Kimball Blvd. Moving — Slightly To The East

0

Kimball Blvd. is on the move – in this case it’s moving 20 feet to the East.

As most residents have noticed that the intersections with the entrances to the new Walmart and Settler’s Crossing retail area don’t line up with existing outlets.

Twinhouse Lane is a little to the West of Kimball Blvd and Pearl Street isn’t across from the East entrance to the Walmart store.

However, the stoplights were lined up on Pearl Street to match those across the road.

But those across from the Twinhouse stoplight structure would be directly across from property owned by Duke Energy.

The City of Salem and Walmart did not want to pay the high cost of the right of way for either the property to locate the stoplight on or to buy right of way use of an existing pole.

Indiana Department of Transportation Information Officer Harry Maginity explained Walmart took the cheaper option.

“We are relocating Kimball Blvd to the west about 20 feet, not widening it,” said Maginity. “The new signal will line up with the relocated Kimball Blvd.”

Forty feet of the first lot was taken from the first retail lot.

“The first 30 feet is within state right of way,” said Maginity. “Work is in conjunction with Wal-Mart and proximity of intersections.”

Maginity said Temple and Temple started placing the stone sub-base earlier this morning and, weather permitting,  He said paving could begin next week or the week after.

Traffic should not be effective by the relocation except for the occasional flagging operation.

Pair of 61-year-olds Arrested for Massage Parlor Prostitution

Today, a year-long investigation into a New Albany, Indiana Massage Parlor resulted in the arrest of two southern Indiana women on prostitution charges.

The investigation into the Evergreen Spa, located at 1222 State Street, New Albany, Indiana began in March 2015 when Indiana State Police Detectives received information that prostitution was taking place at the business.

During the course of the investigation by Detective Tim Denby, detectives went undercover into the business where they were allegedly offered sexual favors in exchange for extra payment.

At the conclusion of the investigation, the case was filed with the Floyd County Prosecutor’s Office which led to arrest warrants being issued for two employees of the business.

Today, Mimi Kim Grech, age 61, Clarksville, Indiana was arrested on two counts of prostitution and Yang Sun Hall, age 61, New Albany, Indiana was arrested on one count of prostitution.

New Construction Continues in Salem; Widening Kimball Blvd.

0

New construction continues to move forward in Salem — from the new Wal-Mart to a new facility for Duke Energy.

In two weeks, the Wal-Mart store has come together – literally. Cranes have lifted wall sections into place, enclosing the largest Wal-Mart Super Center in Kentuckiana.

Trucks were lined up at the site this morning with roof trusses.

Once the roof is installed, then the concrete floor can be poured and work can begin on the inside of the store.

In addition, construction continues on the Murphy USA gas station, with the concrete block building nearly complete. Workers began installing the gas tanks today.

Also on the site, workers have been preparing to widen Kimball Blvd.

According to INDOT officials, Kimball Blvd is being widened due to issues with Duke Energy right of way.

“There is a Duke easement on the west side of Kimball Drive that does not allow for alignment of Kimball Drive and Twin House Road,” said INDOT representative Harry Maginity.

“It also does not allow for a signal to be placed for Twin House road which serves 7 houses,” he noted. “Therefore the stop bar for Kimball Drive is in the middle of the approach for Twin House road.”

The Duke easement is for overhead power lines that cannot have a signal in proximity of it for Twin House, noted Maginity.

Also for the installation of Kimball signal, the road alignment has moved to the east to accommodate the strain poles by about 40 feet.

“Coral Street has the same issue as Twin House Road in alignment with the East end signal,” said Maginity.

“Please tell your employees to check the money they receive carefully,” said Major Scott Ratts. “The bills have been passed by two young white females driving a gray Chevrolet Cavalier with black rims.”

Ratts said the bills were passed at Family Dollar and Circle K.

“We have obtained video of the females and we will post the pictures of them tomorrow,” Ratts noted.

The bills were checked with a counterfeit detection pen and PASSED.

Ratts said the police department does not recommenced the use of these type of pens because of their unreliability.

BLOOMINGTON, Indiana – The Big Ten Conference has announced that Indiana University men’s basketball coach Tom Crean was named 2016 Big Ten Coach of the Year separately by the league’s coaches and media after he led the Hoosiers to their second outright Big Ten title in four years.  He is the first Hoosier coach to be honored by the league since Bob Knight claimed the honor in 1989.

The Hoosiers are 25-6 and are ranked No. 10 in the USA Today Coaches Poll and by the Associated Press.  IU won 15 (15-3) league games for the first time since 1992-93 when they won the conference with a 17-1 record.  The Hoosiers also have six wins against the RPI Top 50 and have posted the top winning percentage against top 25 competition among Big Ten schools this year, winning four of six games against nationally ranked teams.

The league title also was the 22nd overall for IU, tying Purdue for the most Big Ten Championships in league history.  It also was the 13th outright crown for the Cream and Crimson.

IU ranks third in the country in field goal percentage (50.2), fifth in 3-point field goal percentage (41.9), seventh in scoring margin (+13.9), ninth in 3-point field goals made per game (10.1) and 11th in scoring offense (82.7).

