The 2014 IU Southeast commencement ceremony was canceled on Monday due to severe weather.

Only minutes after  graduates and staff took their seats, IUS officials were notified by the IUS police department that lightning was approaching.

The ceremony was suspended and attendees were instructed to take shelter in Knobview Hall or Meadow Lodge. Almost an hour later it was announced that the commencement was canceled.

Students were asked to turn in their rental robes and told if they kept them for a future commencement, they would be charged $600.

Interim Chancellor Barbara Bichelmeyer said that the university is disappointed that the graduates were not able to participate in the ceremony, but that the safety of all in attendance forced the cancellation.

One student posted on his Facebook page – “I couldn’t be more disappointed in IU Southeast. I’ve put in my time and my work to graduate, and have the opportunity to hear my name called across the loudspeaker and walk across the stage. What happened today was chaos and a lack of leadership. The IU Southeast Administration dropped the ball and the Class of 2014 suffers the consequences.”

“There was a significant amount of lightning in the area,” Bichelmeyer said. “It is a huge risk management issue for us, so we had to make that call.” Bichelmeyer said that university officials are in the process of finding a way to hold separate commencement ceremonies for each school to make up for Monday’s cancellation.

She said students should  expect to be notified by email or IUS Notify of any future plans.

“We know you (students) have been working on this for years and years,” Bichelmeyer said. “We want to find a way to do justice, and recognize, with all the pomp and circumstance you all  deserve.”

Trooper Jarrod Lents went to Bailey Brothers Used Cars, in the 500 block of 2nd Street, after employees discovered that the sales office had been broken into. Sometime between closing on Friday and Saturday morning someone broke into the officer area and took three sets of keys. Of the three cars the keys belonged to, a 1994 Jeep Cherokee was not moved, a 1995 Jeep Cherokee was moved across the street and across from the service center, and a 2009 BMW 335i was stolen from the property.

After entering the BMW as stolen in the computer database, investigators learned that the vehicle had been recovered at about 6:30 Saturday morning by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. The vehicle had been abandoned in a ditch.

Indiana State Police Crime Scene Investigators spent the rest of the weekend processing the vehicles and business for clues and information; however, investigators are asking for your assistance. Anyone with information regarding this case is asked to contact the Jasper Post of the Indiana State Police by calling (812)-482-1441.

Jackson County Deputy released after being shot

An officer wounded in a shootout with an 18-year-old prison parolee barred from possessing a firearm has been released from the hospital.

Rick Meyer, a Jackson County sheriff’s deputy, planned to return to the scene of the incident Friday to talk with investigators about his role.

Meyer was shot twice — once in each shoulder — while investigating a report of suspicious people on State Road 39 just south of Tampico. That report was received at 7:06 p.m. Thursday, and the caller told dispatch there were what appeared to be suspicious juveniles walking along the highway with a trash bag and a gasoline can.

Isiah Rogers, 18, of Brownstown, who is accused of shooting Meyer was on parole after serving less than one year in prison on a sexual assault conviction and was barred from possessing a firearm.

Roger who was shot by return fire from Officer Meyer, has been out of prison for less than three months, according to public records.

A second man involved in the incident Thursday, 21-year-old Alexandrew L. Mullikin, of Vernon, was wanted on a Jennings Circuit Court warrant on charges of auto theft and false informing, according to the Jennings County Prosecutor’s Office. He was arrested on that warrant and remained in the Jackson County Jail on Friday night.

A review panel of five people will investigate the shooting. Sheriff Michael Carothers says the review board will include officers with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, a firearms instructor from another police agency and the county prosecutor. He is unsure when the panel will meet to review the incident.

Irsay is back in the office

Jim Irsay is back. The Colts owner has been out of the public eye since his arrest seven weeks ago for driving while impaired.

The team announced two days later he’d voluntarily checked himself into a treatment facility.

Irsay’s freewheeling Twitter account had been dormant since his arrest except for a single retweet. He broke his silence with a trio of tweets late Thursday night from the team’s war room for the NFL draft.

Irsay thanked Colts fans for their “love and support,” and tweeted, “Really missed you guys! Your kindness will never be forgotten!”

The Colts didn’t have a first-round pick, but will swing into action with Friday’s second round.

Irsay’s reemergence comes a day after the Indiana Sports Corporation announced Irsay will make Indy’s presentation at the NFL owners’ meeting May 19-21 as the city makes its pitch for the 2018 Super Bowl.

Police say Irsay was driving extremely slowly and sometimes stopping in the middle of the roadway when he was pulled over in Carmel. Officers say they found various prescription drugs in the vehicle.

Hamilton County prosecutors say they’re still waiting on blood test results before deciding whether to file formal charges.
