Salem Draws Bye, Eastern and WW start Sectionals Feb. 1

WSLM broadcast the 47th Annual IHSAA Girls Basketball State Tournament Sunday afternoon.

Sectional games are scheduled to begin Tuesday, Feb. 1, and run through Saturday, Feb. 5, with the regional round slated for Feb. 12 and semi-states on Feb. 19.

The four state championship games that make up the state finals will be played at the newly-renovated and renamed Gainbridge Fieldhouse in downtown Indianapolis on Saturday, Feb. 26 and broadcast on WSLM.

Top-ranked Homestead will meet the winner of the New Haven-Columbia City game in the semifinals of Sectional 6 at Huntington North.

The Spartans are the No. 1 team in both the 4A poll of the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association (ICGSA) and the single class poll from the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA).

In Class 3A, the No. 1-ranked South Bend Washington Panthers will host Jimtown for its first-round game in Sectional 19.

The Class 2A poll shows the South Central Satellites of Union Mills leading the field and scheduled to face North Judson-San Pierre in the eight-team Sectional 34 at Rensselaer Central.

And in Class A, the Waldron Mohawks top the latest poll and are scheduled to host the Rising Sun-Oldenburg winner in the Sectional 60 semifinal round.

Dorothy Lee Moore, 93, of Paoli

Dorothy Lee Moore, 93, of Paoli Indiana, passed away on Thursday, January 20, 2022, at IU Health, Paoli. She was born on January 22, 1928, in Paoli, Indiana to John and Margaret Sanders Kimmel.

Dorothy married John Henry Moore on December 26, 1944, and he preceded her in death.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son, Thomas Moore, daughters, Mary Lee Jones and Peggy Jane Blevins, and brothers, John, Charles, and James Kimmel, and Alfred “Doc” Moore

She was a member of the Paoli First Baptist Church. Dorothy formerly worked as a Certified Nurse Aid in Home Health Care. She enjoyed dancing, going to yard sales, and spending time with family.

Survivors include:

Son: James “Bud” (Debbie) Moore, Jasper, Indiana; Timothy (Deborah) Moore, Mitchell, Indiana

Daughters: Veronica (Jerry) Mathis, Russellville, Arkansas; Nancy Louise Spencer, Mitchell, Indiana

20-Grandchildren, 49-Great-Grandchildren, and 20-Great-Great Grandchildren also survive Dorothy Lee Moore.

Cremation was chosen.

Memorial services will be 1:00 PM, Friday, January 28, 2022.

Visitation will be from 11:00 AM-1:00 PM, and from 9:00 AM until time of service on Friday.

Matthew S. Cain, 47, of Grantsburg, Indiana died on January 18, 2022 at Memorial Hospital and Health Services in Jasper, Indiana.  He was born on May 2, 1974 in Evansville, Indiana to the late Gary Steven Cain and Cruz  D. (Salazar) Howard.

He was a former manager for the Grease Monkey in Evansville, Indiana.  He was a member of the AMVETS Post #84 in Evansville, Indiana.

Matthew is survived by his wife of 24 years, Gina P. Cain of Grantsburg, Indiana; sons:  Corey J. Cain of Evansville, Indiana and Blake P. Cain of Grantsburg, Indiana; a daughter, Dana M. Cain of Evansville, Indiana; brother, Jason Cain of Evansville, Indiana; sister, Rachel R. Wilson (Josh) of Evansville, Indiana; grandchildren:  Aaliyah N. Cain, Asher E. Cain, and Apollo C. Morse; niece and nephew:  Paisley N. Cain and Lakota C. Trotter; mother in law and father in law:  Kathy Griffith (Marty); grandmother, Alice Myers; aunt:  Ellen Myers and his childhood friend, Jeff Elpers.

Matthew was preceded in death by his parents; nephew:  Logan S. Cain; and grandparents:  Emma & Victor, Anna Jean and Jackson, and Paul “Pappy.”

A celebration of life will be on Saturday, February 5, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at the Fairview General Baptist Church near Taswell, Indiana.  

Pastor Kim Allen will officiate the service.

Brown Funeral Home in Milltown, Indiana is entrusted with the arrangements.

Shawn Edward Schuppert, age 57, of Salem

Shawn Edward Schuppert, age 57, of Salem, passed away Thursday, January 20, 2022 at Baptist Health Floyd Hospital.  Born October 11, 1964 in New Albany, he was the son of Gerald Schuppert who survives and the late Sandra Kay (LaDuke) Schuppert.

Shawn was lead press operator with V.G. Reed & Sons in Louisville; he was an avid animal lover and loved the outdoors.

He is survived by his daughter, Shawna Schuppert; his father, Gerald Schuppert; his fiancee, Lisa R. Jewell; step-children, Jesse Jewell and Sonya Matheny; and 2 step-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Sandra Schuppert.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 26, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at Hughes-Taylor Funeral Home-Salem Chapel with Michael Schwartz officiating.  Visitation will be held Tuesday, January 25, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home and on Wednesday, January 26, from noon until time of service at the funeral home.  Burial to follow in Beech Grove Cemetery.

Clark “Tim” Timothy Murphy, age 66

Clark “Tim” Timothy Murphy, age 66, of Paoli, passed away Thursday, January 20 at The Waters of Scottsburg.

Mr. Murphy was born September 18, 1955, in Clark County, Indiana the son of Clark T. Murphy and Ersa A. Armstrong Murphy. He was employed as a truck driver at Scott Daughtery Trucking.

He is survived by a son: Ian Murphy of Hanover, IN, a daughter: Siobhon T. Murphy of Cocoa Beach, FL, a brother: Kent S. Murphy of Atlanta, GA, two sisters: Peggy Lundy of Dallas, TX, and Kyle Murphy of Pasadena, CA, and four grandchildren: Chloe Murphy, Jadie Blair, Jeffrey Blair, and Eli Blair. He is preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial gathering will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 P.M. Tuesday, January 25 at Weathers Funeral Home.

Christopher “Chris” William Cheatham, age 54

Christopher “Chris” William Cheatham, age 54, of Salem, passed away Thursday, January 20 at St. Vincent Hospital in Salem.

Chris was born May 5, 1967, in Salem, Indiana the son of William “Bill” Cheatham and Paula Stewart Cheatham. 

He is survived by his children:  Jordan Cheatham of Salem, Deaven Cheatham of Salem, and Ciera Wagers (Sean) of Salem, his parents:  William “Bill” and Paula Cheatham of Salem, his partner:  Laura Buchanan of Salem, a brother:  Jason Cheatham (Becca) of Henryville, a sister:  Ali Martin (Chris) of Salem, three grandchildren:  Aiden, Samuel and Aurora Wagers, and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. 

He was preceded in death by a brother:  William Ross Cheatham and a sister:  Christina Cheatham.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1PM at Weathers Funeral Home with Tom Fultz officiating. 

Burial will follow in Crown Hill Cemetery.  Visitation will be Tuesday from 10AM-time of services.

Police Looking for Missing Salem Teen

Salem Police are looking for a missing Salem juvenile.

According to Sgt. James Moore, a 16-year-old female has been missing since January 13.

Her name is Harlee Stivers. 

Moore said she has red hair, is approximately 5-foot, 5-inches tall and weighs approximately 120 pounds and she has red hair and has brown eyes. 

Moore said she was last seen at her residence in Salem on January 13th
