Gordon K. Trainor, 91, Bordon

0

Gordon K. Trainor, 91, died on Monday, June 13, at home with his family.

Born on September 17, 1930, in Borden, IN, he was the eldest child of Merle and Edna (Blackman) Trainor of New Providence (Borden), IN.

Survivors include his beloved wife, the former Bonnie June Callahan, whom he married on June 29, 1956, in Borden; a daughter, Amanda, of Indianapolis; IN, and a son, John, of New Pekin, IN. Three grandchildren also survive Stephen Barbera of Indianapolis, Chelsea, and Marisa Trainor of Texas. Two nephews and a niece; one first cousin; and one sister-in-law also survive as does an adopted Chinese-speaking member of the family, Shih “Buddy” Tzu.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his younger siblings—Gene W. Trainor; Patricia “Pat” M. Woodward; and Norman L. Trainor, Ed. D.

He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in November 1950 during the Korean War. Later, several security clearances were granted in March 1951, and he was transferred to a unique and fascinating branch of the U.S. Air Force—the Armed Forces Special Weapons Command (AFSWC)—which was a military arm of the Manhattan Project. His first duty station was in New Mexico at Sandia Base.

He was a retired civil works estimator/project manager at the Corps of Engineers, in Louisville, KY, for 32 years. In August 1958, he became a member of the Borden Lions Club and continued with his Lions International membership for over 60 years. He was a Charter Member of the old Borden Institute Historical Society and was a member of the American Legion, Post 203.

He also donated 99 pints of blood at various local Red Cross Centers until medical conditions curtailed that activity. He and others grew grain and forage on a farm in his family for over a century.

After two flood disasters occurred in 1961 on Muddy Fork Creek, he became a member of a steering committee that started working on the Muddy Fork persistent flooding problems in Clark County, IN. That work led to a Federal/State/local project that is now known as the Muddy Fork of Silver Creek Small Watershed Project. He also was a former Vice Chairman/Supervisor of the Clark County Soil and Water Conservation District.

He was a member of the Christian faith and occasionally dabbled in the muddy waters of genealogy—sieving away a few golden nuggets of data into modest 14,000-name family history.

While he and June were not globing travelers, they had driven somewhere in each of the 50 States—including Washington D.C.—and many of the Canadian Provinces including Hwy. 37 BC, the entire Alaska Highway, and the Fairbanks/Dawson City routes.

The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses, and others of the Baptist Health/Floyd Hospital staff for their medical and care services to him over the years and Hosparus of Southern Indiana for his final care.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 18, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at Hughes-Taylor Funeral Home-Borden Chapel.

Visitation will be held Friday, June 17, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home and on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home. Burial to be at the Walnut Hill Cemetery at Borden with Dr. Jeremy W. Goen officiating.

Arrangements: In lieu of flowers, he had asked that any monetized gifts be donated to the Friends of the Borden Community Park.

Adrian Spicer, 80, Formerly of Salem

0

On Saturday, June 4, 2022, the children of Adrian “Spice” Spicer laid his ashes to rest beneath the family gravestone in Crown Hill Cemetery following a short family-led ceremony. Later that evening, friends and family members enjoyed a Celebration of Life for Spice at the Irish Lion in Bloomington. In typical Spice fashion, waffles were enjoyed the next morning.

Spice was born August 13, 1940, in Madison, WI, the eldest of Delmar and Alice Spicer’s three sons. He lived most of his younger life in Salem, IN and attended Salem schools before transferring to finish High School from Culver Academy.

After graduating from Culver, Spice earned a bachelor’s degree in Business from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL.

During college, he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and continued his ROTC training before graduating and joining the U.S. Navy.

Spicer retired with the rank of Lieutenant and then returned to Salem to take over the family business, Salem Cheese and Milk Company, Inc.

Throughout his life, Spice loved sailing while on Lake Monroe or at Patoka Lake. He also enjoyed some occasional long stretches of boat life in and around the Bahamas and Virgin Islands.

Spice was also an avid snow skier, hitting the slopes whenever possible everywhere from Austria, France, and Germany to Aspen and Steamboat Springs, CO, and, of course, at Paoli Peaks.

After retiring from Salem Cheese in the mid-1980s, Spice kept busy and enjoyed life as a part-time bartender at Backroad’s in Salem, and also as a bookseller at Waldenbooks in Clarksville, IN.

Spice moved to Sun City Grand, AZ in 1997, where he was actively involved with the Sun City West Clay Club and Computer Club. His love of pottery and travel took him on group trips to Thailand, Peru, New Zealand, as well as several countries in Africa to experience other cultures’ traditions with clay.

