Lanham Sentenced in Church Burglary Case

0

A Salem man was sentenced Wednesday on felony burglary charges after police say he broke into a downtown church and stole several items, at least one of which he later pawned.

James Walter Lanham, 34, 200 block of Marshall Ave., was charged with burglary, a Level 5 felony, in connection with the January crime, said Washington County Prosecutor Dustin Houchin.

Yesterday Judge Larry Medlock sentenced Lanham to 10 and ½ years in the Indiana Department of Correction for the crime under an open plea agreement.

When Pastor Jason Bontrager arrived at Legacy Life Church, located on West Walnut Street, the morning of Jan. 24, he found the building had been broken into.

The assailant broke out a glass window on the west side of the church and entered, according to Bontrager.

Once inside, the assailant broke into a safe, kicked in an office door, and pilfered through items inside, stealing some things, according to the probable cause affidavit.

Among the items stolen were two iPads, a Fender guitar, Audio Tech headphones, two iPhones (both with cracked screens), a laptop computer, a wooden Takamine G Series guitar, a book of checks from Mid-Southern Savings Bank along with a debit card from that bank and a Capital One credit card in the church’s name.

Through their investigation, Salem City Police were able to determine that one of the guitars had been pawned in Louisville.

The person who listed the guitar was James Lanham and a driver’s license number for him was provided to shop personnel.

When police reviewed surveillance camera footage from Mid-Southern Savings Bank, they saw an individual using the Legacy Life debit card and withdrawing $320.

The person in the photos matched the BMV photo of Lanham. When interviewed by police about the incident, Lanham denied committing the crimes.

Lanham said on the night of Jan. 23 to early Jan. 24 he was driving around with his cousin.

He said the two parked at the Salem Public Library and that he stayed in the truck while his cousin left on foot.

Lanham admitted to pawning the guitar and using the debit card but said it was his cousin who asked him to do so.

When asked where the other items were, Lanham said they were at a building in Pekin.

He told police he had tried to help his cousin log onto one of the iPads.

The PC affidavit notes the police officer had never mentioned an iPad during the interview.

When library camera footage from the night of Jan. 23 was reviewed, police saw a male getting out of a Dodge Dakota that belonged to Lanham’s mother.

The male then walked away from the library and later returned.

There was only one male in the surveillance video, not two as Lanham had stated.

Legacy Life Church is located about a block from the library.

“I want to thank officer Chad Webb and the law enforcement officers that worked this case. Their excellent police work helped to sort out the facts of the case leading to the charges and sentence today,” said Prosecutor Dustin Houchin.

Lanham will serve the full sentence at the Indiana Department of Correction.

INDOT to host public information meeting for S.R. 45/46 access improvement project in Bloomington

Doors open at 6 p.m., presentation at 6:15 p.m. at North Central Church of Christ

In partnership with American Structurepoint, Inc., the Indiana Department of Transportation will host a public information meeting for an access improvement project on S.R. 45/46 in Bloomington on Monday, July 19, at North Central Church of Christ (2121 N. Dunn Street, Bloomington, IN). The meeting will provide an opportunity for the public to learn more about the project, ask questions, and provide comments to the project team.

As proposed, the project includes access modifications along S.R. 45/46 between Arlington Road and Walnut Street, specifically at the Monroe Street and Stonelake Drive intersections, as well as a new ramp at the Arlington Road overpass. The purpose of the project is to improve local connectivity and reduce crash frequency and left-turn congestion on minor roads in the area. Construction would be completed under lane closures and restrictions on S.R. 45/46 with an estimated start in the winter of 2023.

Doors will open at 6 p.m. to allow the public to view displays and talk with project personnel prior to the meeting. A formal presentation will begin at 6:15 p.m. A video presentation will also be posted on the project website prior to July 19 and can be viewed at any time.

Comments may be submitted in-person at the information meeting, via the online comment form, also on the project website, or in writing to Kaitlyn Walker with American Structurepoint (kawalker@structurepoint.com). All comments are requested by August 19, 2021.

Project documents, including exhibits and the proposed project schedule, are also available online.

Face coverings and social distancing will be encouraged at the meeting. Hand-sanitization stations and handwashing facilities will be available.

Holiday World to Provide Indiana Foster Kids Free Admission

0

Kentucky and Indiana children in foster care will now be able to visit Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari once a year for free. Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari has partnered with foster care agencies in Kentucky, Indiana, and Tennessee to create a new Foster Family Program.

Effective immediately, every child in foster care from participating states is eligible to visit Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari once per year at no cost.

“We are so grateful to Holiday World for recognizing foster families with this benefit,” Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said. “The amazing foster parents I’ve met say their biggest reward is helping children and their families heal and reunite, but benefits like this give them an invitation to the summertime fun and adventure that every child deserves. What a great way to say thank you to these dedicated parents for all they do.”

In addition to free admission for children in foster care, resource parents and those in their households are eligible for discounted tickets through Holiday World’s Online Fun Club.

Matt Eckert, Holiday World President & CEO said, “We can’t think of a better way to celebrate 75 Years of Fun than rolling out the Foster Family Program to share the fun with as many families as possible.”

Children in foster care are required to be accompanied by a licensed or unlicensed resource parent. To receive free admission, a resource parent should contact their representative to receive a completed referral.

The resource parent should then present the referral along with a valid photo ID at a Holiday World Guest Relations window to receive tickets for the eligible children.

More information about this new program can be found with the foster care agencies in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Indiana or HolidayWorld.com by searching the words “Foster Family Program.”

Guests with additional questions are encouraged to call the Holiday World Call Center at (812)937-4401 or email us at fun@holidayworld.com.

If agencies in additional states are interested in partnering with Holiday World, please send inquiries to fun@holidayworld.com
