Apartment Fire Sends One to Hospital

0

A two-alarm fire in a local apartment building sent one male resident to the hospital with burns on his hand.

One resident and another occupant of an apartment were removed by Salem Police officers after fire broke out in the attic in the Aspen Meadows complex on 1017 Aspen Drive in Salem Thursday before 5p.

Salem Firefighters responded to the fire and were able to contain the blaze to the upper two apartments of the 905 Building.

According to Salem Fire Chief Tom Day,  most of the roof above those apartments to make sure the fire was contained and extinguished.

“I was very pleased with how things progressed,” said Day. “The apartment complex had installed drywall in the attic as a fire preventative after a previous fire several years ago in another building. It helped keep the fire from spreading.”

Day said one male resident of the apartment had escaped the room soon after the fire broke out in what he believes is the attic above the apartment. He received burns to his hand and was transferred from the ER at St. Vincent Salem Hospital to the University of Louisville hospital.

Day said the Fire Marshall would be coming in today to help investigate but they are 90 percent sure the fire began in the attic above the apartment and was electrical in nature.

Salem Fire Department officers arrived on the scene and were able to remove another occupant of the apartment.

The two lower apartments on the west side of Building 905 were damaged with water and smoke. Day also said other apartments at the east end might have some smoke damage.

Aspen Meadows Apartments is a 48 unit complex complete with 1, 2, 3, and 4 bedroom apartments operated by Hoosier Uplands.IMAG2401 IMAG2396 IMAG2421 IMAG2407 IMAG2408

Officers from the Indiana State Excise Police and Peru Police Department arrested a convenience store owner on several drug-related charges today.

Officers with the Indiana State Excise Police and Peru Police Department served a search warrant at Peru Stop & Go, 452 W. Main Street, Peru, today looking for evidence related to the sale of counterfeit goods. What turned into a four-month investigation into counterfeit goods and drug sales began when officers saw what appeared to be counterfeit merchandise in the store in Nov. 2013.

Officers seized approximately 20 grams of suspected synthetic marijuana, hundreds of items of paraphernalia and an undisclosed amount of U.S. currency from the BP-branded store today.

Officers also searched a residence at 6 N. Holman in Peru, where they also seized more suspected synthetic marijuana and an undisclosed amount of U.S. currency.

As a result of this investigation, store owner Amin Ali Saleh, 36, of Peru, was arrested on preliminary charges of Possession of Synthetic Marijuana, Possession of Lookalike Substance, Dealing in Synthetic Marijuana and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Officers are continuing their investigation into possible counterfeiting and forgery.

Anyone with information concerning violations of Indiana law anywhere that alcohol or tobacco products are sold should contact the State Excise Police at (765) 362-8815.

Officers were assisted by Miami County Prosecutor Bruce Embrey throughout their investigation.

As the enforcement division of the Indiana Alcohol and Tobacco Commission, the primary mission of the Indiana State Excise Police is to promote public safety by enforcing Indiana’s Alcoholic Beverage Code. While excise officers have the authority to enforce any state law, they focus primarily on alcohol, tobacco and related laws.

Nabors’ rendition of the song became a beloved tradition of “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing” since he first performed it in 1972. Always accompanied by the Purdue “All American” Marching Band and thousands of fans singing in unison throughout the massive facility, Nabors has performed the song 34 times in person at IMS.

“The first time that I ever sang at the Indy 500 in 1972, the warmth I got from the crowd immediately made me become a lifetime Hoosier; and I’ve always cherished it,” Nabors said. “I’ll see you all in May; but I’ve come to the conclusion that my health doesn’t permit me to travel very much anymore. So I’ll be retiring from singing ‘Back Home Again’ at the Indy 500 after this year.

“I want to give a special thanks to everyone; and particularly the Hulman George family, who have a special place in my heart and are my wonderful friends. I’ve loved every minute of it.”

Nabors, 83, has performed at the Indianapolis 500 every year since 1987 with the exception of 2007 and 2012 races that he missed due to illness. A rendition of the song he performed at his home in Hawaii was played on the video screens at IMS prior to the 2012 race to the delight of his countless fans in attendance and millions watching on worldwide television.

“There are many special moments leading up to the start of the Indianapolis 500, but one of the most anticipated every year is when Jim Nabors sings ‘Back Home Again in Indiana,”‘ said J. Douglas Boles, Indianapolis Motor Speedway president. “This year will be even more special as Indianapolis 500 fans will cheer not only for what the song means but for what Jim Nabors has meant to the Indianapolis 500.”

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway will honor and thank Nabors for his years of performance in several ways during Indianapolis 500 race weekend that will be announced at a later date. Fans are encouraged to tell their Nabors stories at  IMS.com/WeAllHaveAStory.

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway will not announce a future plan for the “(Back Home Again in) Indiana” performance until after this year’s Indianapolis 500.

“We want the focus for this year to be on celebrating Jim’s final performance at Indianapolis,” said Boles.”

The 98th running of the Indianapolis 500 will take place on Sunday, May 25.
