Only 12 percent of Hoosiers Turned Out For Indiana Municipal Primaries

0

Secretary of State Connie Lawson today announced that 12 percent or 327,477 of the 2,661,239 Hoosiers who were eligible to vote in the May 5 municipal primary election cast a ballot. Not all Hoosier voters were eligible to vote in the May 5 municipal elections. Only voters who live in a city or town with an election this year or in a school corporation conducting a construction or tax levy referendum were eligible to vote.50aba0c34c8f9.preview-300

The complete 2015 Municipal Primary Election Turnout and Absentee Chart with voter statistics for each county can be viewed online at http://www.in.gov/sos/elections/primary15/2015MunicipalPrimaryTurnout.pdf. The report was compiled by the Election Division of the Secretary of State’s office from voter data gathered in 72 of Indiana’s 92 counties. There were 20 counties in Indiana this year that did not have a primary election.

“Congratulations to Starke County as they had the highest turnout in the state with 33 percent,” said Secretary Lawson. “I hope to see more counties have a higher turnout rate this fall. To encourage this, my office will conduct an unprecedented municipal election voter outreach campaign to remind Hoosiers to register to vote and to vote this fall.”

This primary saw an increase in the use of cost-saving vote centers. Bartholomew, Clinton and Huntington Counties used voter centers for the first time in this election. As a state senator, Secretary Lawson authored legislation giving counties the option to establish vote centers, which has the potential to significantly improve efficiency and reduce county election costs. Vote centers consolidate multiple precincts into a single location, enabling counties to save on costs associated with hiring poll workers and purchasing voting machines and supplies.

“In 2013, during the off election year, I held informational meetings for county election officials to educate them on the benefits of vote centers,” said Secretary Lawson. “The savings to taxpayers and the increased flexibility for voters are significant and I hope that counties who feel this is the best choice for their citizens will choose to follow suit.”

INDOT To Chip Seal SR 337 & SR 135 This Week

0

Indiana Department of Transportation maintenance personnel plan to chip seal nearly ten miles of State Road 337 south of Corydon and over six miles of S.R. 135 north of New Salisbury this week.  Flaggers will be on site to direct motorists around moving worksites.

Weather permitting, INDOT Seymour District crews will be begin placing chip seal materials Monday morning (JUNE 1) on S.R. 337’s northbound lane at its intersection with S.R. 11 south of Dogwood.  Work will proceed to Corydon’s south corporate limits.  On Tuesday(JUNE 2), crews hope to chip seal S.R. 337’s southbound lane between Corydon and S.R. 11.

The schedule calls for chip sealing S.R. 135 from S.R. 64 at New Salisbury north to Voyles Road on Wednesday (JUNE 3).  Chip seal materials will be placed on the southbound lane of S.R. 135 the following day—unless there are weather delays.

INDOT officials advise motorists to drive very slowly and with extreme caution on highways that have been freshly chip sealed to avoid vehicular damage from asphalt spray or loose aggregate.

Both routes will be overcoated with fog seals after chip seal applications have cured.

Chip seals/fog seals are extremely cost-effective.  Experience shows that every $1 spent on this kind of surface treatment today saves $6 to $14 in highway expenditures later.
Chip seal applications coat the highway with liquid asphalt—sealing pavement cracks and protecting the roadbed from harmful ultraviolet rays.  This extends service life and lowers overall maintenance costs.  Small chips of limestone are used to cover the asphalt—choking it from spraying vehicles or sticking to tires.  The aggregate chips also restore surface friction for improved skid resistance and driver safety.

Fog seals are fine coatings of liquid asphalt sprayed over the chip sealed surface.  The fog seal dampens dust from limestone fines, assists in aggregate retention and adds another waterproof layer of asphalt sealer to further protect the highway.

Two Vehicle Crash Sends Two To Hospital; One Arrested

0

A two car crash this afternoon about 30 minutes after the Salem High School graduation sends two former SHS students to the hospital and landed the driver of the second vehicle in jail.

th

According to Indiana State Trooper Travis Baker, Kristen E Potter, 19, was driving a Black 2014 VW Jetta on State Road 135 South. Her passenger was Sidney Burger, 19.

Potter stopped in the road to signal a left turn and was waiting to make the turn, said Baker.

At that time, the car was rear ended by a 1997 Green Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Michael A Abell, 32.

Baker said Abell was arrested for driving while suspended with a prior conviction, a Level 6 Felony.

Baker said the Jeep flipped over and was leaking gas on SR 135.

Initially a helicopter ambulance was called in from Louisville because Burger reported no feeling in her legs and feet.

Baker said all passengers were wearing seatbelts.

“The helicopter landed but was not needed,” said Baker. “Burger reported she had began getting feeling back in her legs and feet. The two were taken by ambulance to Floyd Memorial Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.”

Abell refused medical treatment and was taken from the scene. “It was amazing he didn’t have any bruises,” said Baker. “He said he wasn’t paying attention and looked up and saw them.”
