Drug Activity in Scott County Disrupted, Four Arrested

0

Over the weekend, several drug arrests were made by Scott County Sheriff’s Deputies.

During the late shift on Friday, February 12, 2016, deputies received information that activity, consistent with drug activity, was taking place at 150 Blunt Avenue in Austin, IN.

Deputies along with officers from the Austin Police Department responded to that address and made contact with the occupants of the residence.

While speaking with the occupants, it was learned that there was a camper also being occupied on the property.

Deputies responded to the camper and made contact with a LarryM. Burnett, age 43, and a Christine N. Smith, age 29.

While speaking with the pair, deputies located a hypodermicsyringe lying on a shelf inside of the camper.

Deputies investigated further and located more hypodermic syringes, marijuana, paraphernalia associated with intravenousdrug use, and heroin, inside of the camper.

Chief Deputy Don Campbell, who was out during the late shift assisting deputies, described that one of the syringes was “loaded” for use.

Burnett and Smith were both arrested charged with possession of a narcotic drug, possession of marijuana, possession of paraphernalia, and for visiting a common nuisance.

On Sunday, February, 14, 2016, a Scott County Sheriff’s Deputy conducted a traffic stop on a 1994 Tan Buick near Marshfield Road and Slab Road.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as John B. Watts, age 35.

It was discovered that Watts had a warrant out for his arrest through Scott County for strangulation. Watts was asked to step out of the vehicle and initially refused the deputy’s command.

Watts then stepped out and began resisting by pulling away from the deputy and then fled on foot. Watts was subdued by an ECW (electronic control weapon) and subsequently taken in to custody.

The vehicle was occupied by a passenger identified as Renea C. Clark, age 32. Inside of the vehicle, deputies located two handguns, ammunition, paraphernalia associated with drug use and drug dealing, and approximately 10 grams of suspected methamphetamine.

Watts and Clark were both placed under arrest by Scott County Sheriff’s Deputies. Watts is being charged with resisting law enforcement, possession of methamphetamine, possession of a handgun without a permit, and possession of paraphernalia.

Clark is being charged with possession of methamphetamine, possession of a handgun without a permit, and possession ofparaphernalia.

All subjects arrested are presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of law.

Chief Campbell explains that the Sheriff’s Office has received an overwhelming submission of tips from the public.

Chief Campbell encourages the citizens of Scott County tocontinue their efforts in reporting criminal activity and explainsthat a great number of recent drug arrests are adirect result of deputies investigating the tips received.

Report any suspicious activity, including drug activity, to the Scott County Sheriff’s Office.

The Sheriff’s Office maintains several options for reporting criminal activity anonymously, including the department’s website, Facebookpage, and a tip line, 1.812.752.7898.

WSLM LAUNCHES NASCAR WEEK WITH COVERAGE OF SPEEDWEEKS 2016

0

WSLM and Motor Racing Network is poised to kick off its 47th year of motor sports coverage this weekend from Daytona International Speedway as NASCAR begins a new season.

Saturday night’s Sprint Unlimited was the first of 71 races MRN – “The Voice of NASCAR” – will deliver to WSLM and through live streaming at wslmradio.com.

Motor Racing Network’s schedule from “The World Center of Racing” will encompass 10 days of action culminating with the 58th running of the Daytona 500 on Sunday, Feb. 21 with the broadcast beginning at Noon on WSLM 97.9 FM.

“I”m proud to bring another year of NASCAR action to the racing fans around the WSLM listening area,” said Becky White, owner. “WSLM has always been known for racing action, being one of the first stations to bring open-wheel racing to the airwaves back in the 50s and 60s with local tracks and broadcasts from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.”

White said WSLM broadcasts all NASCAR Sprint Cup, Xfinity and Truck races via MRN and PRN as well as the Brickyard 400 via the Indy Radio Network, making it the only station in the Kentuckiana area to include all these races.

“Some stations carry a portion of the races, but WSLM has the entire schedule, which makes it nice for our listeners to listen to the entire season,” said White.

This year’s programming from Speedweeks will honor the memory of long-time MRNannouncer Barney Hall, who passed away last month at the age of 83.  Each race broadcast will include a moment of silence at Lap 45 to commemorate Hall’s 45 years of service with the network.

Eli Gold, host of MRN’s pre-race show, will remember Hall in an essay that will air before Saturday night’s Sprint Unlimited.  Barney also will be featured in Motor Racing Network’s pre-race coverage of the 58th Daytona 500.

“We’re all still grieving over the passing of Barney Hall and we miss him dearly,” said MRNPresident and Executive Producer David Hyatt.  “Speedweeks will feel a little empty this year.  But in many ways, I’m certain Barney will be with us for every lap.  I applaud Programming Director Ryan Horn and his team for assembling the elements that will help us all remember once again just how special Barney was – not only to MRN but to NASCAR.”

Live coverage of Saturday’s Sprint Unlimited will start at 7 p.m. (EST).  MRN’s Speedweeks programming will include live coverage of Daytona 500 Qualifying Presented by Kroger on Sunday afternoon, when the front row will be set for the season-opening Sprint Cup Series race.

