Houchin gets GOP nod to run against Young in November

Republican Candidate Erin Houchin defeated Harrison County attorney Tad Whitis in Tuesday’s primary election, 5,608 to 4,174; giving her the nod to run against incumbent Richard Young for the District 47 Indiana State Senate seat in November.

Houchin was a legislative assistant to Senator Dan Coats and is married to Washington County Prosecuting Attorney Dustin Houchin.

In Crawford County, Houchin edged Whitis, 539 to 386.

In Dubois County, Houchin defeated Whitis, 347 to 144.

Whitis defeated Houchin in his home county (Harrison) with 1,934 total votes to 802.

Houchin won in the remaining two counties in the district — Perry (261 to 124) and Washington (1453 to 557).

Houchin will face Young in the General Election this November.

Young entered the State Senate in 1988 when he was appointed to complete the unexpired term of then-Senator Frank O’Bannon. Young was elected to a full-term in 1990 and has been re-elected to six consecutive terms in the Senate. Young served as the Senate’s Democratic Leader for twelve years from 1996 to 2008. In 2008 he was appointed to serve as Democratic Leader Emeritus.

The Primary Election – By The Percentages

Despite the beautiful weather and warm temperatures, the voter turnout in Washington County was rather low.

Which isn’t surprising for a spring primary.

But there were several hotly contested races — including the Democratic and Republican nomination for county sheriff and one commissioner district in the Republican Primary.

As far as the Democratic nomination for sheriff, City of Salem Sheriff David Bower received only 35 percent of the vote — or 836 total votes. In fact, Bower only carried Salem 1 and Salem 2 precincts.

His opponent, Chief Deputy Sheriff Roger Newlon received 65 percent of the vote – or 1,535 votes. Newlon carried 19 of the 21 precincts in Washington County.

In the Republican ballot, Roy Overshiner won the  Sheriff nomination with 44 percent of the total vote with 855 total. Danny Libka received 33 percent of the vote with 638 ballots cast. John Revels won 23 percent of the vote with 439 votes.

Overshiner will face Newlon in the November election.

In the other contested major race for District 2 Commissioner, Preston Shell won with 33 percent of the vote, narrowly defeating Mark Boling, who had 28 percent; or 642 to 537. Incumbent John Fultz took 23 percent or 443 votes. Phil McIntyre received 16 percent or 316 votes.

Shell will face Democratic candidate Tom Day in the fall. Day ran unopposed on the Democratic ticket.

The unofficial results were tabulated about 8:45p tonight for the Washington County Primary Election and WSLM was first to deliver news of the winning categories live on 97.9 FM and 1220 AM.
Chief Deputy Sheriff Roger Newlon defeated Salem Mayor David Bower by almost half — 1535 votes to 836 — for the Democratic nomination for Sheriff.

Bower won only two of 21 precincts — taking only Salem 1 and 2.
Newlon won Salem 3 and 4 and all four Washington Township precincts and all of the rest of Washington County townships.
Newlon will face former City of Salem Police Officer Roy Overshiner in the fall election. Overshiner defeated two others for the Republican nod. Overshiner received 855 votes, Danny Libka received 638 and John Revels, garnered 439.
In the Republican race for nomination to run for the District 2 Commissioner seat, Preston Shell will be facing an unknown Democratic challenger this fall.
Shell gathered 642 votes, topping Mark Boling who picked up 537 votes. Incumbent John Fultz took 443 votes and Phil McIntyre had 316 total votes.

Update: Three arrested in high-speed chase, ends in Salem.

Three people were arrested Monday afternoon after a two county high speed chase – including a meth manufacturer and dealer the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office has been hunting for months.

The Harrison County Sheriff’s Department  held a live press conference which was broadcast on WSLM 1220 AM and 97.9 FM regarding the arrest of three this afternoon after a high speed chase through Harrison and Washington Counties.

Back in February the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office said deputies started chasing a car with Ian Goebel inside. The pursuit lasted nearly an hour and went through three counties.

It ended with a deputy being run over in Orange County and Goebel and the car’s driver shot by law enforcement.

Goebel was sent to University of Louisville Hospital. The Harrison County Sheriff’s Office said despite a request to be notified, the hospital did not call law enforcement when Goebel was released, citing a new policy.

Since then Goebel has been sought by multiple agencies, but deputies said his luck ran out on Monday.

The Harrison County Sheriff’s office was tipped off that Goebel was the passenger in a gold Oldsmobile around 11 a.m. in Corydon. When deputies tried to stop the car, the driver took off.

For 15 minutes the car led deputies on a high speed chase on windy, narrow roads.

Deputies thought the car was slowing down due to mechanical issues, but then another dramatic turn.

Harrison County Chief Deputy Wayne Kessinger said a black Nissan Altima with a woman behind the wheel not only passed several cop cars, but the Oldsmobile as well. Kessinger said at some point Goebel jumped into that car and they took off.

Deputies believe Goebel ended up getting into the driver’s seat and the chase continued for another 30 minutes at times reaching speeds of 100 mph.

The chase finally came to an end when a Washington county deputy’s car was able to spin out the Altima bring it to a stop.

It all ended in Washington County on Orchard Road between Highway 135 and Becks Mill Road near Salem.

“I’ve been doing this for 45 years and that’s the first time I’ve ever had someone pass the pursuing vehicle and the pursuit vehicle and then stop and pick up the person and leave,” That’s the first time I’ve ever seen or heard of that in my entire career,” said Kessinger.

Three arrests were made including the driver of the Oldsmobile, Steven Matlock. Police said Kayla Sizemore, 24, was initially behind the wheel of the black Nissan and Ian Goebel, 30.

Matlock and Sizemore face charges of assisting a criminal and resisting law enforcement. Goebel faces multiple drug charges including manufacturing and dealing as well as resisting law enforcement.
