Musketeers Girls Sectional 2A Champs

0

The Eastern Lady Musketeers won the Sectional 2A Title last night in Pekin with a 40-38 victory over the Paoli Lady Rams.

A win earlier in the day over Crawford County set the Musketeers up to play in their their consecutive match up with Paoli on Saturday night.

Although Eastern had made it into the sectional final for the past two years, the Rams ended up winning both years.

This year, third time was the charm.

Earlier this year, the Musketeers lost to Paoli on January 28, in a 38-42 rematch of last year’s sectional game.

“This has officially become a rivalry,” said WSLM Broadcaster Matt Hein last night during the broadcast.

The Musketeers are 12-9 on the season and McBride is 92-60 in 7th year at Eastern.

The Lady Musketeers will face North Knox in the first game of the Regional competition at Paoli High School on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 10:30a. Other teams in this regional are Milan, North Knox, Forest Park.

According to Eastern Head Coach Mike McBride, the tickets will go on sale Monday morning at 8a — while supplies last. Admission is $7 per session; $10 both sessions.

WSLM will be broadcasting the game on WSLM 97.9 FM beginning with a pre-game show at 10:15a. Broadcasters will be Matt Hein, Mark Maudlin and Kevin Sease.

WSLM 1220 AM to celebrate 61 years

0

The Weather Bird — and WSLM 1220 AM – turn 61 on Friday.

That’s right – on Valentine’s Day.

Becky White, station owner and general manager, is quick to point out two things. First, it’s the station that’s turning 61. And second, all the kudos for WSLM begin and end with her late father.

She recalls the stories her father retold with pride and passion over the years.

377599_10151495960722112_298247599_n

“Dad wanted to get the station going on Christmas Day 1952,” she aid. “He had things ready and someone broke in that night and demolished a lot of the station and stole the rest.”

But as Don Martin showed over the years, he was a master at promotion and a spin doctor extraordinaire.

The Christmas Eve theft was enough to get the Associated Press’s attention and Martin told them he had equipment most preferred by thieves and that was enough for the AP to send the story around the nation.

“Dad was a master of turning lemons into lemonade,” White said of her best friend and business partner of more than 20 years who passed away in August 2011. “They found the equipment and re-installed everything and had the station ready to go by Valentine’s Day 1953. The Associated Press carried the story again. This time they dubbed WSLM as the Sweatheart Station of the Nation.”

And indeed, the station has been a sweatheart to Martin and now to White.

As the 1220 AM station gets a facelift — not only in the studio but on the airwaves too (it now plays Classic Country music on its own – apart from sister station WSLM 97.9 FM) — it is the new home of Purdue Sports in the Kentuckiana area and home of the Cincinnati Reds.

“WSLM 1220 AM is the largest AM station in Southern Indiana,” said White. “We reach from the south edge of Indianapolis to Frankfurt, Kentucky and from the edge of Illinois to Cincinnati. The station is back on its own and playing classic country music, which is the format it started off with in 1953. I think Dad would be very proud.”

After Martin’s 98.9 FM station, White started WSLM 97.9 FM in 1992. She’s also busy transitioning her TV station — WHAN 17 to the digital age this year. It will become HD 40 and will be an over-the-air channel as well as on all the Time Warner Cable systems in the area.

Although the old studio is outfitted with the latest in digital radio equipment, modern microphones and custom wooden furniture — signs of Martin’s 58 year reign are apparent — the thousands of 45 rpm records, 78s and LP albums are still archived in the studio. “I can’t take them out,” said White. “They remind me of Dad and this is the studio he worked in from the day he started the station until the night before he passed away. It’s updated but still has memories of him.”

WSLM will be giving away prizes from local merchants — including hotel stays, diamond jewelry and dinners all day on WSLM radio and through the station’s website – wslmradio.com.

BNL Assistant Football Coach Killed in Wreck

0

39-year-old Michael R. Brown was killed Monday morning in a two-vehicle accident on Ind. 37 and 29th Street.

Brown was an assistant football coach at Bedford North Lawrence High School.

Coaches and administrators met with team members this morning and counselors have been made available at the school for students and adults who want to consult them.

