Free admission to state parks and reservoirs this Sunday

0

The last weekend in September is a great time to visit an Indiana state park or reservoir, with National Public Lands Day activities on Saturday, and free admission on Sunday.

National Public Lands Day is the nation’s largest single-day volunteer effort for public lands.

Volunteer opportunities at Indiana state park and reservoir properties on Saturday include collecting wild prairie seeds for re-sowing on DNR properties, construction projects, gardening and trail cleanup.

But National Public Lands Day isn’t all work and no play. Properties will also be offering hikes, pioneer activities, crafts and live bird shows. National Public Lands Day activities for Indiana state parks and reservoirs are posted at StateParks.IN.gov/2443.htm.

National Public Lands Day is also a great time to support your local Indiana state park or reservoir by joining its friends group. Friends groups support DNR properties by helping with events, working on trails, and fundraising.

Many friends groups will hold events or membership drives on Saturday.

Links to each State Park & Reservoir friends group are at StateParks.IN.gov/2442.htm.

Volunteer opportunities and fun activities will continue at many properties on Sunday, when admission to state parks and reservoirs is free.

For property-specific information on volunteer opportunities, fall programs and special event weekends, see InterpretiveServices.IN.gov or call the specific property you plan to visit.

At approximately 3:02 this afternoon, Brandon W. Chamberlain, 23, Huntingburg, was traveling northbound on State Road 162 in a white 2012 Ford F-350 SuperCrew pick-up truck.

For an unknown reason, Chamberlain traveled left of center, striking a southbound tan 2001 Buick Century, driven by Donna Marie Evans, 60, Cannelton. The impact pushed Evans’s vehicle backwards and off of the east side of the roadway.

As Chamberlain’s Ford continued north, Chamberlain could not maintain control of the vehicle. Due to the violent dynamics of the crash, an ATV in the bed of Chamberlain’s truck became airborne and bounced through the windshield and roofline of a red 2013 Mazda CX-5 SUV, driven by Donna R. Trafton, 58, Ferdinand. Impact by the ATV shattered the windshield and peeled the roof back off of the vehicle before coming dislodged and landing in a driveway on the west side of the roadway. Trafton’s SUV came to rest on a hillside, also on the west side of the roadway.

After losing the ATV and sideswiping Trafton’s vehicle, Chamberlain’s Ford rolled onto the driver’s side and slid northbound in the northbound lane. The vehicle came to rest without rolling over any additional times. Chamberlain was extricated from the vehicle by first responders and was flown to St. Mary’s Hospital in Evansville for treatment of a broken tibia.

Evans was transported to Memorial Hospital in Jasper, where she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead by the Dubois County Coroner. Trafton was also taken to Memorial Hospital and is in stable condition after suffering two fractured vertebrae.

State Road 162 was closed for nearly three and a half hours while investigators processed the scene.

This crash remains under investigation.

Investigating Officer was Sergeant Philip Hensley. He was assisted by Dubois County Sheriff’s and Ferdinand Police Departments, Ferdinand and St. Anthony Fire Departments, Memorial Hospital EMS, Dubois County Coroner’s Office

Authorities in Jennings County, Indiana say a gun dealer was shot and killed during a robbery of his business west of North Vernon, likely on Sunday.

Officers found the body of Scott Maxie, 61, on the floor of his business, Muscatatuck Outdoors, along County Road 200 South Sunday night. An autopsy showed Maxie died of a single gunshot wound to the head and he had been killed inside his store, according to a Jennings County Sheriff’s Dept. statement released late Monday.

Sheriff’s officers, state troopers and federal ATF agents also determined 47 guns had been stolen from the business, the statement said. ATF said in a separate statement that the guns include handguns and long guns.

Investigators checked out tips in Indianapolis and closer to Jennings County throughout the day Monday. Officers remained on the scene until 7:30 p.m. Monday, the statement said.

ATF and the National Shooting Sports Foundation offer a reward of up to $10,000 for information in the case.

Anyone with tips is asked to call the Jennings County Sheriff’s Dept., 812-346-8642; Indiana State Police, 812-689-5000; or the ATF Field Office, 317-287-3500.
