Fleeing Driver Stopped with PIT Maneuver Along I-65
A vehicle pursuit in southern Indiana concluded with the use of a PIT (Precision Immobilization Technique) maneuver on I-65.
Around 12:30 PM, Senior Trooper Randel Miller from the Indiana State Police (ISP) Drug Interdiction Unit attempted to stop a blue Chevrolet Trailblazer for following too closely on I-65 near the 51-mile marker.
The driver, identified as 34-year-old Kyle Edward Jurkovic of Joliet, Illinois, refused to stop and accelerated away from the trooper.
Jurkovic fled south on I-65 at extreme speeds, sometimes exceeding 100 mph.
Multiple units from the ISP and local law enforcement agencies responded to assist, but Jurkovic continued southbound, weaving through traffic.
The pursuit continued into Scott County, where a Scott County deputy successfully deployed Stop Stick tire deflation devices, which Jurkovic struck with at least one tire. After continuing south, he exited onto State Road 56 at the Scottsburg exit and attempted to re-enter I-65 via the northbound on-ramp.
As Jurkovic accelerated northbound on the ramp, Trooper Miller executed the PIT maneuver on the Trailblazer, bringing the pursuit to a stop as the Blazer spun off the on-ramp and overturned onto the emergency lane of northbound I-65.
Kyle Jurkovic was taken into custody once the vehicle came to a stop. Medical personnel assessed Jurkovic before officers transported him to the Jackson County Jail.
Jurkovic has been charged with Resisting Law Enforcement with a Vehicle (Level 6 Felony), Reckless Driving (A Misdemeanor), Possession of Marijuana (B Misdemeanor), and Possession of Paraphernalia (A Misdemeanor).
Salem Man Arrested After Accident That Sends Two To Hospital
A 62-year-old Salem man is in jail after being arrested following an accident at 704 East Hackberry Street involving a vehicle and a female and juvenile male.
Gary Young, 62, Salem was arrested and charged with the following:
- Operating a vehicle with a controlled substance in the person’s body
- Operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing serious bodily injury
- Operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person
- Possession of methamphetamine
Young was arrested by the Salem Police Department after chemical testing at St. Vincent Hospital and was booked into the Washington County Detention Center at 4:38pm.
Washington County Ambulance Service, Salem Fire Department, Salem Police Department and the Washington County Sheriff’s Department were called to the scene.
Young’s vehicle struck a female and a child, who were both flown by helicopter ambulance to hospitals in Louisville.
It was reported the 5-year-old boy had a cracked skull.
