Doris Gayle Ackerman, age 85, of Salem

Doris Gayle Ackerman, age 85, of Salem, passed away Wednesday, November 24 at Paoli Health and Living.

Mrs. Ackerman was born September 1, 1936, in Crawford County, Indiana the daughter of Kermit May and Lorraine Hilgert Martin. She retired from Tecumseh after 27 years.

Doris was preceded in death by her husband:  Roy Ackerman Jr., a granddaughter:  Nikki Bell Collins, a grandson:  Shane Buis, and her parents.

She is survived by a son:  Bill Ackerman (Penny) of Salem, two daughters:  Diane Young of Salem and Karen Bell (Dom) of Hernando, Florida, four grandchildren:  Dominic Bell IV, Kendra Richert, Derek Richert (Erica), and Jeremy Buis, eleven great-grandchildren:  Griffin Collins (Sophie), Oakley Collins, Mia Collins, Cruz Collins, Evelyn Richert, Marshall Richert, Karlie Buis, Jeffrey Buis, Ava Bell, Dominic Bell V, and Ellie Day Buis, and one great-great-grandchild:  Oaklynn Bishop.

Private burial was held in Saltillo Cemetery. Memorial donations can be made to the Humane Society of Washington County at 204 W. Joseph St. Salem IN 47167.

Jeffersonville Business Owner arrested on Racketeering and Theft Charges

A Jeffersonville Bar owner was arrested Wednesday on several felony charges after a year-long investigation. 

William Longwell, 59, the owner and operator of “Johnny D’s” was arrested and charged with the following:

  1.  Corrupt Business Influence (Racketeering) – Level 5 Felony 
  2. Theft (four counts)- Level 6 Felony
  3. Failure to Remit Indiana Sales Tax (four counts) -Level 6 Felony
  4. Tax Evasion – Level 6 Felony
  5. Perjury – Level 6 Felony  

In October of 2020, Detective Tim Denby, with the Indiana State Police Special Investigations Section, was contacted by the Indiana Department of Revenue about possible illegal activities by the owner and operator of Johnny D’s Bar on East Maple Street in Jeffersonville.

The information stemmed from alleged under-reported income and underpaid taxes over multiple years by the establishment.  

As a result of the investigation, Detective Denby requested, and was granted, an arrest warrant for Longwell was issued.

Longwell was arrested without incident Wednesday afternoon and taken to the Clark County Jail.  

Detective Denby was assisted by investigators with the Indiana Department of Revenue and the Indiana Excise Police.

Eleanor Ione Morgan age 80 of Salem

Eleanor Ione Morgan age 80 of Salem, Indiana passed away Saturday
November 20, 2021, at the U of L Hospital-Jewish Campus.

Born November 24, 1940, in Salem, Indiana, she was the daughter of the
late Charles S. Altemeyer and Hazel I. (True) Altemeyer. She was a
homemaker, a member of the old West Point United Methodist Church, and a
1958 graduate of Salem High School. She was a member of Big Brothers Big
Sisters, Washington County Relay For Life, Washington County Awareness,
and the Washington County Tourism committee. With her husband, Vaughn,
she also volunteered at West Baden and French Lick during the
restoration of those properties.

On February 25th, 1962, she married her high school sweetheart, Vaughn E.
Morgan. Until his death in August 2010, they were devoted to one another
and rarely apart. Eleanor followed Vaughn to Indianapolis, IN,
Pittsburgh, PA, Fountain Valley, CA, Redmond, WA, and Alexandria VA,
during the course of their marriage, but she always considered
Washington County home.

She was a wonderful mother to her two daughters, Holly Morgan (Jonathan
Brendle), and Julie Morgan-Bilyou (Jeff Bilyou). Survivors also include
one grandchild, one brother, Donald Altemeyer of Indianapolis, and one
sister, Helen Morgan of Salem. She was preceded in death by one brother,
Stanley Altemeyer.

Funeral service: 11:00 AM Wednesday, November 24th at Dawalt Funeral
home followed by interment at Franklin Cemetery.
Visitation: 5:00-8:00 PM Tuesday, and 10:00 AM until the time of the
service on Wednesday.

The family requests that masks be worn for the visitation and service.
