Johnny Ray Brough, 78, of Pekin, Indiana, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 16, 2025.
He was born on August 19, 1946, in Salem, Indiana, to the late Paul and Lucille Brough.
Johnny was married to Candice Brough for 40 years. He was a significant presence, raising multiple generations of children and instilling in them values of family. Johnny was a familiar and beloved figure in his small-town community, known by everyone and always recognized wherever he went. As he grew older, his kind eyes and white beard led many to remark on his striking resemblance to Santa Claus, a playful observation that always delighted the children around town. Many in the community affectionately knew him as “Poppy.” He dedicated many years of service, working at Smith Cabinetry and Child Craft in Salem before they closed, and later retiring from Kimball. A man of simple pleasures, Johnny found joy in hobby woodworking, collecting knives, and unwinding with old black and white TV shows, Hee Haw, and The Three Stooges. He cherished the outdoors, particularly through camping and spending quality time with his family. Many will fondly remember him always outside, enjoying a cup of coffee and a cigarette. He had a deep appreciation for old music, with Johnny Cash holding a special place in his heart as his all-time favorite.
Johnny’s memory will be cherished by his loving children, Kristen Voyles (Jeremy Voyles), Michael W. Jordan, Gregory Brough and Zachary Jordan Brough (Shalana Brough). He was a proud grandfather to Skyler Voyles, Heavyn Jordan, Kendra Voyles, and Rosabelle Brough, and great-grandfather to Leilah Voyles and Dakota Jordan. He is also survived by his siblings, Janice Schocke, Carolyn Winslow, Linda Brody, and Larry Brough, along with many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews who will miss him dearly.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Lucille Brough, his son Timothy Brough and his siblings, Donald Brough, Bill Brough, Marilyn Deal and Rosetta Todd.
Johnny lived a life full of love, laughter, and an unwavering presence in the lives of those around him. We find comfort in knowing that he is now resting in eternal peace, in the loving embrace of God.
A Visitation for the family and friends will be held on Thursday July 24, 2025 from 3 to 6 pm at Dawalt Funeral Home.
