DIY Lawncare Program Series Starting in April

Scott County is partnering with Purdue Extension – Washington County to host a four-week D-I-Y (Do It Yourself) Lawncare program series on Thursday evenings in April.

The program can accommodate 20 in-person participants with additional participants joining virtually via Zoom from 6:00-8:00 pm on April 7, April 14, April 21, and April 28. In-person participants will meet at the Heritage Station/Train Depot (90 N. Main St., Scottsburg, IN 47170).

Virtual participants will receive a Zoom link.

DIY Lawncare is a four-week, two hours per session course designed for homeowners, property renters,
and homeowner associations. Session topics include: Basics of Taking Care of Lawns; Lawn Pests and Problems; Weed Identification and Management; and Seeding Establishment and Lawn Renovation.

Whether new or experienced at lawncare, understanding the basics of turf management will help create a lawn that others will look at with envy!

Participants will receive the turf management skills and
knowledge needed to lay the groundwork for creating, establishing, and maintaining a lawn.

Participants must register by Thursday, March 31.

Program fees are $20 per participant, or $30 for two
family/business members sharing program materials.

Jerry S. Wynn, age 62 of Campbellsburg

Jerry S. Wynn, age 62 of Campbellsburg, passed away Sunday, March 6, 2022, in his residence.

Born April 26, 1959 in Salem, Indiana, he was the son of the late Robert J. and Joy Mae (Martin) Wynn.

He was a former employee of Amtek, MPP and the old Childcraft Inc, was a member of the First Christian Church of Salem and attended the Kansas Church of Christ.

He had been a resident of Washington County for most of his life and was a sports coach for Little League for many years.

He was a singer/songwriter, played guitar, dabbled in antiques and enjoyed caving and photography.

On May 5, 1989 he married Jenine (Nice) Wynn, who survives.

Also surviving are: Daughter: Savannah (Scott) Mancine; 2 Sons: Seth (Samantha) Wynn and Daman Wynn; Mother: Joy Wynn; Sister: Rhonda (Jeff) Geralde; Grandchildren: Gaven, Peyton, Rylan, Rayden, Maverich, Jaxton and Bexley and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father: Robert (Bob) Wynn and brother, Steven Wynn.

Funeral Service: 11:00 am Thursday at Dawalt Funeral Home, followed by interment in Crown Hill Cemetery.

Visitation: 4 to 8 pm Wednesday and 9 am until the time of the service on Thursday.

Police Find Body of Deceased Male in Brownstown

An autopsy is scheduled for this afternoon to determine the cause of death of a man found dead in his vehicle yesterday in Brownstown.

At approximately 2:30 pm yesterday, the Brownstown Police Department responded to a call of an unresponsive man in a vehicle near the address of 917 South Main Street in Brownstown. 

Detectives with the Indiana State Police-Versailles Post began conducting a death investigation after an adult male was found deceased in a vehicle in Brownstown, Indiana.

Officers responded and located the man in a vehicle parked along the street near the residence. 

Jackson County EMS and the Brownstown Fire Department also responded to provide medical aid. 

It was soon determined that the adult male had already passed away. 

He was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Jackson County Coroner’s Office.

The identity of the deceased man is also expected to be released later today after the identity is confirmed and the family is notified.

Indiana State Police Detectives are being assisted in the ongoing investigation by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, Brownstown Police Department, and Jackson County Coroner’s Office.   

Carolyn Sue Fultz Farmer, age 74 of Campbellsburg

Carolyn Sue Fultz Farmer, age 74 of Campbellsburg, Indiana passed away Sunday, March 6, 2022 at 1:55 am, in Baptist Health Floyd New Albany.

Born November 2, 1947 in Louisville, Kentucky, she was the daughter of the late Merril Anthony and Mable Catherine (Haub) Huff.

On September 23, 1966 she married Robert Fultz, who passed away February 21, 1995, then on December 28, 2002 she married Hansley Farmer, who survives.

Sue was a life resident of Washington County, a member of the Westview Christian Church, a 1965 Graduate of West Washington High School and a 1996 graduate of Indiana University with a Bachelors’ Degree in Psychology.

In 2017 she retired from Meadow View Health and Rehab in Salem, was a former cosmetologist and worked for Dr. Crouch, Hoosier Uplands and was known for her beautiful penmanship. She had been a member of the DAR and Colonial Dames, Tri Kappa Sorority, the Pekin Saddle Club and she enjoyed quilting and was a member of the IU Alumni Association.

