Sellersburg Post Welcomes New Trooper

The Sellersburg District welcomes Trooper Cori Shannon following her graduation from the 89^th Indiana State Police Lateral Academy on Thursday, March 19^th.

Trooper Cori Shannon is originally from Buffalo Grove, Illinois and a 2013 graduate from Adlei E. Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, Illinois.  Cori received her Degree in Health/Occupational Studies from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee in 2018 and worked in the healthcare field until 2019.  Shannon was first sworn in as a police officer with the Coldwater Michigan Police Department in 2019 and later moved back to Illinois where she worked as a police officer for the Skokie, Illinois Police Department before applying to the Indiana State Police. Trooper Shannon and her husband, John, reside in Floyd County. 

The 89^th Recruit Class consisted entirely of full-time merit law enforcement officers, all of whom had a minimum of three (3) continuous years of law enforcement service.  Because of that previous training and experience, this lateral academy contained nine (9) weeks of intense training which totaled nearly 300 hours. Some subject areas of training included criminal and traffic law, de-escalation, emergency vehicle operations, defensive tactics, firearms, impaired driving detection, scenario-based training, and a host of other academic subjects related to modern policing.

Each graduating Trooper was assigned to one of 14 State Police Posts across Indiana. The newly appointed Troopers will spend the next three months working side by side with a series of experienced Field Training Officers. The purpose of the field training is to put to practical application the training received throughout the formal academy. Upon successful completion of field training, the new Troopers will be assigned a State Police patrol vehicle and will begin solo patrol in their assigned district.
