S.R. 37 to close in Martinsville starting Jan. 2 for faster, safer I-69 construction

Nearly 5 miles of State Road 37 in Martinsville is scheduled to close between S.R. 39 and Morgan Street starting this Saturday, Jan. 2.

Expected to last most of 2021, the closure will allow crews to work faster and safer on I-69 Finish Line construction through Martinsville. Removing live traffic from the construction zone creates a safer environment for motorists and workers. Crews can also work faster. The full closure will allow work to be completed a full year faster than trying to maintain limited access through the work zone.

The official detour for north-south state highway traffic follows S.R. 39, S.R. 67 and S.R. 144. Long-distance traffic is encouraged to avoid the construction altogether and use alternate routes including I-65, S.R. 135 and I-70.

Several east-west roads will remain open throughout the closure to provide local access across S.R. 37. Local traffic in Morgan County is encouraged to make hands-free use of mapping apps that include real-time traffic.

What to Expect
Weather permitting, closure activity is scheduled to start with S.R. 37 southbound the morning of Saturday, Jan. 2. Law enforcement officers will direct traffic while crews change and uncover signs and install barricades. Work will continue non-stop until both directions of S.R. 37 are closed, which is anticipated to be in effect by late Saturday afternoon.

Coming into Martinsville, northbound S.R. 37 traffic will be shifted to new pavement and continue straight onto S.R. 39/Morton Avenue. The existing S.R. 37 northbound ramps at S.R. 39 will be closed for reconstruction.
Temporary State Road 44 connectionOnce S.R. 37 is closed to north-south traffic, Martinsville roads remaining open across the work zone will be restriped and the traffic signals will be removed. A portion of the existing S.R. 37 pavement will be used to provide a temporary connection for S.R. 44 to S.R. 252/Hospital Drive. During this first phase of construction, Reuben Drive will be closed west of S.R. 37 for interchange construction.

202 Get Tested at Free Covid-19 Clinic at Fairgrounds

According to the Indiana State Department of Health, there were 202 people tested for Covid-19 at the Washington County Fairgrounds site from Dec. 22-26.

Washington County is currently designated as a “Red” county with the highest rate of spread of the coronavirus. 

The site was closed Friday for the Christmas holiday. 

This was the only free testing site held in Washington County since the pandemic began earlier this year. 

The ISDH said it didn’t know if future testing clinics would be held. 

ISDH statistics show there have been 7,249 people tested in Washington County since March. 

Of that total, 1,375 have been tested so far in December. 

As of Saturday, there have been 1372 Cases and 15 deaths since March. 

There are two medical facilities with testing capabilities in Washington County, along with the local hospital. Two pharmacies have been testing for Covid as well – all for a fee. 

However, the only free sites for Covid testing are in Lawrence, Scott, Harrison, Jennings, Clark, Floyd, and Jackson Counties.

Residents in Washington County and Orange County have had to go outside the county to get tested for free. 

 

Marijane Applegate Crofford, age 59, of Jeffersonville

Marijane Applegate Crofford, age 59, of Jeffersonville, passed away Thursday, December 24 at Schneck Medical Center in Seymour.

Marijane was born June 5, 1961 in Salem the daughter of Glen and Patricia Beasley Applegate. 

She was preceded in death by her husband:  Randy Crofford, her parents: Glen and Pat Applegate, a brother:  Jim Applegate and a grandson:  Jacob Fleenor.

She is survived by her son:  Dustin Fleenor (Kristi) of Pekin, a brother:  Scott Applegate (Kim) of Pekin, and one grandson:  Hunter Fleenor of Pekin.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 7PM at Westview Christian Church.  Visitation will be Saturday, concurrently with her brother and mother, from 9AM-time of service at Westview Christian Church. 

Due to restrictions only 25 people will be allowed for visitation at one time and masks must be worn at all times.

State has been under reporting COVID-19 positivity rate due to computational error

Indiana health officials have erred in reporting the state’s COVID-19 positivity rate since the beginning of the pandemic due to a problem with the way it was computed, resulting in a lower rate than would be accurate.

Dr. Kristina Box, Indiana health commissioner, said Tuesday that she believed that the reported 7-day positivity rate for the state has consistently been two to three percentage points lower than it should have been.

On Tuesday, state health officials reported that the state’s 7-day positivity rate was 12.2% for all tests and 24.2% for unique individuals.

“The error we discovered is in the software logic coding used to calculate our positivity rate. The error has existed since we began reporting the data,” Box said during Gov. Eric Holcomb’s weekly press conference on the pandemic. “We’ve been working with outside data scientists to identify the issue and to develop a fix.”

Next week, the state plans to correct the state’s 7-day and all-time positivity rate, as well as the methodology for calculating the 7-day positivity rate for counties.

However, other statistics related to the pandemic reported by the state — including the number of cases per 100,000 individuals, the number of deaths, and the overall test counts — have not been affected, Box said.

Holcomb emphasized that the movement trends in the positivity rate throughout the pandemic closely mirrored the accurate numbers, and thus officials wouldn’t have made any different decisions.

CITY OF SALEM REMINDS RESIDENTS TO AVOID FLUSHING MASKS

The City of Salem would like to remind residents not to flush masks, paper towels, disinfecting or flushable wipes of any type down the toilet. 

Flushing these items causes stress on the wastewater treatment facility.

“We want to keep our City safe and healthy, and one way we can ensure this happens is by keeping our wastewater plant running efficiently by remembering to only flush toilet paper,” said Mayor Justin Green. 