Survivors include: Husband: Hansley Farmer of Campbellsburg, 2
Daughters: Stephanie (Dwayne) Lashbrooks of Salem and Stacy (Tim) Miller of Campbellsburg; Stepson: Troy (Lisa) Farmer of Campbellsburg; 2 Stepdaughters: Deanna (Bobby) Bostock of Paoli and Tammy (Travis Elliott of Campbellsburg; Brother: Alvin Huff of Salem; Grandchildren: Jacob, Cora and Emma Miller and Amanda and Gabriel Porter; Step Grandchildren: Brandon, Jalisa, Cheralyn, Devin, Chelsey, Mariah and Wade and 7 great grandchildren.

Visitation: 4 to 8 pm Tuesday at Dawalt Funeral Home and after 10 am Wednesday at Westview Christian Church.

Funeral Service: 11:00 am Wednesday at Westview Christian Church with Bro.Greg Matthews officiating.
Interment will follow the service at Crown Hill Cemetery in Salem.

Louisville Man Arrested for Dealing Fentanyl and Methamphetamine

A Louisville man was arrested on several felony drug charges Wednesday morning after being stopped for speeding.  

Shortly after eleven Wednesday morning, Master Trooper Jackie Smith with the Sellersburg Post All Crimes Policing squad stopped a black 2017 Nissan Maxima for speeding on I-64 near the Georgetown exit.

Trooper Smith had clocked the Nissan going 79mph in a 55mph zone. While speaking with the driver, 26-year-old Cornelius Eugene Langston Jr. of Louisville, Kentucky, Trooper Smith observed a Glock 9mm handgun lying in plain sight. Further investigation revealed that Langston did not have a firearms permit and was also in possession of marijuana.

Eugene Langston was then taken into custody on the firearms violation and transported to the Floyd County Jail.  

While at the jail, Floyd County Corrections officers found Langston was also concealing approximately 12 grams of Fentanyl and 7 grams of Methamphetamine. He was also carrying $3,000.00 in cash.  

As a result of the investigation, Eugene Langston is charged with the following: 

  1. Dealing in a Narcotic Drug over 10 grams – Level 2 Felony
  2. Dealing in Methamphetamine – Level 2 Felony
  3. Possession of a Narcotic Drug – Level 3 Felony
  4. Possession of Methamphetamine – Level 4 Felony
  5. Possession of marijuana with a prior drug conviction – A misdemeanor
  6. Possession of a handgun without a handgun license. A misdemeanor

Trooper Smith was assisted by Floyd County Corrections officers, the Floyd County Sheriff’s Department, and fellow officers from the Sellersburg Post All Crimes Policing Squad.

Two Killed in Early Morning Crash on SR 60

Two men were killed this morning in a three-car accident on State Road 60 West of Salem while a third driver remains in the hospital.

Jerod Dotts, 41, Campbellsburg was pronounced dead at the scene.

Wyatt Batchelor, 62, Campbellsburg died on the way to the local hospital.

Police were called to West State Road 60 at approximately 5:46 A.M. after a 9-11 call.

Washington County Sheriff’s Department Deputies responded to  a report of a multiple vehicle crash.

According to Sgt. Lucas Gray, the preliminary investigation indicated that a 2006 Chevy Colorado pickup truck, driven by Dotts was west bound on State Road 60 when it collided head-on with an east bound 2014 Ford F-150, driven by Batchelor.

After the crash occurred, a west bound 2017 Toyota Tacoma, driven by Brent Ingram of Campbellsburg, crashed into the Chevy Colorado which was stationary in the roadway. 

Ingram was transported to St. Vincent Hospital in Salem for what is believed to be minor injury. 

Crash scene reconstructionists from the Indiana State Police were called to the scene to assist.

Traffic was rerouted around the area along with local school buses while officers worked at the scene. 

The road was closed for most of the morning. The crash is still under investigation at this time.  

Chester Ellis Fultz, age 100, of Salem

Chester Ellis Fultz, age 100, of Salem, passed away Saturday, February 26, 2022 at Northwood Residence.  Born January 28, 1922 in Salem, he was the son of the late Ellis Earl Fultz and Edith Emily (Martin) Fultz.

Chester was a WW II Navy Veteran stationed aboard the USS St. Louis; he retired from General Electric in Louisville with 27+ years of service; was a member of Mill Creek Baptist Church; and attended Cross Roads Baptist Church.

