Former SHS basketball player arrested for child seduction in Frankfort

0

A 1985 Salem High School graduate, former Salem Lions basketball player and head boys basketball coach that took his Frankfort team to a State Championship in 2009 has been arrested for child seduction.

Police arrested Thomas Weeks, 46, after a tip from someone close to Weeks on Monday which revealed an inappropriate relationship between the teacher and a 17-year-old female student. He was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon after a police investigation.

Weeks is a history teacher at Frankfort Senior High School, where he also coaches the boys’ basketball team.

“These types of allegations are taken very seriously and investigated with the utmost sensitivity. Cooperation between the Community School of Frankfort and our detectives, as well as information gathered during the investigation, led to Week’s arrest,” Frankfort Police Chief Troy Bacon said.

Weeks is being held at the Clinton County Jail. He faces a single felony charge of child seduction.

Investigators say Weeks did not force himself on the girl. Detectives recovered text messages between the two that are considered evidence in the case.

“In regards to the relationship and how many times, we’re not divulging that at this point, but we are looking at the other factors to make sure and to rule out that there was no one else involved with Mr. Weeks,” Bacon said.

Child seduction charges are used when the suspect is in a position of authority and trust.

“We don’t believe that. Again, we’re still investigating a lot of factors in the case, but we don’t believe that’s the case. We don’t believe that it was a forced encounter,” Bacon said. “Since it is a juvenile case and a sexual case, we’re treating it very sensitive, so a lot of the information, we’re not able to release.

Weeks has been with Frankfort Community Schools since 2012. He left a job in Princeton, Indiana where in 2009 he led the basketball team to a state championship.

Weeks will likely have an initial hearing later this week. If convicted, he could face prison time.

Southbound traffic was being detoured off I-65 southbound to U.S. 31. On U.S. 31 a southbound semi was stopped in traffic just north of County Road 50 North. A 2008 Toyota Corolla driven by 58-year-old Thomas Coomer, of Austin was on CR 50N waiting to turn left and go north on U.S. 31. As southbound traffic was stopped the semi driver motioned for Coomer to pull out. Coomer pulled out in front of the semi and continued into the northbound lane of U.S. 31 and was struck broadside by a northbound 2005 Chevrolet Uplander van driven by 60-year-old Timothy Brock, of Seymour.

Coomer’s wife, 55-year-old Debra Coomer, the front seat passenger in the Toyota, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Thomas Coomer and Brock both suffered minor injuries and were transported to Schneck Medical Center in Seymour to be treated.

Military Families Invited to Participate in Annual Blue Star Salute

0

Military families from across Indiana are invited to participate in the Annual Indiana Blue Star Salute on Saturday, June 21 from 10-2 at the Hendricks County Fairgrounds in Danville.  This event honors the sacrifices made by family members of those serving on Active Duty and in the Reserve and National Guard.  Admission and parking are free and the event is open to the public.

Indiana has a rich legacy of military service and honoring our veterans when they return.  Serving alongside our veterans are the parents, siblings, spouses and children of our military families.  For the past 8 years, the Indiana Blue Star Committee has been honoring these family members through a daylong salute that includes recognition of the family’s service member, guest speakers, prizes and a day of family fun.

Each family also receives a Blue Star Banner to commemorate the tradition started during World War I by Captain Robert Quiessner of the 5th Ohio Infantry to honor his sons serving in Europe.  Today, Blue Star Service Banners are displayed by military families across our country to show pride in their loved one’s service and to remind all Americans that preserving our freedom is not free.  With service members deployed all around the world, we are reminded that communities around our Indiana are filled with proud military families.

To participate in the Indiana Blue Star Salute, military families should register at indianabluestar.org.  More information is available on Facebook and Twitter at Indiana Blue Star Salute.
