Hoosiers Fall to Wildcats in Big Ten Tournament

0

Indiana took the floor at Bankers Life Fieldhouse wearing “Made in March” warm-ups.

Whether their March continues will now be up to the NCAA tournament selection committee, as the Hoosiers exit the Big Ten Tournament in the quarterfinals with a 79-73 loss to Northwestern.

They fell prey to another team fighting to extend its March, as the 12-seed Wildcats continued their run through the conference tournament, punching their ticket to the semifinals against Maryland tomorrow.

The Hoosiers (20-11, 12-6) gave the Cats (18-15, 4-14) all they could handle, as the teams traded the lead eight times and shared it nine times. They struggled to contain Northwestern’s Nia Coffey and Christen Inman, however, who helped the Cats pull away down the stretch with a combined 23 second-half points.

“We know that we could have played much better than we did today, and we’ve seen our group do that,” head coach Teri Moren said. “You don’t win 20 games in one of the best conferences in the country, get a high seed like we did, top four, without playing some really good basketball.”

Coffey led all scorers with 26 points, adding 11 rebounds and four blocks and frustrated the Hoosiers defensively as she shouldered Northwestern to its third win in as many days.

“We didn’t have an answer for Nia Coffey,” sophomore guard Tyra Buss said. “She kind of just could take any shot she wanted.”

The Hoosiers looked to regain the momentum for a split-second on a SportsCenter-like play by Amanda Cahill with .5 seconds remaining in the third quarter. The sophomore forward managed to get up a shot in .2 seconds off the inbounds while getting fouled.

She made it without looking, tossing the ball behind her back to pull the Hoosiers within one possession to start the final period. The Cats responded by hitting 7-of-9 shots to start the fourth quarter.

Cahill again brought Indiana to within four, hitting a trey with 33.6 seconds remaining. But it wasn’t enough time to erase the deficit, as the clock expired to end Indiana’s run at a Big Ten Championship.

“We needed something like that to change the rhythm, to change our enthusiasm and our energy level, and I thought maybe that play with Cahill, which was huge, would help us,” Moren said. “We’ve been really good in the fourth quarter.”

Cahill posted her 11th double-double of the season with a team-high 23 points and 13 rebounds, moving her into eighth on the program’s all-time list for single season rebounds with 268.

She was followed by Buss, who scored in double figures for her 35th consecutive game with 16 points and connected on 8-of-9 from the free-throw line to set an Indiana school record for single season free-throws at 195.

In a scary moment in the first half, Indiana looked as though it might be without its leading scorer as Buss hit the floor hard and lay writhing in pain for several minutes.

Less than 40 seconds after taking the bench, however, she was back in the game.

“I knew she was going to play,” Moren said. “She’s extremely tough, and it was just a matter of time before she shook the thing off and got back in. There was nothing that was going to keep that kid from playing in this game.”

Despite their performance in the conference tournament, the Hoosiers are confident in their NCAA Tournament resume as they will await the tournament selection show on March 14.

The decision of whether the Hoosiers’ March will continue is out of their hands.

But this group knows what it has accomplished. One loss in the Big Ten Tournament doesn’t change that.

“Today we didn’t play our best game,” Cahill said.

“But we think that throughout the season we’ve proved that we deserve to be in that spot, in the top 64 teams in the country.”

Lions Rout Braves In 65-63 Sectional Semi-Final; Salem Playing For Championship Saturday

0

The Salem Lions broke out of tonight’s Class 3A Sectional 30 matchup with perennial foe Brownstown, with a 7-0 start.

The Lions outpaced the Braves, 28-24 at the half and at one point with about 3 minutes left, were leading by 6 points.

Missed shots and turnovers got the Braves within 2 and then the game tied at 63-63. Xavier Haendiges scored the buzzer-beater shot to lift the Lions over the Braves.

The Lions last won a sectional title in 2009 in a win over Crawford County.

Salem has made only three appearances in IHSAA regionals – the first in 1930 against Bedford; then in 1939 against New Albany and finally in 1971 against Huntingburg.

Brownstown last won a sectional title in 2013 in a game against Charlestown.

The Braves made it to the regionals in 2004 and 2009 – both times against Southridge. They went on to semi-state both of those years – playing Bedford in 2004 and Southport in 2009.

Salem will play the winner of the second semi-final game — Charlestown [16-7] vs. Silver Creek [19-4] tomorrow night at 7p.

Mark “Bubba” Abbott and Jason Pepmeier will be calling the game on WSLM 97.9 FM.

Holcomb Sworn In As New Lt. Governor

0

Former Indiana Republican chairman Eric Holcomb has been sworn in as the state’s new lieutenant governor.

Holcomb took the oath of office during a Statehouse ceremony Thursday afternoon, a few hours after the Indiana House and Senate confirmed his nomination by Gov. Mike Pence.

The state Senate voted 50-0 shortly after the House voted 91-3 Thursday morning to approve Pence’s pick of Holcomb.