In July, 2020, Spice fell victim to COVID-19, ultimately succumbing to the disease on August 18th, just a few days after his 80th birthday.

Spice is survived by his sons, Aaron Spicer of Salt Lake City, UT, Brent Spicer (Dana Daniels) of Boerne, TX, and their children Jillian and Ryan Spicer.

Spice also leaves behind his beloved step-daughter, Angela Sparkman (John Paul Sparkman), and their children Austin, Ryland, and Preston.

At the time of his death, Spice was also survived by his brother Dan Spicer.

Sadly, before his ashes could be formally interred, Dan, too, passed away in December, 2021.

Spice and Dan are both preceded in death by their parents, Delmar and Alice Spicer, along with their younger brother, Ted Spicer.

New closure date set for small structure replacements on S.R. 58 in Jackson and Lawrence Counties

0

Indiana Department of Transportation contractor Five Star Company plans to close sections of S.R. 58 starting on or after Monday, June 20, to complete a series of small structure replacements between S.R. 135 and S.R. 446 in Jackson and Lawrence Counties. The road was originally scheduled to close in early May, but was delayed due to utilities. State Road 58 will close for up to 30 days at each of the following locations:

  • Starting on/after Monday, June 20: S.R. 58, 13.37 miles E of S.R. 446 at unnamed tributary to South Fork Salt Creek, between C.R. 550 W. and C.R. 650 W. in Jackson County
  • Starting Late July: S.R. 58, 9.9 miles E of S.R. 446, between Pike Road and C.R. 980 W. in Jackson County
  • Starting Late August: S.R. 58, 1.39 miles E of S.R. 446 at unnamed tributary to Leatherwood Creek, between Fairview Mundell Road and S.R. 446 in Lawrence County

The $1 million contract was awarded to Five Star in February, with a completion date in late October. Traffic will be routed along the official detour, which follows S.R. 446, U.S. 50 and S.R. 135. Access will be maintained for local residents; thru traffic should use an alternate route.

INDOT reminds drivers to slow down, avoid distractions, and consider worker safety when traveling through active construction zones. All work is weather-dependent and schedules are subject to change.

INDOT to host public meeting June 30 for S.R. 11 Extension Project in southern Harrison County

0

In partnership with Lochmuller Group, the Indiana Department of Transportation will hold a second public information meeting for the State Road 11 Extension Project; a road construction project that will extend S.R. 11 from the intersection of S.R. 337, S.R. 11 and Melview Road, across Buck Creek, to the intersection of S.R. 135 and Watson Road in Harrison County.

The meeting will provide an opportunity for the public to interact with the project team and receive updates on project progress. The project includes improvements to existing roads using Watson Road and Melview Road, construction of new roadway, and a new bridge.

The project is nearly halfway through the two-year environmental studies process. This phase involves preliminary engineering and the assessment of environmental impacts in identifying the best alignment for the roadway. Final design and right-of-way acquisition will follow. Construction is estimated to begin in the fall of 2025.

The information meeting will take place at the following location:

South Harrison Community Center – Gymnasium
5101 Main Street SE, Elizabeth, IN 47117

Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. to allow the public to view displays and talk with project personnel prior to a presentation that will begin at 6 p.m. Project team members will be available to answer questions. Comment forms will also be provided.

S.R. 56 closure expands next week in Salem

0

Indiana Department of Transportation contractor Milestone Contractors LP plans to extend the current closure of S.R. 56 in Salem next week to continue work on a $13.2 million roadway reconstruction project that began in March.

On or after Monday, June 20, the S.R. 56 closure will extend further west, to begin at the intersection of Cauble Street and end at S.R. 135.

The current closure begins at Harrison Street.

The new closure will allow crews to reconstruct the roadway and complete drainage work under the pavement.

Crews are also active at the S.R. 56 bridge over Brock Creek, which is being replaced as part of the reconstruction project, in addition to the intersection of S.R. 135.

The intersection closed late last month for storm drain installation, and pavement and curb replacement.

The official detour continues to follow I-65 at Scottsburg (Exit 29) to S.R. 250 at Uniontown (Exit 41). State Road 135 is currently expected to reopen at S.R. 56 in late June.

The contract was awarded to Milestone last December for a total of $13,292,500.

Drivers are reminded to slow down, use extra caution, and drive distraction-free in and near construction zones.

All work is weather-dependent and schedules are subject to change.
