Boilermakers Cruise Past California (Pa.) In Exhibition Opener, 89-52
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – A.J. Hammons scored 15 points to lead four players in double figures and the Purdue men’s basketball team shot 54.0 percent from the floor to soundly defeat California (Pa.), 89-52, in Sunday’s exhibition opener.
Purdue has now won 24 straight exhibition games and is 19-0 under head coach Matt Painter in exhibition contests.
The Boilermakers staked California (Pa.) an early 5-0 lead, but then embarked on a 35-4 run over 10-plus minutes to grab a 35-9 advantage with 7:34 to play. After starting just 2-of-6 from the field, Purdue made its next eight shots and would finish the first half 21-of-34 (.618) from the field en route to a 50-22 halftime lead.
After the Vulcans scored the opening basket of the second half, the Boilermakers then went on a 9-0 run to grab a 59-24 lead with 17:26 to play. The lead would stay above 30 the rest of the game and the Boilermakers would take their largest lead of the game at 85-43 with 3:51 to play.
Purdue finished the game shooting 34-of-63 (.540) from the field, 7-of-20 (.350) from three-point range and just 14-of-26 (.538) from the free throw line. Purdue outrebounded the Vulcans, 49-37, and had 22 assists (on 34 field goals) against just 10 turnovers.
California (Pa.) shot 19-of-66 (.288) from the field, 7-of-28 (.250) from three-point range and 7-of-11 (.636) from the free throw line. The Vulcans were guilty of 16 turnovers, 12 of which were Purdue steals, which helped the Boilermakers to an 18-0 advantage in fast-break points.
Hammons had an efficient game, scoring 15 points with five rebounds and five blocked shots in just 17 minutes. Rapheal Davis scored 11 points with three rebounds in 14 minutes, while Bryson Scott had 10 points, four assists, and three steals. Isaac Haas was the last player in double figures with 10 points, four rebounds and two blocks in 18 minutes. P.J. Thompson led Purdue in assists with five.
Haas and Hammons combined for 25 points, nine rebounds and seven blocked shots in 35 minutes, while going 12-of-14 from the field.
Khalil Jabbie and Drew Cook led California (Pa.) with 10 points each.

Stolen property found thanks to Facebook
Two from Bedford have been arrested in connection with a string of break-ins after they were found to be selling stolen items on Facebook.
Arrested and Charged were Michael Norman, 25, 198 Art Gallery Road, Bedford, IN. He was charged with Possession of Stolen Property, Level 6 Felony. Also arrested was Kasie New, 25, 1514 F Street, Bedford, IN. She was charged with Possession of Stolen Property, Level 6 Felony.
The Orleans Police Department had been investigating a string of car break-ins in the area, when yesterday, a victim contacted Officer Alex Fugate to inform him that a number of their stolen items were listed on a Facebook page named “Bedford Better Online Yardsale”.
Officer Fugate contacted State Police Detective David Henderson to ask for his assistance with the case.
Detective Henderson reached out to the seller of the stolen items to arrange a meet, staging the purchase of the items. This afternoon around 1:15 P.M., Detective Henderson met with Michael Norman, 25, Bedford, in the parking lot of Burger King in Bedford. Norman had one of the stolen items and attempted to sell it to Detective Henderson. After checking and verifying that the item was in fact stolen, Norman was placed into custody.
Officers later arrived at 1514 F Street, Bedford, the home of Kasie New, 25, Bedford. New was the person responsible for setting up the sale of the stolen items on Facebook. After speaking with New, officers recovered, in total, 25 stolen items.
Norman and New were both lodged, without incident, in the Lawrence County Jail.
Detective Henderson was assisted by the Bedford and Lawrence County Police Departments.
Police Arrest Two in Canton shooting
Two from Washington County were arrested Saturday evening after a shooting near Canton that also involved drugs.
Washington County Sheriff’s Deputy Brad Naugle responded to a call at 5:40p to Morgan’s Market where a female subject had discharged a handgun at another vehicle.
Jeanne LaChappelle was arrested and charged with pointing a firearm and criminal recklessness with a weapon as well as carrying a handgun without a license.
Kevin W. Wynn was arrested for possession of a syringe and possession of drug paraphernalia.
During the investigation, which was aided by Deputy Joe Keltner, Reserve Deputies Sam Franck and Andrew Mull, officers learned that LaChappelle was driving east on State Road 56 and shot at the vehicle driven by Wynn at least one time. Wynn was not injured.
The 911 call from Morgan’s Market said LaChapelle was pointing a gun at Wynn in the parking lot.
The investigation is continuing.
Washington County gets share of DNR Forestry Revenue
Washington County will receive the fifth largest amount of annual timber sale revenue, among the 17 counties in the DNR Division of Forestry program, sharing $330,000 with 16 other counties.
The Division of Forestry allocates 15 percent of timber sale revenue from state forests to counties in which harvests occur. Each county receiving funds shares half with rural and volunteer fire departments that maintain a cooperative agreement with the DNR’s Fire Control Headquarters.
This year, 136 rural and volunteer fire departments will benefit. Fire departments are encouraged to use the funds to improve their wildland firefighting capability.
The 17 counties and their share of the total $333,540.20 being distributed are:

IU Basketball players involved in accident
Early Saturday morning, an accident occurred on the Indiana University campus involving two of the school’s basketball players, the fifth alcohol-related incident involving IU basketball players this year.
Based on preliminary information, sophomore Devin Davis was injured after being struck by a vehicle driven by teammate freshman Emmitt Holt, just moments after exiting that vehicle.
Davis was taken to IU Health Bloomington Hospital and is currently in serious condition. Holt was cited for illegal consumption and operating a vehicle with a BAC above 0.02. Holt had a BAC of 0.025.
“First and foremost, our thoughts are with Devin and his family and we pray that his condition improves in the coming days,” said IU Coach Tom Crean. “An injury to one of us is an injury to all of us and we are devastated by the news. We will continue to support Devin and Emmitt in every possible way and I know the Hoosier family will come together to rally for these young men. We are working to gather additional information on the accident.”
Davis is a 6-foot-7 forward from Indianapolis. Holt is a 6-foot-7 forward from Webster, New York.
In September, junior guard Yogi Ferrell and sophomore guard Stanford Robinson entered pretrial diversion programs after being charged in April with consumption of an alcoholic beverage by a minor and possession of false identification. And junior forward Hanner Mosquera-Perea was arrested in Bloomington in February on preliminary drunk driving charges.
Indiana opens the season Nov. 6 in an exhibition on Nov. 6 against Northwood University in Bloomington.