Completing his eighth year with the Hoosiers, IU will likely make its fourth trip to the NCAA Tournament in five seasons.  The Hoosiers advanced to the Sweet Sixteen in 2012 and 2013 and have been nationally ranked each of the last five years.

The outright Big Ten titles are the school’s first multiple outright championships in a four-year span since the 1980, ’81 and ’83 campaigns.  With his two outright titles, Crean only trails Tom Izzo and Thad Matta, who each have won three non-shared league championships, among current conference coaches.

In the last five seasons, IU is 118-51 (69.8).

Ferrell, Williams and Bryant Earn All-Big Ten Honors
Senior All-American guard Kevin “Yogi” Ferrell was named a unanimous first-team All-Big Ten selection.  He was fourth in the league in scoring (17.1) and assists (5.5), sixth in free throw percentage (82.1) and 10th in 3-point field goal percentage (42.1).  He is the Big Ten’s active senior class career leader in scoring (1,909), assists (607) and 3-point field goals made (262).  Ferrell also was selected to the league’s All-Defensive team.  This is the fourth straight year he has been recognized by the league, having been an honorable mention selection as a freshman, a second-team all-league performer as a sophomore and a first-team All-Big Ten pick as a junior.

Junior Troy Williams was named third-team All-Big Ten by the coaches and the media.  He averaged 13.0 points and 6.0 rebounds and shot 52.7 from the field.  He also posted career-high’s with 26 blocked shots, 35 steals and 20 3-point field goals made.  He was an honorable mention All-Big Ten choice a year ago.

Freshman Thomas Bryant was named third-team All-Big Ten by the league’s coaches and earned honorable mention status from the media.  He averaged 11.5 points and 5.8 rebounds and led the Big Ten by shooting 69.8% from the field.  He also led the team with 28 blocked shots.  He was one of two unanimous selections to the Big Ten All-Freshman team selected by the league’s coaches.

Bielfeldt Named Sixth Man of the Year
Graduate transfer Max Bielfeldt was selected by the league’s coaches as the Big Ten Sixth Man of the Year.  He came to IU this past summer after attending Michigan for four years and this season he has posted career-high’s in scoring (8.0), rebounds (4.5), field goal percentage (51.6) and 3-point field goal percentage (43.6).  He is the second Hoosier ever to win the award, joining Will Sheehey, who was recognized in 2013 for his play off the bench.

Burton Wins Sportsmanship Award
Senior Ryan Burton is Indiana’s recipient of the league’s Sportsmanship Award.  Sportsmanship Award winners have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior and must be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.  Burton played two seasons with the Hoosiers and was a member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches Honor Court this past year.

IRS Alerts Payroll and HR Professionals to Phishing Scheme Involving W-2s

0

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today issued an alert to payroll and human resources professionals to beware of an emerging phishing email scheme that purports to be from company executives and requests personal information on employees.

The IRS has learned this scheme — part of the surge in phishing emails seen this year — already has claimed several victims as payroll and human resources offices mistakenly email payroll data including Forms W-2 that contain Social Security numbers and other personally identifiable information to cyber criminals posing as company executives.

irs-phone-scam

“This is a new twist on an old scheme using the cover of the tax season and W-2 filings to try tricking people into sharing personal data. Now the criminals are focusing their schemes on company payroll departments,” said IRS Commissioner John Koskinen. “If your CEO appears to be emailing you for a list of company employees, check it out before you respond. Everyone has a responsibility to remain diligent about confirming the identity of people requesting personal information about employees.”

IRS Criminal Investigation already is reviewing several cases in which people have been tricked into sharing SSNs with what turned out to be cybercriminals. Criminals using personal information stolen elsewhere seek to monetize data, including by filing fraudulent tax returns for refunds.

This phishing variation is known as a “spoofing” email. It will contain, for example, the actual name of the company chief executive officer. In this variation, the “CEO” sends an email to a company payroll office employee and requests a list of employees and information including SSNs.

The following are some of the details contained in the e-mails:

  • Kindly send me the individual 2015 W-2 (PDF) and earnings summary of all W-2 of our company staff for a quick review.
  • Can you send me the updated list of employees with full details (Name, Social Security Number, Date of Birth, Home Address, Salary).
  • I want you to send me the list of W-2 copy of employees wage and tax statement for 2015, I need them in PDF file type, you can send it as an attachment. Kindly prepare the lists and email them to me asap.

The IRS recently renewed a wider consumer alert for e-mail schemes after seeing an approximate 400 percent surge in phishing and malware incidents so far this tax season and other reports of scams targeting others in a wider tax community.

The emails are designed to trick taxpayers into thinking these are official communications from the IRS or others in the tax industry, including tax software companies. The phishing schemes can ask taxpayers about a wide range of topics. E-mails can seek information related to refunds, filing status, confirming personal information, ordering transcripts and verifying PIN information.

The IRS, state tax agencies and tax industry are engaged in a public awareness campaign — Taxes. Security. Together. — to encourage everyone to do more to protect personal, financial and tax data. See IRS.gov/taxessecuritytogether or Publication 4524 for additional steps you can take to protect yourself.
