Edna Pearl d’ Entremont

Edna Pearl d’ Entremont passed away at her home on Tuesday, May 5, 2015.

Edna was born in Oldham County, Kentucky to the late Eagle and Hilda Grimsley. She was also preceded in death by her husband Leon d’ Entremont Sr.

Edna is survived by sons, Leon d’ Entremont Jr. and Jesse James, brothers Darly and Jr. Grimsley, sisters Wanda Capps, Kathy Duncan and Judy Harper. Edna is also survived by one step daughter Ernestine Covert, four grandchildren, and two step grandchildren.

Edna was a CNA Nurse and will be sadly missed by family and friends.

There were no services. Cremation was chosen.

Love Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Leontina A. Marino, age 90

Leontina A. Marino, age 90 of Pekin, passed away Tuesday, May 5, 2015 at 6:15 pm, in the Floyd County Memorial Hospital. Born April 22, 1925 in Niagra Falls, New York, she was the daughter of the late Carmine and Anna (Palmisano) Luciani.

She was a former Snack Shop Manager and Pet shop Owner in Newfane, New York, was a member of St. Patricks Catholic Church and had been a resident of Washington County since 1974 formerly of Newfane, New York.

She was a member of the Pekin Senior Citizens Club, served as a Polk Township Inspector and wrote for the Salem Leader & Democrat from 1983 to 2001.

She married April 20, 1949 to Michael Marino, who passed away July 12, 1993.

Survivors include: 2 Daughters: Elizabeth Sites, Chapman, Kansas and Nancy Shambach, Lockport, New York; Stepdaughter: Rose Marie Shelton, Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada; 2 Sons: Michael G. and John Marino, Pekin; 3 Sisters: Rose Mary Merriman, Charlestown, Angeline Phillips, Niagra Falls, New York and Joan Mudd, Pleasure Ridge Park, Kentucky; 12 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by 1 granddaughter, 1 step daughter, 1 brother and 1 sister.
Funeral Service: 11:00 am Saturday at Dawalt Funeral Home with Father Louis Manna officiating.

Visitation: 4 to 8 pm Fridayand after 9 am Saturday.

Interment at Olive Branch Cemetery.

City Council Races Send Terkhorn and Crane to Fall Election

The City of Salem Primary Election this evening sent the only two contested races for Republican and Democratic nominations for City Council  into the fall election.

District 4 Incumbent Wally Terkhorn winning the Democrat Nomination over Mark Hobson,  125 to 87 — add in another 3 absentee votes for Hobson and one for Terkhorn and the total is 126-90.

Steven Crane won the Republican nomination for City Council District 3 — defeating John Fultz and Bob Lemmons.

Crane took 61 total votes while Fultz earned 38 and Lemmons received 22.

IN OTHER ELECTION NEWS

  • Dan Libka received 63 votes and the unchallenged Republican nomination for City Council  District One. He will face John Smedley who earned 88 votes in the uncontested Democratic nomination for City Council District One.

 

  • The Republicans didn’t field a candidate for the City Council District 2 spot.  Incumbent Warren “Truck” Jones received 88 votes for the uncontested Democratic nomination to run this fall.

 

  • Jim Snelling received 74 votes in the unchallenged Republican nomination for City Council District 3 position. He will face Leslie Leis, who received 163 votes (3 early votes) and will be the Democratic challenger this fall.

 

  • Justin Green received 324 votes and the unchallenged Republican nomination for City Council – Member at Large. He will face Johnny Sullivan, who received 393 total votes (4 early votes) for the uncontested Democratic nomination to run for City Council – Member at Large.

 

Stewart Wins Clerk Treasurer Nomination By 119 Votes

Former Washington County Treasurer Kevin Stewart will be running this fall for the City of Salem Clerk Treasurer after the Democrat party chose him to be their candidate, ousting incumbent Patricia Day Persinger, by 119 votes.

Persinger, who has held the position in Salem under the past two Democratic mayors (Judy Chastain and current Mayor David Bower) received 281 votes. Four of those votes were early votes.

She received 41.26 percent of the vote.

Stewart received 398 votes at the polls and 2 early votes. Stewart received 58.74 percent of the vote.

Merry Will Face Haendiges in Fall Salem Mayor Race

Voters turned out in force today for the City of Salem primary election and voted for change.

In the Mayor’s race, former Mayor Judy Chastain was defeated by 25 votes by Salem Police Chief Troy Merry. He will be the Democrat candidate in this November’s election.

Chastain, who was defeated two terms ago by current Mayor David Bower, received 317 votes. Merry received 342.  Chastain received two absentee votes while Merry received 4 absentee votes.

The total votes were Merry 346 to 319.

State Farm Insurance Agent Ron Haendiges defeated Washington County Assessor Jason Cockerill for the Republican nomination. for Mayor candidate.

Haendiges received almost twice as many votes — 240 to Cockerill’s 125. There were no absentee votes for either of these candidates.

Delano V. Mann, 82

Delano V Mann, age 82, entered into rest on May 5, 2015, at Hosparus Inpatient Care Center in Louisville, Ky.

He is survived by his son, Danny Mann and his partner, Lou Franklin, and 5 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

He was in the United States Army. He was preceded in death by his mother Cordia Mann, father Ralph Mann, sons Jerry Mann and Robert Mann, and brothers Burnice & Bodine Mann.

Funeral will be at Love Funeral Home in Palmyra, Indiana at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 8, 2015. Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 7, 2015 and from 11:0 a.m. until the time of service on Friday.