Brown was killed after his 2005 Nissan Xterra crashed into the rear of a semi-tractor trailer just before 7 a.m.

According to Bedford Police Chief Dennis Parsley, Brown was traveling south on Ind. 37 and was approaching the stop light at 29th Street when the light had just turned green.

“The semi had just started through the light when Brown’s vehicle hit the rear of the coal hopper, just a few yards south of the stop light,” Parsley says. “Mr. Brown was taken to IU Health Hospital where he was pronounced dead in the emergency room.”

The semi driver, 46-year-old David Jones of Sanborn, complained of neck pain. Jones was driving for Elmer Buchta Trucking in Otwell.

Parsley says Ind. 37 was blocked for about an hour this morning while officers worked the accident. Traffic was detoured around that accident from Ind. 37 to 16th Street.

“We want to thank all of the Lawrence County officers that assisted with traffic control,” Parsley added.

Bedford Fire Department extrication unit assisted at the scene.

ISP finds 2 pounds of pot in Jackson County man’s car

Indiana State police arrested a Blufton man after they stopped him for a traffic violation in Jackson County Sunday afternoon.

According to ISP Trooper Randel Miller, he stopped a 2008 Mercury passenger vehicle driven by 27-year-old Jamie Husband on I-65.

Pot-Bust

During a conversation with Husband, the officer became suspicious and had his K-9 Jink walk around the car.

The dog alerted Miller of possible drugs in trunk. When police opened the trunk they found two pounds of high-grade marijuana.

Husband was arrested without incident and is facing felony charges of dealing and possession of marijuana.

Troopers says this case is yet another example of how a traffic stop for traffic violations can lead to more serious criminal activity.

Charges filed against those in three-county chase

Charges have been filed against the three occupants of a vehicle that led a police officer on a three-county pursuit early Monday morning. The pursuit ended with shots fired on a dead-end road in Valeene in Orange County.

Harrison County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Michael Andry and two of the three people in the vehicle were injured. Andry suffered leg and back injuries after being hit by the suspect’s vehicle and thrown onto the hood of his police car. He was treated and released from Harrion County Hospital.

23-year-old Daniel Holloway, of Marengo, and 30-year-old Ian T. Goebel, of Depauw, were injured after Deputy Andry fired three shots into the vehicle after the driver refused to get out of the vehicle and then drove the vehicle toward the officer.

Both men were taken to University of Louisville Hospital for treatment. Holloway suffered two gun shots to his hands and Goebel suffered a gunshot wound to his stomach.

Orange County Prosecutor Kelly Minton filed the charges Monday afternoon, against Holloway and Goebel and a third passenger 25-year-old Rachel Kirkham, of Corydon, who was in the back seat of the vehicle. She was not injured and was taken to the Orange County Jail after the pursuit ended.

Minton reported that additional evidence was gathered after a search warrant was executed for the vehicle involved in the accident.

Holloway was charged with the following and a warrant was issued for his arrest:

  • Count 1, attempted murder, a class A felony
  • Count 2, dealing in methamphetamine, a class B felony,
  • Count 3, maintaining a common nuisance, a class D felony,
  • Count 4, possession of chemical reagents or precursors with intent to manufacture a controlled substance, a class D felony,
  • Count 5, resisting law enforcement, a class D felony,
  • Count 6, criminal recklessness, a class A misdemeanor, and
  • Count 7, habitual substance offender notice.

Goebel and Kirkham were each charged with the following and a warrant was issued for his arrest:

  • Count 1, dealing in methamphetamine, a class A felony,
  • Count 2, possession of chemical reagents or precursors with intent to manufacture a controlled substance, a class D felony, and
  • Count 3, visiting a common nuisance, a class B misdemeanor.

Harrison Deputy released after injuries in early morning shoot out

0

A Harrison County Sheriff’s Deputy sustained injuries to his leg and back this morning during a shootout after a high-speed chase through three Indiana counties.

Harrison County Deputy Michael Andry gave chase to a suspicious vehicle early this morning and after the car turned on him, shot two of the three passengers in the car before he was struck by the car, sending him to the Harrison County Hospital.