Holcomb replaces Sue Ellspermann in a rare midterm transition for the state’s No. 2 office.

Pence cited Holcomb’s experience as a top aide to former Gov. Daniels and U.S. Sen. Dan Coats as helping prepare him for the position.

Ellspermann resigned from office Wednesday and is applying to become Ivy Tech Community College‘s new president.download

Senator Dan Coats (R-Ind.) today released the following statement regarding the resignation of Lieutenant Governor Sue Ellspermann:

“I want to thank Lieutenant Governor Sue Ellspermann for her service to the state of Indiana. She represented Hoosiers with integrity and worked tirelessly to ensure that Indiana is a great place to work, raise a family and call home. Sue has a bright future ahead of her, and I know she will continue to effectively serve Hoosiers in the next steps of her career.”

Upon the Indiana General Assembly’s confirmation of Eric Holcomb as Lieutenant Governor, following the resignation of Lieutenant Governor Sue Ellspermann, Indiana Auditor of State Suzanne Crouch released the following statement:

“It has truly been an honor to serve with Sue Ellspermann as a member of the Indiana House of Representatives and in her capacity as the State’s second-in-command. I’ve seen first-hand her thoughtful, capable leadership and passion for serving Hoosiers. I’m thankful for her outstanding service as Indiana’s 50th Lieutenant Governor and I wish her all the best in her future endeavors.

“I extend my congratulations to Eric Holcomb as he takes the oath as Indiana’s Lieutenant Governor. His background and experience will benefit him as he serves our State and continues the tradition of excellence Hoosiers have come to expect from the office. I wish him success and look forward to working with him in his new role.”

A tip to the Washington County Sheriff’s Department led to the arrest of a Washington County man Tuesday night on Marijuana charges.

ace314c8-04ba-4950-a01c-922da5d8ac62

According to Deputy Brad Naugle, a tip regarding illegal drug activity was reported Wednesday at 7:25p.

Naugle responded to 10262 South Palmyra Road and asked Richard Collard, 48, for permission to search the property.

Collard agreed and Naugle found marijuana.

Collard was arrested and booked into the Washington County Detention Center on charges of Possession of Marijuana, a Class D Misdemeanor and Maintaining a Common Nuisance.

Cozart, 52, Arrested For 2 Counts of Burglary, 6 Counts Theft

0

The weather helped the Washington County Sheriff’s Department with an arrest of a Salem man on burglary and theft charges.

2512037b-d085-470e-9d51-bbb6caa10b89

According to Washington County Sheriff, deputies responded to a burglary in the Pekin area on Saturday.

“We were called back on Monday when we had a tip that a vehicle was stuck in the mud,” said Newlon, who contributed that to the Sunday night rain.

Randall L. Cozart, 52, 108 N. Fair Street, was brought in for for questioning.

According to Deputy Brent Miller, information was obtained to connect Cozart with burglaries at Western Auto in Salem, where 16 tires were reported stolen.

Police obtained a search warrant and recovered a treasure trove of items Cozart has allegedly stolen — more than 400 items.

“We think he was involved in a burglary at Tractor Supply,” said Newlon. “We found cases of garden seeds.”

Newlon also said power tools, chain saws, air compressors, lawn mowers and many other items were recovered from a trailer at the Fairview Trailer Park.

“He had been stockpiling things there,” said Newlon. “There was a shed there and there was even a door where you could go in under the trailer and that was full.”

In fact, Miller said he has between 400-500 pictures. “There is a good possibility most of this is stolen but we’re not sure where it’s stolen from.”

Newlon encouraged anybody in the area who has recently lost items in a theft to contact the Sheriff’s Department at 812.883.2834 and schedule a time to come in and identify their items with the photographs.

Newlon said authorities believe Cozart was breaking into the same house again on Monday when he became stuck.

Miller said Cozart will likely be charged with thefts in the City of Salem.

Traffic Stop for Speeding Lands Jasper Man in Jail for Driving after Using Methamphetamine

An early morning traffic stop resulted in the arrest of a Jasper man on OWI charges.

John Henry Kempf, 23, Jasper, IN was arrested and charged with Operating While Intoxicated, with passengers less than 18 years of age, Level 6 Felony.

At 2:43 A.M. this morning, Trooper Charlie Johnson was patrolling Main Street in Tell City when he observed a southbound 2001 Chrysler traveling 52 miles per hour in a 25 mile per hour zone.

Trooper Johnson also observed the vehicle travel across the center line numerous times. Upon conducting a traffic stop on the vehicle on Main Street near Mozart Street, Trooper Johnson learned that Kempf had just used methamphetamine.

Later tests indicated that Kempf had presumptively tested positive for methamphetamine and THC.

At the time of the traffic stop, Kempf had two children in the vehicle, a four and a five year old. The children were released to family members while Kempf was transported to and lodged in the Perry County Jail.
