Fort Wayne Regional Laboratory Manager Named to National Forensic Committee

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) yesterday named nearly 70 new members to the Organization of Scientific Area Committees (OSAC), the NIST-administered body that is seeking to strengthen forensic science through the identification and development of standards and guidelines.

The latest round of appointments is for the OSAC’s five scientific area committees. These committees provide the critical bridge between the Forensic Science Standards Board and the 23 discipline-specific subcommittees which will lay the groundwork for establishing new forensic science standards and guidelines.

One of those new appointees is John R. Vanderkolk, a 34 year veteran of the Indiana State Police who currently serves as the Fort Wayne Regional Laboratory Manager. “I thank the current and past commanders and personnel of the Indiana State Police and our Laboratory Division for supporting me throughout my career and encouraging me to participate in this NIST project as we strive to help forensic comparative science become better. I am also excited that my research colleague, Thomas Busey, Ph.D., Associate Chair of the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at Indiana University, has also been named as a member of this committee” said Vanderkolk who was appointed to the Physics/Pattern Scientific Area Committee along with 14 others from around the nation. The Physics/Pattern Committee encompasses the forensic science disciplines of bloodstain pattern analysis, friction ridge, firearms/tool marks, footwear, tire tread and questioned documents.

“The new appointees represent leading forensic science experts and researchers from crime laboratories and academic institutions,” said John Paul Jones II, associate director for OSAC affairs. “We’re grateful that they are willing to participate in the OSAC.”

The Scientific Area Committees will manage the work performed by the OSAC subcommittees and play a key coordination role when standards and guidelines span multiple forensic science disciplines. Scientific Area Committee meetings will provide an open venue for OSAC subcommittees’ work products to be shared with the public for feedback. The Scientific Area Committees have the authority to approve OSAC guidelines for publication in the OSAC Registry of Approved Guidelines and approve standards to be presented to the Forensic Science Standards Board for approval and inclusion in the OSAC Registry of Approved Standards. Samtec, Inc. to Consolidate Operations with New Facility in Scottsburg

0

Samtec, Inc. today announced that the company will be consolidating operations by relocating two of their existing manufacturing facilities to Scottsburg, Ind. The global company plans to break ground on a 70,000-square-foot facility in September or October 2014.

Samtec, headquartered in New Albany, Ind., will open its new manufacturing facility by mid-year 2015 in Scottsburg’s Certified Technology Park District adjacent to the Mid-America Science Park (MASPark). The move will relocate approximately 300 new jobs to Scottsburg.

“The new facility will help us streamline operations in Southern Indiana and provide greater efficiencies in distribution and logistics,” said Keith Baumann, global facilities manager for Samtec. “Scottsburg has numerous economic amenities that align with our global growth initiatives as a service and quality leader.”

Samtec is a privately-held, $565 million global manufacturer of electronic interconnects. The company was founded in 1976 and employs approximately 4,000 people worldwide.

“The City of Scottsburg and MASPark look forward to building a strong partnership with Samtec,” said Mayor Bill Graham. “In addition, we are excited to welcome Samtec and the business culture they will bring with them into our community.”

“We continuously strive to stay ahead of the curve when it comes to economic and workforce development, and we are committed to providing Samtec with the support they need to succeed here,” said Robert Peacock, Executive Director, of theScott County Economic Development Corporation.

The company chose to locate next to the science park to leverage MASPark’s Industrial Training Center for Advanced Manufacturing and virtual capabilities through the Worldwide Communications & Conference Center.  Samtec’s new facility will be connected by a walkway to MASPark.  The property will be owned by a Grover Stacy Company and construction will be managed by Koetter Construction.

“Samtec will attract a new segment of entrepreneurs in the electronic interconnect industry,” said Joe Pearson, executive director of MASPark. “This is exactly what the community’s leadership set out to accomplish when they envisioned, planned and built a world-class science park in Scott County.”

Scottsburg’s Certified Technology Park District was designated in 2004 as part of Mayor Graham’s and the City of Scottsburg’s long-term vision for creating high-paying job opportunities in Scott County. The Samtec consolidation is the result of a collaborative effort by the Scottsburg City Council, the Scottsburg Redevelopment Commission, the Scott County Economic Development Corporation and the Mid-America Science Park.

An educational and training partnership between Scott County School Districts 1 and 2, Ivy Tech Community College, and MASPark’s training center will help ensure that Samtec has access to a skilled workforce. The new facility is also expected to attract entrepreneurs and new businesses to Scott County.