5403

The driver of the Honda Civic was identified as Daniel Ray Holloway, 23, Leavenworth, IN.  Holloway was shot in the abdomen and was transported to University of Louisville Hospital in Louisville.  The front seat passenger, Ian T. Goebel, 30, Depaul, IN, was shot twice in the hands.  He was also transported to University of Louisville Hospital.  Rachel S. Kirkham, 25, Corydon, IN, was seated in the back seat of the Honda and was not injured.

At approximately 1:59 A.M. Andry observed a black Honda Civic on US 150 at State Road 135 in Palmyra.   After observing the vehicle take off from the intersection at what appeared to be a high rate of speed, Deputy Andry followed behind the Honda and checked the license plate through the BMV.  The plate returned as a false or fictitious registration, not matching correctly with the Honda.  Deputy Andry activated his emergency lights, at which point the Honda attempted to evade.

The pursuit continued west on US 150 through Washington County and into Orange County.  Near the Rego area, the suspect vehicle turned south onto county roads, eventually turning south onto Valeene Road.  At County Road 820 South, the suspect vehicle turned west onto a dead end.  The suspect vehicle stopped and turned around, facing towards Deputy Andry.  Deputy Andry exited his vehicle and ordered the vehicle to stop at gunpoint.  The suspect vehicle proceeded to drive directly at Deputy Andry. Deputy Andry fired three rounds into the windshield of the suspect vehicle, striking two suspects.  The suspect vehicle continued towards Deputy Andry, striking him and throwing him onto the hood of his patrol car.  The suspect vehicle then struck the patrol car, driving down the passenger side of the car.  An Indiana Conservation Officer, who had backed up Deputy Andry during the pursuit, pulled in front of the suspect vehicle, ending the pursuit.  The three suspects inside the Honda were taken into custody without further incident.

Deputy Andry was transported to the Harrison County Hospital, where he was treated for leg and back injuries and released.

Troopers from the Indiana State Police Meth Suppression Section additionally found precursors to manufacture methamphetamine in a backpack inside the Honda.  No actual methamphetamine lab was found.

Charges are pending against the subjects involved in the incident.  The Indiana State Police was assisted during the investigation by the Orange and Harrison County Sheriff’s Departments.

Feed mill to be torn down in B’town

Brownstown council members approved two contracts to begin the process of demolishing a former feed mill across from the county courthouse in Brownstown.

The two buildings on the site in the 100 block of East Walnut Street should be gone in June, grant consultant Shannon McLeod told the council.

McLeod, who owns Priority Project Resources in Greensburg, said that, as part of the grant process, the council needed to hire an engineering firm to put together plans for the demolition of the building.

ISP in shootout with fleeing driver in Orange County

The Indiana State Police is investigating an early morning pursuit that began in Harrison County and ended in Orange County.

Investigators report that at 1:59 A.M., the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department initiated a vehicle pursuit on a black Honda Civic in Palmyra.

07125154829_January25_2007_PoliceGraphic

The pursuit traveled west on US 150 through Washington County and into Orange County, where it reached Rego.

The pursuit continued south through county roads, eventually traveling onto Valeene Road.  The suspect vehicle turned west at County Road 820 South, which dead ended.

Upon reaching the dead end point, the suspect vehicle turned around and faced the deputy.  The deputy exited his vehicle and ordered the suspect, at gunpoint, to stop.  As the suspect vehicle proceeded forward towards the deputy, the deputy began firing his weapon, striking two suspects inside the vehicle through the windshield.  The vehicle continued at the deputy, striking him and throwing him onto the hood of his patrol car.  The deputy suffered injuries to his legs and back.

An Indiana Conservation Officer was behind the deputy, blocked the suspect vehicle, and ordered the suspects out of the vehicle.  The suspects were taken into custody without further incident.

State Police investigators and crime scene technicians remain on scene this morning conducting the investigation.  Names of those involved in the incident are not being released at this time.

AHA Midwest Affiliate Spokesperson Julie Petr (Petter)of Indianapolis says heart disease is the number one killer of American women.

She says it kills more women than the next six causes of death combined.

Petr says wearing red is a simple way to raise awareness and money for research.
