Indiana State Police Encourage Motorists to Watch for Motorcycles

0

May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month and the Indiana State Police remind all motorists and motorcyclists to share the road and practice safe driving habits.

Many serious and fatal crashes occur when motorists turn in front of motorcyclists. Be aware of motorcycles, especially at intersections and while making turns and lane changes. It is difficult to accurately judge the time, speed and distance of an approaching motorcycle. Before you drive through an intersection or make a left turn, check the position of oncoming motorcycles at least 2-3 times.

Troopers urge all motorcycle riders to wear helmets. According to the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, 151 motorcycle fatalities occurred in Indiana during 2012. Of those fatalities, 122 people were not wearing helmets. Not wearing a helmet might save you two seconds, but it could cost you the rest of your life.

Construction zones and uneven road surfaces can also be a deadly area for motorcyclists. Indiana State Police and the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) encourage all motorcyclists to be extra vigilant while riding through these sites. Many roadways will be resurfaced over the next several months and motorcyclists should be aware of “edge traps,” which occur when one lane is higher than the other. An inexperienced or inattentive motorcyclist can easily lose control when encountering these “edge traps.”

Troopers offer the following safety tips for motorcyclists:
• Wear a DOT approved helmet and riding safety gear.
• Don’t consume alcohol while riding. During 2012, 36 motorcycle fatalities occurred in Indiana involving alcohol.
• Be visible. Ensure your headlight, taillight and brake light work properly.
• Wear high visibility clothing.
• Use lane positioning to increase visibility and watch for turning vehicles.
• Avoid riding in blind spots.

Pekin Murder investigation continuing; police say rumors false

Despite rumors of an arrest in the murder of a 41-year-old Pekin woman last week, police say they are still investigating and no arrest is imminent.

Both the Indiana State Police and Washington County Chief Deputy Sheriff Roger Newlon confirmed Wednesday evening that no arrest has been made.

Newlon said the investigation was continuing with the Washington County Sheriff’s Department, Pekin Town Marshall and the Washington County Prosecutor’s office all involved along with the ISP.

WSLM received several questions by phone and social media this week regarding the status of the investigation. The calls and messages passed along rumors of an arrest, who was supposed to be arrested and un-released details of the murder — all of them dismissed as rumors by the ISP.

41-year-old Kristi Williams was found dead in her home early Thursday morning and what happened remains under investigation but the Indiana State Police say now the investigation has turned to murder.

An autopsy was performed last Friday morning on  Williams at the Kentucky Medical Examiner’s Office in Louisville, KY.

The preliminary results showed Williams died due to severe trauma to her neck area. ISP Sgt. Jerry Goodin said he couldn’t comment at this time on the type of trauma involved — or whether it came from choking or a blow to the neck.

“Through our investigation that we have done over the last 24 hours, coupled with the information that we’ve received from the Kentucky Medical Examiner’s Office, we are officially calling this a murder investigation,” said Goodin on Friday.

According to ISP, who are assisting with the investigation, these results are only preliminary and the final determination of the cause of death will not be determined until all results from the autopsy are confirmed, which typically takes up to six weeks.

Newlon said the department received the 911 call from William’s boyfriend just before 7:30a on Thursday, April 22. Police rushed to the Williams’ home at 8531 State Road 335 and soon after contacted the ISP to help with the investigation.

“We’ve got several people of interest that we are speaking to,” said Goodin. “We are taking our time, that’s why we are trying to leave no stones unturned, again because we want to arrest the person responsible for Kristi’s death.”

A forensic team from Indianapolis worked the scene throughout the day Thursday to determine exactly what happened. Police are still collecting evidence at the scene.

Employees of the vet clinic became alarmed and called police when a male, later identified as Bradley Amburgey, 32, of Austin, went into the rest room at the clinic and stayed for what they thought was a lengthy time period. After Bradley Amburgey came out of the rest room an employee of the vet clinic went into the rest room and found an alleged yellow powdery substance on the sink and floor.

When Scottsburg City Police Officer Richie Barton and trooper Tracy Spencer arrived on the scene they spoke to Bradley Amburgey. While speaking to him, trooper Spencer noticed he had a yellow substance on his face area. Bradley Amburgey was found to be in possession of a prescription bottle that did not belong to him. The bottle contained seven yellow tablets identified as Hydrocodone, a Schedule Three Controlled Substance.

Bradley Amburgey was placed under arrest and charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance within 1000 Feet of a School, C-Felony. He was incarcerated at the Scott County Jail.

According to Conservation Officer Phil Nale, Wilson was hit with five pellets in the chest area and one in the left cheek.

Wilson told police he had been hunting mushrooms on Gorbetts Chapel Road in the Hoosier National Forest when he was shot. Both men told police they had not seen each other before Morgan fired his shotgun.

Nale was notified by the hospital staff about the incident at 2:35 p.m.

According to Nale, Wilson was in a thicket 60 to 70 yards away from Morgan when he was shot. Morgan was apparently sighting his weapon when he fired the shot that hit Wilson. Nale says that activity generally is reserved for a shooting range.

The incident is still under investigation and Nale says he still has to speak to Morgan about the shooting.

Arrested for the crimes of Theft and Burglary is Sherman M. Skinner, age 31, of West Mulberry Street in Salem.  Police acted on several tips that were relayed to them via phone and Facebook, resulting in the charges against Skinner.  Officer Ronnie Mays made the arrest this afternoon.

On Sunday, April 27th, 2014 at approximately 07:00 HRS, the Salem Police Department received a call about a burglary that had occurred at Nice’s Family Restaurant in Salem.  Officers Chris Cauble and Terry Corbin responded and investigated.  The bottom of the front door had been pried open and someone had entered the building.  The cash register had been taken with approximately $256.00 inside of it.

The suspect then took the cash register and left the building

They then discovered that a neighboring business, Rex Jackson’s Tune Up had been burglarized also.  A person had entered the building and taken several items, including tools.

Over the past several days, Officers Ronnie Mays, Eric Mills, Terry Corbin, and Scott Ratts have been investigating the crimes.  The officers uncovered evidence over the past few days which led to the arrest of Skinner.
