Other finalistsinclude Donna Gribbins of Shelbyville, with the Stuffed Green Chili Burger and Brandon Fullen of Louisville, with his Bourbon BBQ Bonanza;

Allgeier’s winning Derby Burger recipe will be featured as the Local Legendary Burger at Hard Rock Café Louisville in May, recognized in Louisville-area and Lexington-area Kroger stores and samples will be featured at the Kentucky Derby Festival’s BeerFest presented by American Founders Bank.

Allgeier receives VIP tickets to Thunder Over Louisville, tickets to Waterfront Jam and BeerFest at Kroger’s Fest-a-Ville, as well as a $100 gift certificate to Kroger and a grilling package from Kentucky Beef Council.

From now through April 17, all purchasers of fresh ground beef at any of the Kentuckiana Kroger stores (including Lexington locations) will receive a code at checkout (on the bottom of the receipt).  The message encourages you to register online at www.kdf.org/beef for a chance to win VIP tickets to a Waterfront Jam Concert presented by the John R. Elliott HERO Campaign at Kroger’s Fest-a-Ville or BeerFest presented by American Founders Bank.

Since 1956, the Derby Festival has worked to bring the community together in celebration. The Festival is an independent community organization supported by 4,000 volunteers, 375 businesses and civic groups, Pegasus Pin sponsorships and event participation. This involvement has made the Festival the largest single attended event in Kentucky and one of the leading community celebrations in the world.

One of two signees for the Boilermaker men, Cline will shoot on his home court as he’s starred for the Greyhounds for the past four seasons. The 2015 Indiana Mr. Basketball candidate has been named a four-star recruit by ESPN.com, and earned MVP honors of the Adidas Super 64 tournament, leading Indiana Elite to the team title. He helped Carmel to the 2013 Indiana 4A State Championship as a sophomore and shot 43 percent from long distance and earned a spot on the Indy Star Indiana Junior All-Star Team in 2014. In his final high school season, Cline averaged 21 points per game and led his team all the way to the regional finals.

Murphy is one of five members of one of the top-ranked signing classes in Purdue women’s basketball history, earning five-star rankings from several recruiting services, including the No. 30 spot in ESPN Hoop Gurlz Top-100. Competing for South Bend Washington High School, Murphy scored over 1,500 points in her career, including 18.6 points per game this season. Knocking down 36 triples on the year, Murphy also averaged 6.4 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 5.3 steals per game. City Offering Grants to Rehab Senior Homes

0

Administrative Resources association along with the City of Salem are seeking public interest in grant money to rehab homes of seniors in the City of Salem limits.

Up to $15,000 would be awarded to applications who are 55 and older, living in a single-family, owner-occupied home.

Aging_in_Place

There are several requirements and the city hasn’t received funding at this point, said Salem Mayor David Bower.

“If funding is awarded to Salem, we will be able to rehab between 18-20 homes,” he said at a recent meeting with Deb Lilly, manager of municipal programs from ARa.

Bower said the city would be holding several meetings to gauge interest, the first of which was March 17.

“This program is good for our seniors,” said Lilly. “It allows them to age in place.”

She said the grant would be for $350,000 maximum and the city would contribute about 10 percent.

Lillly and ARa are currently working on similar grants in New Castle, Seymour, Rushville, Elizabethtown, Lawrenceburg and Columbus.

Lilly said the grant applications would be due in July and awarded in September.

A bidder’s list would be provided and awards made so work could start over the winter months or early spring 2016.

“This is a great opportunity for those who are over 55 and need repairs to their home,” said Bower. “This has paid for renovation of bathroom to make them handicap accessible and has moved kitchen cabinets to a lower level. The possibilities are endless.”

Residents who are interested must meet the criteria to be elligible:

  • 55 or older
  • Single-family, owner-occupied home
  • Home must be on permanent foundation – most mobile homes are not elligible.
  • Contract sales are not eligible.
  • Homes must be insured.
  • Homes must be in need of modifications (based on referral and/or home assessment)

Total household income must be at or below the following income guidelines

  • One person in household – $27,050
  • Two people in household – $30,900
  • Three people in household – $34,750
  • Four people in household – $38,600
  • Five people in household – $41,700

Applications are available at the Mayor’s office and at any future public meetings to be held.

Indiana University men’s basketball coach Tom Crean has announced that sophomore guard Stanford Robinson has requested a release from his athletic scholarship to transfer to an institution closer to his home where he can earn more playing time. He will continue to have use of the team’s facilities and academic support during his remaining time at IU.

“I respect Stan’s desire to contribute more on the court and understand that the opportunity to play closer to your family is something he would like to have happen,” said IU Coach Tom Crean. “I think he has grown a great deal and matured in the two years he has been a part of the program and I hope he takes his experiences at Indiana University to remind him of what he can accomplish not only as a basketball player, but as a human being.”

Robinson, a 6-4 guard from Landover, Maryland, played two seasons at IU and averaged 4.7 points in his career. He saw his playing time go from 16.9 minutes per game as a freshman to 11.4 per game this past season.

“I am grateful to Coach Crean, the assistant coaches and staff and my teammates for helping me become a better man,” said Robinson. “I hope to find something that is closer to family and where I can have more of an impact on the court. I’ve loved everything about being at IU and am thankful for the support of Hoosier Nation.”

Gov. Pence To Meet With Scott County Official

0

Gov. Mike Pence is to visit Scott County and meet with local officials about an HIV outbreak that Pence’s office says “has reached epidemic proportions.”

Pence is scheduled to travel with state health commissioner Dr. Jerome Adams and state epidemiologist Pam Pontones to Scottsburg for this afternoon’s meeting.

The governor will issue a public health disaster emergency Thursday for Scott County, but the scope of that order will be determined by what he hears from local officials today.

State health officials said Friday that 55 HIV cases have been confirmed in southern Indiana. Scott County is the epicenter of that epidemic.

Federal health officials will begin working in the area this week. At the same time, a local doctor is pushing for a change in state law he believes could help contain the spread.

The CDC is stepping in to help. Disease Intervention Specialists and what’s called an “Epi-Aid” team are expected to start this week.

Most of those infected shared needles while injecting a powerful prescription painkiller, but some of the HIV cases have been linked to unprotected sex.
