Illinois Man Killed in Jackson County Crash

0

Early this morning, Troopers from the Indiana State Police-Versailles Post began investigating a single vehicle crash on I-65 in Jackson County that claimed the life of a Chicago, Illinois man.

The initial investigation by Indiana State Police Crash Reconstructionists indicated that at approximately 4:00 am this morning, a 2016 Freightliner semi pulling a box trailer, being driven by Frederick D. Felder, age 37, Chicago, Illinois was traveling southbound on I-65 near the 43 mile marker.  For an unknown reason, Felder’s vehicle left the west side of the roadway.  The vehicle struck trees and a fence before coming to a rest.

Initial first responders on the scene found Felder deceased inside of the vehicle.  The investigation is ongoing to determine whether he died as a result of the collision or whether a medical issue played a role in the crash.  The Jackson County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene to pronounce Felder deceased.

The investigation is ongoing.  Toxicology results are pending although alcohol and drugs are not suspected to be factors.  The right lane of I-65 Southbound was closed through the area for several hours for crash investigation and cleanup.

Frederick Felder’s family has been notified.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, Jackson County EMS, Seymour Fire Department, Vernon Township Fire Department, and the Jackson County Coroner’s Office assisted at the scene.

Bierly To Serve 45 Years For Killing Toddler

0

A Pekin woman who was charged with murder following the death of a 2-year-old child in her care in September 2021 will serve 45 years in prison, said Washington County Prosecutor Tara Coats Hunt.

Sarah M. Bierly, 32, East Poplar St., was sentenced Thursday morning in Washington Circuit Court.

Her sentence will be fully executed in the Indiana Department of Corrections with no time suspended.

In addition, she is deemed a violent predator and will be required to register as such for life.

Bierly had earlier entered a plea agreement.

“This case involved a completely innocent and defenseless toddler – a little girl who will never get to grow up because of the actions of her caregiver,” said Prosecutor Hunt. “Child abuse is a horrific crime and in this case, a child paid the ultimate price for it. As Prosecutor of this county, it is my top priority to protect our most vulnerable members of the community.”

Circuit Court Judge Larry Medlock addressed Bierly at sentencing, telling her, “Your actions changed the course of so many lives. Baby M will not get to grow and experience the things she should get to experience,” he said, noting that crimes committed against children are the most heinous.

Prosecutor Hunt credited law enforcement for excellent work. “I want to thank Detective Travis Baker of the Indiana State Police and Detective Brad Naugle of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office for their good investigative work which led us to this murder conviction and justice for Baby M,” she said.

When first responders arrived at the home on Sept. 14, 2021, they found an unresponsive 2-year-old. The girl was transported by ambulance to St. Vincent Hospital in Salem where she was pronounced dead.

The child had been placed at the residence a month earlier by the Department of Child Services to live on a trial basis with her father, Simon A. McDowell, and his girlfriend, Bierly.

According to the probable cause affidavit, the 911 call regarding the toddler was not placed by either McDowell or Bierly, but by a family member of Bierly’s whom she had called for help.

After McDowell left for work around 1:30 p.m. on Sept. 13, Bierly was the caregiver for the child. She told police the little girl was difficult to care for because she wouldn’t do as she was told.

Bierly’s version of events changed during interviews with detectives regarding the girl’s death.

Initially, she said the girl had hurt herself during a diaper change. Bierly said the child hit the side of her face on a plastic tote. Bierly said after the girl’s diaper was changed, she wouldn’t go to bed.

Bierly said the child scratched her face so she “back-handed” her across the face. She then said the little girl threw herself backward, striking the back of her head on the carpeted floor.

Bierly said she listened to the child’s heart and said it was “fluttering a little.” She said she put the child to bed and when she checked on her a few minutes later, her lips were blue.

An autopsy found the child died from multiple blunt force injuries and determined the manner of death to be homicide. Following the autopsy, police interviewed Bierly again.

This time, Bierly said she had been in the kitchen with the child and was holding her up in front of her by her hips when the child scratched her in the face. Bierly said she then forcefully threw the toddler onto the hard kitchen floor.

The little girl appeared to be unconscious. Bierly said she performed CPR but did not call 911, explaining she was afraid McDowell would be mad at her and feared it would further complicate their custodial situation with the child.