On Monday night, there’ll be a one-hour special titled “DAYTONA Rising: The Future Is Now,” chronicling the $400 million frontstretch redevelopment of Daytona International Speedway.

Tuesday night, Gold will host a special airing of “NASCAR Live” from Outback Steakhouse in Daytona Beach, Fla., with NASCAR President Mike Helton the featured guest.

The cornerstone of the network’s Speedweeks coverage from Daytona will be a stretch of five race broadcasts in four days beginning with the Can-Am Duel twin qualifying races for the Daytona 500 on Thursday, Feb. 18, in primetime.

Coverage of the Feb. 19 NextEra Energy Resources 250 in the Camping World Truck Series will begin at 7 p.m.  Tyler Reddick is the defending race winner, Erik Jones the reigning series champion.  The following day, MRN will broadcast the PowerShares QQQ 300 XFINITY Series opener at 3 p.m.  Ryan Reed won last year’s race while Chris Buescher, his Roush Fenway Racing teammate, was crowned series champion in 2015.

Speedweeks concludes with coverage of “The Great American Race,” the season-opening Daytona 500, on Sunday, Feb. 21.  Joey Logano is the defending race winner.  Kyle Busch will open his bid for a second consecutive Sprint Cup Series championship.

From 27 tracks in North America, MRN will deliver live coverage of 71 races spread across NASCAR’s three top national series: Sprint Cup, XFINITY and Camping World Trucks.

Veteran announcers Joe Moore and Jeff Striegle will anchor the majority of events, which will include the Sprint All-Star Race from Charlotte Motor Speedway in May and the season-ending Ford Championship Weekend from Homestead-Miami Speedway in November.

In addition to its award-winning race coverage, MRN will broadcast all Sprint Cup Series practice sessions from the 12 International Speedway Corporation-owned tracks, Dover International Speedway, Pocono Raceway and Charlotte Motor Speedway during All-Star Weekend in May.

Motor Racing Network’s 2016 broadcast schedule will once again conclude with live coverage of the Sprint Cup Series Awards from Las Vegas on Friday, Dec. 2, with live streaming at MRN.com and on the MRN App.

State Police Respond To Over 350 Cases Due To Snow

0

Crashes, Slide Offs, Assist Motorists and Road Closures

Sunday’s winter storm that started around 12 noon Sunday and on through 8 p.m. affected a large portion of the state.  During this time frame the Indiana State Police responded to:

  • 68 Personal Injury Crashes
  • 199 Property Damage Crashes
  • 102 Assist Motorist Calls

According to Washington County Sheriff Roger Newlon, officers had responded to 3-4 slide-offs locally. No injuries were reported.

Fortunately, thus far, the Indiana State Police has not taken any fatality crash reports related to today’s winter storm from 12 noon to 8 p.m.

All motorists are reminded of these important winter weather driving safety tips:

  • Reevaluate the necessity of a trip during a winter storm
  • If you MUST travel, leave early, reduce speed, have a fully charged cell phone as well as a winter emergency travel kit
  • Remember that 4×4 or All Wheel Drive (AWD) vehicles may allow a driver to drive faster in snow and ice, but these vehicles DO NOT STOP ANY FASTER than a 2 wheel drive vehicle
  • Reduce speed and increase following distance
  • Wear Seatbelts
  • If involved in a property damage crash, the participants should, if possible, move their vehicles off the road to a safe place and exchange information.

According to INDOT, the following counties in the WSLM LISTENING AREA are under an advisory driving condition because of the snow and ice – Monroe, Brown, Bartholomew, Martin, Lawrence, Orange, Dubois, Crawford, Washington, Floyd, Jennings, Clark and Jefferson.

Scott County is under a WATCH category, which means that conditions are threatening to the safety of the public. During a “watch” local travel advisory, only essential travel, such as to and from work or in emergency situations, is recommended, and emergency action plans should be implemented by businesses, schools, government agencies, and other organizations.

700 Yellow Trucks Continue to Plow, Treat State Highways

0

Temps to rise; Freezing rain chances for morning commute

Local Indiana Department of Transportation maintenance supervisors monitored weather forecasts and deployed yellow trucks ahead of today’s snowstorm. As of 3 p.m. Eastern time, about 700 trucks continue to plow and treat state highways.

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through midnight for western and southern Indiana south of a line from Lafayette to Cincinnati, Ohio.

Each INDOT plow route takes 2-3 hours to complete with salt assisting in melting between passes. Trained truck drivers alternate shifts of 12 hours or more to ensure around-the-clock coverage.

Temperatures impact roads

Right now pavement temperatures remain well below freezing, requiring road salt to work harder to melt snow and ice. Granular salt helps to add traction while lowering the temperature at which the ice melts.

Air temperatures are predicted to rise ahead of the Monday morning commute, increasing the chances for freezing rain in southern and central Indiana. Drivers should not be over-confident with pavement that appears to be bare as there may be a clear coating of freezing rain or “black ice”. Even four-wheel-drive vehicles and large trucks are no match if all tires are on ice.

INDOT maintenance supervisors will closely monitor the boundary between rain, sleet, ice and snow and adjust their deployment of manpower, equipment and materials as appropriate.
