Ferrell To Return For Senior Year at IU

0

All-Big Ten guard Kevin “Yogi” Ferrell has announced that he will return for his senior year at Indiana University.

“Like several other student-athletes in the game of basketball, I have considered the option of leaving college early to join the professional ranks,” said Ferrell. “I have considered many factors, including my family, my education, the game I love, and my goals in life. I would like to thank my family and friends, Coach Crean and his staff, my academic advisor, Marni Mooney, and my teammates for their contributions to my decision-making process.”11037037

“At the end of the day, I have decided that it is in my best interests to continue my education, to build on my involvement in the community, and to improve my skills as a basketball player as a member of the 2015-16 IU Men’s Basketball Team,” Ferrell noted.

“Anyone who actually knows me knows that I am a fierce competitor,” the senior-to-be added. “I truly want to leave a legacy of accomplishments at IU, like the great IU legends of the past. I look forward to returning to IU to complete my undergraduate degree and to begin my graduate studies. And I plan to lead my returning teammates and our incoming players to our goal of achieving great things next year in Assembly Hall.”

A first-team NABC and USBWA All-District selection, Kevin Yogi Ferrell was sixth in the Big Ten averaging 16.3 points and was fourth in assists at 4.9. He also has made a three-pointer in 65 consecutive games, the longest active streak in the nation.

“We will always support Yogi in his career and life paths, and returning to Indiana affords him an opportunity to leave an indelible mark in the proud history of the Hoosier program,” said IU Coach Tom Crean. “More importantly, he will earn an IU degree to carry with him the rest of his life. His continued growth and development on the court will provide him longevity at the next level and a bright future.”

Ferrell, 6-0, and a native of Indianapolis, ranks 22nd on the school’s all-time scoring list with 1,379 points, sixth in career assists at 438 and fourth in three-point field goals with 193. All three of those totals will make him the Big Ten’s active leader in those categories entering his final season.

Coming off an NCAA Tournament bid last season, the Hoosiers have been a consensus top 15 team in most 2015-16 preseason polls.

Police have arrested Daniel E. Messell, 49, of Bloomington. He is being held on a preliminary charge of murder.

Wilson  was a senior at Indiana University and a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority.

The investigation has been in joint cooperation with the Bloomington Police Department who had taken a Missing Persons report regarding Miss Wilson earlier Friday afternoon.

The Monroe County Prosecutor’s Office along with the Brown County Prosecutor and the Brown County Coroner are also involved in the investigation that continues at this time.

The Indiana State Police stresses the filing of criminal charges is only the beginning of the process and Mr. Messell is presumed innocent until and unless guilt is proven in court.

“The entire IU Bloomington community mourns the tragic death of Hannah Wilson,” IU Communications Director Mark Land said in an email. “Our deepest sympathies go out to Hannah’s family and friends during this unspeakably sad time.”

The news hit the IU community hard, revisiting memories of Lauren Spierer, a student who disappeared in 2011, and Jill Behrman, a student who disappeared more than a decade ago.

Behrman’s body was recovered years after her disappearance. John Myers, a local man, was convicted of her murder. Spierer’s disappearance remains unexplained.

Menards to Back Two Venturini Entries for Jones and Kimmel at Talladega

0

The 2015 ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards season has been unique for the Venturini Motorsports (VMS) team.

After several seasons of fielding at least one full-time driver for the series championship, the team focused its efforts on fielding its flagship No. 25 Ansell-Menards car in a split season for 10-time ARCA Racing Series champion Frank Kimmel and Richard Childress Racing Development Driver, Brandon Jones.

Both drivers were originally scheduled to split the 20-race ARCA schedule with 10 races each with Talladega reserved for Jones.

“Over the years, Frank has been one of our biggest rivals,” team co-owner Billy Venturini said. “We’ve raced him hard for race wins and championships, so it was a pleasant surprise when we were able to put this deal together at the beginning of the season. But we knew the way the deal was, we’d only have Frank for ten races. At Talladega, we have two young drivers in Brandon Jones and Cody Coughlin, and neither of them have a lot of drafting experience. We really pride ourselves in helping drivers develop the skills they need to go win races in an XFINITY or Cup car, which is why we worked so hard on this deal to get Frank on track at Talladega. It will be great to have his leadership to help our two young drivers in the draft, and he’ll have a great chance to get his third win at Talladega. Huge thanks to Menards, Richmond Water Heaters and 101 Ranch Records for jumping on board and making this happen.”

“I really want to thank Billy and all the sponsors for putting this deal together and giving me another race in one of the Venturini cars,” Kimmel said. “As a team, Venturini Motorsports had really fast cars at Daytona. Cody ran really strong, and although Brandon wasn’t in that race, Daniel Suarez was and we all had a shot to win. I think Brandon and Cody are both great young men and I can’t wait to get out there and work with them.

“Sometimes when you have a multi-car team you work extra hard to beat your teammates at the expense of beating everyone else. We’re going to make sure we don’t do that. We want to work together and get up front and then we’ll settle it among ourselves on the last lap.”

Menards is happy to extend its relationship with the Tide brand, a partnership that has seen the familiar orange and blue colors on many of the Eau Claire, Wis.-based retailer’s racecars over the years.

“Menards is excited to see both Frank Kimmel and Brandon Jones on the same track competing under the Menards name at Talladega. We appreciate the opportunity to partner with Tide, Brandon Jones and Venturini Motorsports for the Talladega ARCA race.” said Jeff Abbott, Menards spokesman. “We have a longstanding relationship with Tide and are excited that they are involved with us at this great event.”

The No. 25 Ansell-Menards Toyota has finished among the top five in all three ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards events in 2015.

Kimmel started the season with a fifth-place run at Daytona while Jones scored a runner-up finish at Mobile and followed it with a fourth-place run in the series’ most recent event at Nashville. Jones will look to continue his top-five streak in this weekend’s Federated Auto Parts 200 at Salem Speedway.

The International Motorsports Hall of Fame 200 is slated for 6 P.M. Eastern on Friday May 1. The race is will be broadcast on WSLM 97.9 FM, the Louisville area NASCAR station.
