Barbara McKnight and a sister, Patricia Butler.
Visitation: 4 to 8 pm Monday and 10 am to 12pm Noon Tuesday at Dawalt Funeral Home.
Funeral Service: 12:00 Noon Tuesday at Dawalt Funeral Home with Pastor Brad Moore officiating and the committal and interment will follow the service at Crown Hill Cemetery in Salem.
