Richard Dixon, age 73 of Salem

Richard Dixon, age 73 of Salem, Indiana passed away Friday, August 25,
2023 at 11:41 am, in his residence.

Born September 20, 1949 in Jamestown, Kentucky, he was the son of the
late Reynolds Dixon and Ada L. (Stephens) Dixon.

Life resident of Washington County and on 12/09/1977 he married Terry D.
(Costin) Dixon.

He was retired from The Salem Fire Department after 20+ years and was a
volunteer before joining the Department full time. He also drove for the
Amish community in retirement.

Survivors include:
Wife: Terry D. (Costin) Dixon
Son: Duane K. (Lana) Hamilton of Salem, Indiana;
Daughter: Ginger Butler of Salem, Indiana;
Daughter: Kerri (Chuck) Williams of Salem, Indiana;
Daughter: Tabi Wooten of Crothersville, Indiana;
Brother: Homer Dixon of Louisville, Kentucky.

3 granddaughters: Paige Devliegher (Alex), Natasha Butler, Kelli Longwell
3 grandsons: Nathan Williams (Ashley), Dylan Williams, Blake Wright
great grandchildren: Easton and Cole Williams, Jayce Longwell and Jarvis
Motley.
He was preceded in death by a grandson Bailey Layne Hamilton.

Funeral Service: 11:00 am Tuesday at Dawalt Funeral Home with Matt
Gorman officiating. Interment at Crown Hill Cemetery Salem, Indiana.
Visitation: 4 to 7 pm Monday and 9 to 11 am Tuesday at Dawalt Funeral Home.

Robert C. Lyles, age 93 of Salem

Robert C. Lyles, age 93 of Salem, passed away Thursday, August 24, 2023,
in his residence.

Born December 7, 1929 in Salem, Indiana, he was the son of the late
Charles E. and Esther (Thompson) Lyles.

He was retired farmer and co-owner of Day & Lyles Auction Service. He
was a member of the Canton Christian Church, had been a life resident of
Washington County, was a 1949 graduate of Salem High School and a member
of the American Quarter Horse Association.

On December 17, 1950 he married N. Lounell (Spurgeon) Lyles, who passed
away February 12, 2013. On October 23, 2018, he married Margaret
(Fordyce) Lyles, who survives.

Also surviving are: Sister: Roslyn Spurgeon of Salem; Grandchildren:
Josh Hogan, Tara Lewellen, Clayton Hogan and Kati Hogan and Great
Grandchildren: Dylan Hogan, Ella Lewellen, Neva Lewellen, Corbin Hogan,
Natalee Troutman, Dalton Troutman and Elizabeth Troutman.

He was preceded in death by 1 daughter (Sherry Hogan) and 2 sisters.

Funeral Service: 11:00 am Friday September 1, 2023 at Dawalt Funeral
Home, followed by interment in Winslow Cemetery.
Visitation: 4 to 8 pm Thursday August 31, 2023 and 9 am until the time
of the services on Friday.

ISP Investigating Fatal Crash on West Street in New Albany

The Indiana State Police is investigating a crash that occurred early Friday morning. At approximately 5:51 am, New Albany Police Department responded to the intersection of West Street and Albany Street for a pedestrian that was deceased in the roadway.

Officers with New Albany Police Department contacted the Indiana State Police for the investigation.

A preliminary investigation by Indiana State Police Detectives and a Crash reconstructionist were able to determine that Jennifer Yatalese, 42, of New Albany was struck by a Hyundai passenger car.

The Floyd County Coroner pronounced Yatalese deceased at the scene. Drug and alcohol tests were administered to the driver of the Hyundai.

This case will be forwarded to the Floyd County Prosecutor’s Office for review.

Drugs and alcohol were not believed to be a factor in this crash.

Micheal Todd Chastain, age 45 of Salem

Micheal Todd Chastain, age 45 of Salem, passed away Monday, August 7, 2023 in St. Vincent Salem Hospital.

Born February 16, 1978 in Big Stone Gap, Virginia, he was the son of the late Ronald Lee Chastain Sr. and Vickie Sue (Pendygraft) Chastain.

He had been a life resident of Washington County and attended West Washington High School.

He was a self-employed Heavy Equipment Operator, Welder and Fabricator and Power House Maintenance Operator

Survivors include:  Son Caleb Hart of Salem;  Daughter: Shelby Wells of Salem;  2 Brothers: Joey and Roger Keith Chastain, both of Salem and the Mothers of his children: Debbie Wells and Sarah Ponsford, both of Salem.
He was preceded in death by his father: Ronald Chastain Sr., mother and step-father: Vickie Sue and Boyd Underwood and brother, Ronald Chastain Jr.

Funeral Service: 2:00 pm Monday at Dawalt Funeral Home, followed by interment in Crown Hill Cemetery.

Visitation: 4 to 8 pm Sunday and 11 am until the time of the service on Monday.

 

Salem Man Killed Last Night on Organ Springs Road

A Salem man was pronounced dead last night after being shot and taken to St. Vincent Hospital in Salem. 

Dead is Michael T. Chastain of Salem. Police did not release his age or address. 

According to Indiana State Police detectives, at approximately 6:32 PM on Monday, Washington County 911 received a phone call regarding a shooting at 7783 S. Organ Springs Road in Salem. 

Washington County Sheriff’s Department responded and found that Chastain had been shot in the front yard of that address. 

The investigation yielded that Chastain showed up at that address and drove through the front yard. 

He ultimately exited his vehicle and grabbed the homeowner and forced him to the ground. 

