Swifty Gas Station closings in Salem, Sellersburg and around the area
The Swifty gas station at the corner of Main and Hackberry Street in Salem joins locations in Sellersburg, Connersville, Corydon and Bedford that have been closed this year.
Yellow tape went up this afternoon and pumps have been shut off most of the day.
Personnel were removing point of sale equipment from the office this afternoon and would not make any official comments.
Corporate officials from the company’s Seymour headquarters did not comment on the closing.
Several WSLM listeners and social media followers began reporting closings in Sellersburg, Corydon and Connersville.
Earlier this year, at least five Swifty’s gas stations in Louisville abruptly closed, with no word from the corporation of its plans at the properties.
According to some unofficial reports, Marathon has taken over some Swifty locations. Rumors have already circulated that Walgreens might be buying the corner to develop a store to compete with CVS Pharmacy. They had looked at locating in Salem before but the property they wanted to buy was not available for sale either time.
The company operates roughly 180 combination gas stations and convenience stores under the Swifty Food Mart banner in five states in the Midwest and the South. Swifty Oil Co. was founded in the 1960s by the Myers family and was owned and run by its chairman, Don Myers Sr.
The Columbuzz reports, it started with 2 stations and one tanker getting the Myer family into the oil business, but it was Don Myer who bought 7 stations and formed Swifty Oil Co.. The station started and continues to be the only service station which still has an attendant pump your gas.
Swifty Gas Stations expanded to 181 gasoline stations and convenience marts multiplying in a number of states since it was opened in 1963. Before that venture, Don Meyers helped his mother open Kocolene, a company now owned by it’s employees. Kocolene owns Fast Max, Smokers Host Tobacco, Ranger enterprising which is warehousing and logistics along with an environmental company Komac.
However 92-year-old Myers passed away in July two months after his death several locations closed in the Louisville area.
The current president is William R. Klinger who took this position in October 2011 and in Aug 2013 filed a Change of Registered office with the State of Indiana. One month after Don Myer’s death.
Since the family no longer wants to be part of the Swifty Oil Company it is reported “the owner passed away and the family is selling out.”

Vallonia woman found dead in Jackson State Forest
Indiana Conservation officers are investigating a death that occurred in Jackson-Washington State Forest.
The body of 40-year-old Jean Ann Berry of Vallonia, IN, was found on Saturday shortly before midnight. A preliminary investigation indicates that Berry’s death was self-inflicted.
A Starve Hollow security employee found her body at the fire tower off Sky Line Drive outside of Brownstown.
The investigation is ongoing.

Carpenter wins Indy Pole for the 2nd year in a row
Ed Carpenter won the Indianapolis 500 pole for the second straight year, posting a four-lap average of 231.067 mph.
He was the last of the nine fastest qualifiers to hit the track Sunday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He knocked off James Hinchcliffe on the last lap to start first on the May 25 race.
Hinchcliffe starts second a week after his concussion in the Grand Prix of Indianapolis. Will Power joins them on the front row.
Three-time Indy 500 champion Helio Castroneves is fourth followed by Simon Pagenaud and Marco Andretti. Carlos Munoz, Josef Newgarden and J.R. Hilderbrand are on the third row.
Juan Pablo Montoya had the fastest four-lap average among drivers ineligible to win the Indianapolis 500 pole and will start 10th.
Montoya averaged 231.007 mph and is 10th. He’s followed by reigning series champion Scott Dixon and former NASCAR champion Kurt Busch.
Busch is set to race 1,100 miles in the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 on May 25. Busch raced in NASCAR’s All-Star race the night before and flew back from Concord, North Carolina, on Sunday morning.
Defending 500 champion Tony Kanaan starts 16th.
Carpenter, an Indianapolis native and stepson of former speedway executive Tony George, owns his own team and decided in November to run only on ovals, where he excels. He turned his car over to Mike Conway on road and street courses, and has the top spot in his first race of the year.
“It was a harder run than last year,” Carpenter said. “I knew what the average was, so I was just hanging on. I was surprised last year. Obviously, we felt good this year that we had a chance this year. But it’s all about the race.”
Carpenter, the stepson of former speedway executive Tony George, was 10th in last year’s Indy 500. He is 11th driver to earn consecutive 500 poles and the first since Castroneves in 2009-10.
“Hopefully, we can close the deal this year,” he said.
As a single-car team last year, Carpenter was unable to get help on data and much-needed setup information. He didn’t want a repeat this May, so he hired Hildebrand to drive a second car at Indy for Ed Carpenter Racing. Hildebrand nearly won the Indy 500 as a rookie in 2011, but he crashed exiting the final turn and was passed for the win by the late Dan Wheldon.
Carpenter thrived in the first year of a new Indy 500 qualifying format. He had the car to beat after posting the top qualifying speed on Saturday. The fastest nine drivers advanced to Sunday’s shootout for the pole.
Hinchcliffe appeared to have no problems in the car days after he was cleared to return for his concussion. He paced as he watched Carpenter make his final run, then his chance at the pole end when Carpenter found more speed on his final lap.
For the first time, IndyCar awarded points based on qualifying runs. The top qualifier on Saturday earned 33 points, second place got 32 and so on, all the way to one point for the 33rd-place entrant.
The pole winner earned another nine points Sunday, decreasing to one point for the ninth-place starter.
Salem Pool Opens June 1; WSLM Free Swim June 21
The Salem Public Swimming Pool will open for parties Sunday, June 1, and open to the public Monday, June 2, from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m.
For the second year, WSLM RADIO will be kicking off Summer with a Free Swim Party on Saturday, June 21 from 6-8 p.m. This is part of the station’s 97 DAYS OF SUMMER promotion. The free swim is open to the first 200 who arrive. There will be snacks and drinks available while supplies last.
“We had a great time last year and people really loved coming out for this event,” said Becky White, WSLM Owner and General Manager. “We played music, signed people up for prizes and had an awesome evening. We played games with the kids and fed everyone with pizza from local merchants.”
More details will be available in June.
Due to inclement weather this winter, summer dismissal for area schools is later and as a result later opening of the pool, according to Salem Park and Rec Director Denise Newkirk.
Hours will be Monday through Saturday from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. and Sundays for scheduled parties only from 12:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Evening parties can also be scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. You may call the Park and Rec. Office to schedule, 883-2895 after June 1. Parties are $55 for one hour and $80 for two hours.
Pool hours during the Washington County Fair will be from 12:30 to 4 p.m.
Two sessions of swim lessons are planned, June 9 to June 20 and July 7 to July 18. Lessons are held in the mornings Monday through Friday. A child must be able to stand unassisted in three feet of water in order to take the lessons. You may call the Park and Recreation Department Office for more information, 883-2895 and 883-6263 after June 1 to schedule.
Daily admission for the pool is $1 for pre-schoolers and $2 for all others. Babies not yet toilet trained must wear swimming diapers in the baby pool. Refreshments are available in the snack stand.
WSLM and Colts Fan Fest at Cardinal Stadium June 26
The Indianapolis Colts will kick off their 2014 summer in June and WSLM 97.9 FM will be working to promote their stop in Louisville at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium on Thursday, June 26 from 5-7p.
Colts Fan Fests are sponsored by the Indiana Corn Marketing Council and Indiana Soybean Alliance.
WSLM 97.9 FM is the Louisville market station for the Colts and has helped host the Colts Tour for two years.
