Accident sends two to Evansville hospital

0

A head-on crash just outside of Hatfield sent both drivers to an Evansville hospital in critical condition.

Master Trooper Randy Neighbors reports that at approximately 7:30 A.M., Colton W. Claspell, 19, Newburgh, was traveling eastbound on State Road 66, just east of Hatfield.

Both were airlifted to St. Mary’s hospital.

After passing County Road 800 West, for reasons unknown at this time, Claspell drove his tan 2001 Chevrolet Blazer across the westbound lane, struck two mailboxes, and drove along a corn field before driving head-on into a silver 2012 Dodge Caravan, driven by William M. Boehman, 66, Maceo, KY.

Impact from the crash pushed Boehman’s Dodge into a driveway on the south side of the roadway and caused Claspell’s Chevrolet to come to rest on its driver’s side.

Claspell and Boehman were both airlifted from the scene and taken to St. Mary’s Hospital in Evansville with critical injuries. Both vehicles were total losses.

This crash remains under investigation. The Indiana State Police was assisted at the scene by the Spencer County Sheriff’s Department, Luce Township Fire Department, Spencer County EMS, and St. Mary’s Hospital.

The world’s largest travel site – TripAdvisor.com – has announced the nation’s top water parks, and Holiday World’s Splashin’ Safari is on that list.

Holiday-World-Splashin-Safari

The 40-acre water park, among the largest in the world, was named the #4 park in the nation and #13 in the world, following only Disney and SeaWorld parks in the U.S. rankings.

Votes for the TripAdvisor award came from the park’s visitors.

Splashin’ Safari is home to the world’s two longest water coasters, Mammoth and Wildebeest, plus dozens of other water attractions, slides, and wave pools.

2nd Blitz along I-65 this weekend; between Seymour and Scottsburg

A second non-stop construction blitz will occur this weekend on Interstate 65 from Seymour to Scottsburg. Indiana Department of Transportation officials anticipate significant traffic back-ups, especially Friday and Sunday afternoons and evenings.

Motorists are urged to alter travel plans if possible to avoid traffic queues that could exceed four miles in length.

The normal work week for INDOT’s $54.7 million I-65 pavement project between U.S. Highway 50 and State Road 56 ends at 1 p.m. on Fridays and begins again at 6 p.m. on Sundays. This weekend’s continuous construction–along with an accelerated weekend schedule last month–will shorten the timeline for completing this project by six to eight weeks.

Lane closures through Saturday include:
• I-65 southbound left lane at mile marker 48.0
• Southbound right lane at mile marker 38.0
• Northbound left lane at mile marker 29.0 (reopens Friday)
• Northbound left lane at mile marker 44.0
• Nightly ramp closures for patching

Lane closures for the week beginning Sunday July 20:
• Northbound right lane at mile marker 29.0
• Northbound right lane at mile marker 39.0
• Northbound ramp at S.R. 56
• Northbound ramp at S.R. 256

John R. Jurgensen Company is the state’s prime contractor for renovating 21 lane miles of pavement and rehabilitating 20 bridges in Scott and Jackson County. Operations include full-depth concrete patching followed by milling and paving. The functional overlay is being placed in two lifts using a premium Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA) material for the surface course.

Further north, I-65 motorists may experience traffic delays this weekend at Columbus where a $1,439,736 concrete pavement restoration project will close the northbound left lane between mile markers 67.0 and 70.0 and the southbound on-ramp from S.R. 46.

Restrictions begin at 7 p.m. Friday. They will be lifted at noon on Monday. A 45 mph speed limit will be enforced through the 1.6-mile construction zone when workers are present. There is an 11-foot width restriction through the zone for northbound traffic.