Police did not provide the names of the homeowners. 

Chastain then pulled a weapon and pointed it at the homeowner’s head. 

The homeowner’s wife noticed this from inside the residence.  She then grabbed her handgun and exited the house and ultimately shot Chastain. 

Chastain was transported to St. Vincent Hospital in Salem where he was pronounced dead.

Chastain’s family has been notified.

Barry Scott Winslow, 59, of Salem

Barry Scott Winslow, age 59, of Salem, passed away Friday, August 4 at his home.

Barry was born December 28, 1963 in Salem the son of Max and Imogene Trueblood Winslow. He was the retired owner of Winslow Motors. He was an avid Mustang collector, and racing fan.

He is survived by his son: Landon Winslow (Angel Bryant) of Salem, a granddaughter: Lilah Winslow, a sister: Marla Hannah (Charles) of Salem, his father: Max Winslow of Salem, Cynthia Walton Winslow of Salem, and two nephews: Josh Anderson (Kim Dick) of Salem, and Jake Anderson (Mickie) of Floyds Knobs.

He is preceded in death by his mother: Imogene Winslow, a step-son: Logan Gilstrap, and a great-nephew: Konnar Anderson.

Funeral services will be held at 11AM Tuesday at Weathers Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Crown Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held Monday from 4-8PM, and Tuesday from 9AM-until time of service.

Helen B. Ratts age 105, of Salem

Mrs. Helen B. Ratts age 105, of Salem, passed away Wednesday, August 2 at her home.

Mrs. Ratts was born August 12, 1917 in Clark County the daughter of Albert Jefferson Brown and Susie Elizabeth Sears Brown. She was a member of the Borden Church of Christ. She was also a member of The Homemaker’s Club, The Women’s Study Club, Tri Kappa and The International Inkwell Society. She enjoyed crocheting, making dried flower arrangements, playing the piano and doing daily crossword puzzles.

Mrs. Ratts is survived by two sons: Charles N. “Chuck” Ratts (Kathie Chastain) of Trafalgar, Indiana and Dean Ratts (Kym Hedrick) of Salem, four grandsons: Bradley Ratts, Jason Ratts, Joshua Ratts, Benjamin Ratts and eight great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Charles R. Ratts, a brother: Gerald Brown and two sisters: Uva Fisher and Elsie McKinley.

Salem Man Arrested for Louisville Murder

A 27-year-old Salem man was arrested hours after a fatal shooting in the Clifton Heights neighborhood on Wednesday night.

Police say Benjamen Strange, 27, of Salem, Indiana, was arrested about 15 minutes south of Borden on Wednesday evening.

He was charged with murder after a shooting happened at around 4 p.m. on Wednesday in the 300 block of Idlewylde in Louisville.

Strange was booked at the Michael L. Becher Adult Correctional Complex in Clark County on a murder charge and he will eventually be extradited back to Kentucky.

LMPD said they arrived on the scene around 3:30p and found a man suffering from gunshot wounds, who later died at the scene.

“The successful apprehension of Mr. Strange is a testament to the collaboration and dedication of law enforcement agencies in our region. I want to extend my gratitude to the Southeast Regional SWAT team, Washington County Sheriff’s Office and LMPD for their support in this operation,” said Clark County Sherriff Scottie Maples.

John Lewis Edward Pebley, age 58 of Campbellsburg

John Lewis Edward Pebley, age 58 of Campbellsburg, Indiana passed away
Thursday, July 27, 2023 at 09:25 am, in his residence.

Born June 1, 1965 in Jacksonville, Florida, he was the son of the late
Lonnie Pebley and Betty (Cozene) Smiley.

After high school John entered in to the military. He then went on to
drive a truck for a long haul trucking company until he met his wife,
Davena Reasoner. They were married in August 2008.
He then work for GKN in Salem and retired after 15 years.

Survivors include:
Wife: Davena D.Reasoner-Pebley
2 daughters: Christine and Sharon; 2 sons: Jesse and Christopher; and 6
grandchildren.

There will be a Visitation from 12 Noon to 2pm Thursday Augutst 10th at
Dawalt Funeral Home 204 East Market St. in Salem, Indiana 47167
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Thursday following the
visitation at Dawalt Funeral Home with Pastor Dave officiating.

Floyd E. Balentine, age 81 of Pekin

Floyd E. Balentine, age 81 of Pekin, Indiana passed away Sunday, July
30, 2023 in his residence.

Born July 31, 1941 in Salem, Indiana, he was the son of the late Claude
Ray and Irene (Martin) Balentine.

He retired from UHL Truck Sales and was a member of the Bunker Hill
Christian Church.

He married Sharon Kay (Scott) Balentine, who passed away June 9, 2014.

Survivors include: 4 Sons: Scott and Larry Balentine, both of Pekin,
Mark and Jimmy Balentine, both of Salem; 2 Daughters: Linda Starrett and
Virginia Borden, both of Salem; 2 Brothers: Ernie and Randy Balentine; 2
Sisters: Jean Churchman and Mary Ann Lang; 15 grandchildren and 14 great
grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by: 1 grandson, Logan Starrett, a son-in-law,
Rick Starrett, 3 sisters Virginia, Trudy and Lily Lanham and 2 brothers:
Carl and Kenneth Balentine.

Funeral Service: 1:00 pm Thursday at Dawalt Funeral Home, followed by
interment in Bunker Hill Cemetery.

Visitation: 4 to 8 pm Wednesday and 9 am until the time of the service
on Thursday.