He is survived by his children: Chris Fultz (Sharon), Wesley Fultz (Linda), Melvin Fultz (Shelley), and Marlita Bell (Jerry); his wife: Patricia (Walton) Fultz; 1 sister: Elizabeth Sedgwick; several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his children, Marjorie (Hague) Fultz; 1 son: Gary Lynn Fultz; 3 brothers; 2 sisters; 1 granddaughter; and 1 great granddaughter.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 2, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at Hughes-Taylor Funeral Home-Salem Chapel.  Visitation will be held Wednesday, March 2, from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home.  Burial to follow in Blue River Baptist Cemetery with full military honors.

Alice McGinnis, age 105, formerly of Salem

Alice McGinnis, age 105, formerly of Salem passed away, Saturday, February 26 at her home.

McGinnis was born July 24, 1916 in Little York, Indiana the daughter of William Wilson and Ada Davis Wilson. She was a 1933 graduate of Little York High School.

She was a homemaker for most of her life but worked for Bata Shoe Co. in Salem for 9 years.

She was a member of Salem Presbyterian Church, and Eastern Star Chapter 107 in Scottsburg for 87 years. She was a former member of Washington Co. Art Guild, Southside Homemakers Club, Friends of the Library, Blood Bank, a Tour Guide at the Stevens Museum of Art, and the Writer’s Bloc.

Alice also attended Brown Bag Supper nights at Presbyterian Church, played Hand and Foot several times a week and Dominos on Thursday evenings with friends.

In her 80’s she took a quilting class given by Dorothy Moss, a computer class and art classes though the adult education classes offered at Salem High School. She would later go on to complete a college course in Literature of Western World offered at the high school. Alice loved to paint, work daily crossword puzzles, write in her daily, journal and listen to Books on Tape.

She is preceded in death by her husband: Hobert McGinnis they were marred May 4, 1935. She is also preceded in death by five brothers: William, John, George, Gordon, and Fred Wilson, four sisters: Ellen Fleenor, Bessie Perry, Jean Mount, and Faye Pooler.

She is survived by her children: William McGinnis, and Mary Carter both of Indianapolis, three grandchildren: Bryan McGinnis, Andrew Carter, and Melinda Scheidt, three great-grandchildren: Richie McGinnis, Holli Scheidt, and William Scheidt, and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1PM Saturday, March 5 at Weathers Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Crown Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held Saturday from 11AM-until time of service at the funeral home.

Mary L. Powers, age 96 of Pekin

Mary L. Powers, age 96 of Pekin, passed away Saturday, February 26, 2022, in her residence.

Born March 4, 1925 in New York City, New York, she was the daughter of the late Harry Edward and Mary (Sekac) Latimer.

She was a homemaker, a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and had been a resident of Washington County for the past 72 years, formerly of New York City, New York.  She was a Girl Scouts of America and a 4-H leader.

She married Charles Everett Powers, who passed away February 3, 2004.

Survivors include:  2 Daughters: Betty Parker of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Peggy Powers of Salem;  2 Sons: Tom Powers of Siminole, Florida and Bill Powers of Pekin; 12 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild on the way.

She was preceded in death by: son Charles Powers, daughter Pam Landreth, 4 brothers and 1 sister.

Funeral Service: 11:00 am Thursday at St. Patrick Catholic Church.
  Visitation: 4 to 8 pm Wednesday at Dawalt Funeral Home.
      Interment at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery near Pekin.

Michael E. Ratts, age 70, of Salem

Michael E. Ratts, age 70, of Salem, passed away, Monday, February 28 at University of Louisville Hospital.

Mr. Ratts was born September 29, 1951 in Salem the son of Carl Eugene Ratts and Elizabeth Voyles Ratts. He was the owner of Salem Wrecker Service for 26 years. Mike was a 1970 Salem High School graduate.

He is survived by his wife: Brenda Dever Ratts they were married December 31, 1983. He is also survived by a son: Shaun Ratts of Salem, a daughter Kenna Howell of Salem, three brothers: Scott Ratts, Phillip Ratts, and Patrick Wright all of Salem, a sister: Diane Ratts of Salem, three grandchildren: Sterlen Keller, Joey Howell, and Jacob Howell, and seven great-grandchildren: Avary Keller, Benton Howell, Leighton Howell, Josiah Howell, Jeremiah Howell, Clayton Tincher, and Raelan Spears.

He is preceded in death by a sister: Connie Ratts and his parents.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, March 4 at Weathers Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Kansas Cemetery. Visitation will be held Thursday from 4PM-8PM and Friday from 9AM-until time of service at the funeral home.