“The family member who immediately called 911 after arriving at the home and seeing the little girl did what any responsible adult would do in that situation,” said Prosecutor Hunt. “I want to remind people that anyone who has reason to suspect child neglect or abuse is required by law to make a report. The hotline number is 1-800-800-5556 and callers may remain anonymous.”

Prosecutor Charges Sands in Death of State Trooper

0

DeKalb County Prosecuting Attorney Neal R. Blythe announced today that Terry D. Sands II has been charged with Murder, Resisting Law Enforcement (Level 2 Felony), Operating With a Controlled Substance Resulting in Death (Level 4 Felony), and Resisting Law Enforcement (A Misdemeanor) for his actions on the day of March 3, 2023 that led to the death of Indiana State Police Master Trooper .

At approximately 4:35 P.M. on March 3, 2023, Master Trooper Bailey was working traffic on I-69 when he became aware of a pursuit just south of him.

Master Trooper Bailey attempted to assist with the pursuit, and was out of his car working to help the Fort Wayne Police Department officer who was pursuing Terry Sands II.

Terry Sands II is alleged to have knowingly or intentionally turned his car directly towards Master Trooper Bailey, which resulted in Master Trooper Bailey being struck and killed by Sands’ vehicle.

Our hearts, thoughts, and prayers continue to go out to the family of Master Trooper Bailey.

They have been forced to face the most horrible tragedy any family could ever suffer.  Master Trooper Bailey served the people of DeKalb County and the State of Indiana with honor and courage, and his loss has left a hole in our community.

Today’s announcement is the first step towards seeking justice for Master Trooper Bailey, his family and friends, and the law enforcement community.

The case is pending and the investigation is still ongoing.  A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and every Defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

ISP Investigating Police-Involved Shooting in Jeffersonville

0

Detectives with the Indiana State Police are investigating a police-involved shooting in Jeffersonville after Jeffersonville Police responded to a man-with-a-gun call.

A preliminary investigation by ISP detectives reveals that around 7 pm on Thursday, officers with the Jeffersonville Police Department responded to the apartment complex at 1501 E. 8th Street after receiving a 911 call about an allegedly mentally disturbed man walking around the parking area while armed with a handgun.

ISP detectives believe that shortly after Jeffersonville officers arrived and made contact with the man, he fired a pistol in the air and then pointed the gun toward the officers.

As a result, at least one officer fired their department weapon, striking the subject. After officers provided life-saving measures, the man was immediately taken to University Hospital in Louisville by ambulance. He is currently listed in Critical Condition.

No officers were injured, and officers from both departments checked to ensure no apartment residents were harmed.

ISP detectives are investigating at the request of Jeffersonville Police Chief Kenny Kavanaugh.

This is an ongoing investigation, and more information will be released as it becomes available.

Norma Lee Roberts, 87, of Corydon

0

Norma Lee Roberts, 87, of Corydon, Indiana died on March 3, 2023 at Todd-Dickey Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Leavenworth, Indiana.  She was born on June 28, 1935 to the late Emmett E. and Mary Jane (Neafus) Carlisle in Louisville, Kentucky where she lived, was educated, and attended the Walnut Street Baptist Church.

There she met her future husband, Lloyd B. Roberts, Sr., an Army soldier stationed at Fort Knox, who happened to be at the church playing the piano.  They had six children together and were happily married for sixty-seven years.

Lloyd preceded Norma in death, as did a daughter, Karen Roberts, and two grandsons, Brian Kumm and Jackson Proctor.

She is survived by her children, Mary Kumm and her husband, Ernie; Laura Moss and her husband, Pat; Britton Roberts and his wife, Kathy; Paul Roberts and his wife Elizabeth, and Jennifer Proctor and her husband John; nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

A pastor’s wife and mother of six, Norma will be remembered as a pleasant, friendly soul, quick with a laugh and a smile.  She is probably most remembered by the hundreds of students from Corydon Elementary School, where she worked for over a decade as the “lunch lady.”  Continuing to serve others, she later in life delivered food for Meals of Wheels in Milltown, Indiana.

Services will be private and interment will follow in the Milltown Baptist Cemetery.

Memorial contributions can be made in Norma’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Association at:  act.alz.org
