Marty Allen Lee Storms, 15, of Fredericksburg

Marty Allen Lee Storms, age 15, of Fredericksburg, passed away September 16, in an accident on Becks Mill Road.

Marty was born August 27, 2008, in Floyd County, Indiana, the son of Ricky and Andrea Fenwick Storms.  He was an eighth-grade student at West Washington School, where he participated in Football, Baseball, and Basketball.

He is survived by his parents:  Ricky and Andrea Storms of Fredericksburg, two brothers:  Gunner Lee Storms and Richard Lee Storms Jr. both of Fredericksburg, a sister:  Kabella Mae Storms of Fredericksburg, grandparents:  Edward and Tina Storms of Pekin, Steve Dalton of New Haven, Kentucky, and Dianna Dalton of New Salisbury, and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11:00AM at Westview Christian Church with Pastor Greg Matthew officiating. 

Burial will follow in Kansas Cemetery. 

Visitation will be Wednesday from 4-8PM at Westview Christian Church and Friday from 9AM-time of service at the church.

James David “Dave” Phillips, 81 of Paoli, Indiana, passed away Saturday, September 16, 2023 at his residence. He was born April 26, 1942 in Paoli, Indiana to James W Phillips and Lillie Walls Phillips.

He married Barbara Compton on August 31, 1961 and she survives.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Jerry Max and Scott Phillips, sister Carol Kellams, and great grandson Quillie Max.

Dave worked as a heavy equipment operator for Reynolds Inc and Mitchell and Stark.  He was also a 54 year member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 181, Louisville, KY.

Survivors include: Wife: Barbara Phillips, Paoli, IN

Son: David (Katrina) Phillips, Paoli, IN

Daughters:

Ginnie Phillips (companion Bill Tegarden) Paoli, IN

Lisa (Gary) Allen. New Salisbury, IN

Brothers:

Rodney “Joe” (Debbie) Phillips, Paoli, IN

Kevin (Lisa) Phillips, West Baden, IN

Kippy (Geri) Phillips, Paoli, IN

Ollie (companion Mary Lou Patton) Phillips Paoli, IN

Also surviving Dave are 3 grandchildren: Tyler Phillips, Autumn Allen, and Summer Allen, and 4 great grandchildren: Harleigh Poe, Abby Poe, Lynlie Phillips, and Maggie Phillips.

Visitation will be held from 3:00 – 7:00 PM, Wednesday, September 20, 2023 at Dillman Scott Funeral Home, 226 West Campbell Street, Paoli, Indiana. With cremation to follow.  The family will have a private graveside service at a later date.

Addiction and Recovery Workshop Free on Sept. 19

The Washington County Public Defender’s Office is sponsoring a free workshop on Sept. 19 about addiction and recovery services from 5-7p at the Washington County Government Building in the lower level.

Learn how you can get help for issues caused by addition and substance abuse. 

This is a free workshop for the community and those in attendance can ask questions about recovery and addiction and get answers as well as resources and support. 

This event is sponsored by the Washington County Public Defender’s Office and funded by a grant from the Washington County Substance Abuse Council.

15-Year-Old Killed in Roll Over Crash

A 15-year-old Fredericksburg teen, who was driving a pickup on Beck’s Mill Road, died Saturday afternoon from injuries sustained when he lost control of the vehicle and it rolled over.

Marty Storms was unconscious when first responders arrived. He was transported to St. Vincent Hospital in Salem where he was later pronounced deceased.

Storms was an 8th grader at West Washington School  

 

A 14-year-old passenger in the truck, Brandon Chinn of Greenville, was transported by family to Harrison County Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

“Our hearts go out to the Storms family,” said Sheriff Brent Miller. “Losing a child is a tragedy and Marty’s death will have a deep impact on his family as well as West Washington High School, where he was a student, and the entire community.”

The crash was reported at 1:29 p.m. Saturday. Sheriff’s Deputy Tory Hildreth and Captain Joseph Keltner of the Washington County Sheriff’s Department, along with the Washington County Ambulance Service, Blue River Fire Department and Posey Township Fire Department, responded.

They found a 1997 Ford Ranger pickup truck, occupied by two male juveniles, at 9834 South Beck’s Mill Road, Fredericksburg.

Statements from witnesses, as well as Chinn, identified Storms as the driver.

Evidence indicates the truck was southbound at a high rate of speed.

As Storms negotiated a curve, the truck began sliding sideways. He attempted to correct the truck, but it began to overturn and roll over.

“Young people can sometimes think they are invincible, but none of us are,” said Sheriff Miller. “Beck’s Mill Road has many curves and hills and can be challenging for experienced drivers. It’s very dangerous for those who are inexperienced.”

At 15, Storms did not have a driver’s license. In Indiana, 15-year-olds with learner’s permits are allowed to drive only with an adult, licensed driver in the vehicle.