Due to a continued increase in the volume of harmful items that can cause issues with the city’s wastewater treatment operations, Green recently made the following notice available from Wastewater Superintendent, Troy Watts:

“We are seeing an uptick of problems at the wastewater treatment plant due to discarded masks and wipes being flushed. Please remember sewer systems can get clogged when improper items are put down the drain or flushed. This can cause backups and overflow at our treatment facilities, which can create additional public health concerns. It is also advisable to refrain from flushing paper towels or wipes labeled as “flushable” or “septic-safe” as some wipes with this label can still cause issues with wastewater systems,” said Superintendent Watts.

Mayor Green and Watts remind residents never to flush masks, even those made of paper, and that flushable wipes must have 3 main qualities:

  1. They must break down quickly into small pieces,
    2. They should not be buoyant or float,
    3. They should only be made of ingredients that will easily and naturally degrade.

Green and Watts ask for your help in keeping the system operating and functioning well, particularly during this time. 

“Please be mindful that used masks, disinfecting, and other wipes, including paper towels and baby wipes, should only be placed in the trash,” said Green.

Nicky Donovan Warren, age 53, of Salem

Nicky Donovan Warren, age 53, of Salem, passed away Sunday, December 20, 2020.  Born November 29, 1967, in Salem, he was the son of the late Jack Copeland and Marilyn Copeland (Bogard).

He was a transportation specialist at Amazon.

Nicky is survived by 4 children: Shana Warren, Casey Donovan Warren, Sara Munnerlyn, and Cyanne Warren; 2 brothers: Josh Copeland and Jordan Copeland; and 4 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and 1 brother, Jason Copeland.

Cremation was chosen with a memorial service to be held at a later date. Hughes-Taylor Funeral Home was entrusted with arrangements.

Dale K. Bailey, age 73, of Sellersburg

Dale K. Bailey, age 73, of Sellersburg, Indiana passed away Saturday, December 19, 2020 at Clark Memorial Hospital.  Born January 25, 1947 in Borden, Indiana, he was the son of the late Charles Frederick Bailey and Olive (Peyton) Bailey.

Dale was retired from Jeff Boat where he worked as a tradesman; he was Church of Christ by faith; and was a member of Teamsters Local 89.

He is survived by his wife, Rebecca (Stewart) Bailey; 1 daughter: Lana Baxter (Hoyt); 1 son: Brian Dale Bailey (April); 4 grandchildren; and 3 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 1 brother; and 2 sisters.

The funeral service will be private with burial to follow in Crown Hill Cemetery.  Hughes-Taylor Funeral Home was entrusted with arrangements.

Patricia J. Applegate, age 83, of Pekin

Patricia J. Applegate, age 83, of Pekin, passed away Monday, December 21, 2020, at Baptist Health Floyd.

Mrs. Applegate was born December 9, 1937, in Henryville, Indiana the daughter of Dude and Dorothy Tabor Beasley. 

She was a member of the Douglas Church of Christ. 

She was a former employee of Morgan’s White Kitchen and Indian’s Theatre and she worked for the Federal Government and retired after 27 years.  

Pat was a graduate of Salem High School Class of 1955 and Sunset School of Missions in 1972.

Pat married Glen Applegate on August 28, 1958, and he preceded her in death on April 13, 2011.  

She was also preceded in death by her parents, her son:  Jim Applegate, her son-in-law, and a great-grandson:  Jacob Fleenor.

Pat is survived by a son:  Scott Applegate (Kim) of Pekin, her daughter:  Marijane Crofford of Jeffersonville, daughter-in-law:  Ann Applegate of Palmyra, a sister:  Diana Givans of New Albany, a brother:  Bobby Beasley (Martha) of Salem, eight grandchildren:  Dustin (Kristi) Fleenor, Nicholas (Mariah) Applegate, Kori Jo Applegate, Kentrell Applegate (Alex), Samantha Applegate, Andrew Applegate, Keenan Shanks, six great-grandchildren:  Hunter Fleenor, Glen Applegate, Hansley Applegate, Kane Shanks, Harrison Applegate, and Ruger Woods.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at Westview Christian Church at 7 PM with Johnny Beasley officiating. 

Visitation will be concurrent with her son, Jim, at Westview Christian Church from 9 AM until the time of service. 

Burial will be private in Olive Branch Cemetery. 

The services will be live-streamed on the Westview Christian Church Facebook page.  

Masks are required and only 50 people will be allowed in the building for visitation at one time.

Kelly Gene Wright Sr., 53, of Paoli

Kelly Gene Wright Sr., 53, of Paoli, Indiana, passed away on Monday, December 21, 2020 at IU Health Methodist in Indianapolis, Indiana.  

He was born on August 2, 1967 in Paoli, Indiana to James Wright Sr. and Nancy Slayton Wright.  

Kelly was preceded in death by his mother.

He was a self-employed electrician for Wrights Heating & Cooling. Kelly was also a plumber. He enjoyed auctions and flea markets and spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include:

Father: James Wright Sr. , Paoli, Indiana

Son: Kelly Wright Jr. Dubois, Indiana

Daughter: Casandra Wright French Lick, Indiana

Brothers: Jimmy (Beth) Wright Paoli, Indiana

Brian (Susan) Wright Paoli, Indiana

Tracy Wright Paoli, Indiana

2-Grandchildren; Brinley Emmons and Korbin Baglan also survive; Kelly Wright Sr.

Visitation will be held from 10:00-2:00 Saturday, December 26, 2020 with a private funeral service to follow at the Dillman-Scott Funeral Home located at 226 W. Campbell St. Paoli, IN 47454.

Interment will follow in the Mt. Gilead Cemetery in Paoli.

Due to the Corona Virus Pandemic, guests are required to wear a mask and practice social distancing.
