The Indiana State Police is investigating the September 15 death of an inmate who was arrested earlier this month on drug-related charges.
61-year-old Stephen Cole was arrested and jailed on Sept. 4 for meth possession and other drug-related charges.
ISP was contacted and requested to investigate by the Washington County Sheriff’s Department on Sept 16.
Detective Baker is lead.
According to ISP Public Information Officer Carey Huls, the open and active investigation shows Cole slipped and fell while getting out of the shower at the jail on Sept. 12.
According to Huls, Cole was checked by jail staff, but when they went to recheck on his vitals after he was back in his cell.
“He was unresponsive in his bed and was rushed to the hospital in Salem and then later transferred from St. Vincent in Salem to Norton Hospital in Louisville where he died on Sept. 15,” Huls wrote in an email.
Huls said police are still awaiting autopsy results.
No foul play suspected at this time, according to Huls.
