A multi-vehicle crash on I-65 Southbound near the 54 mile marker in Jackson County claimed the life of three people in two separate vehicles and shut down traffic for several hours.
The southbound lanes of I-65 were closed near the 54 mile marker for approximately eleven hours for crash investigation and cleanup.
During the cleanup, traffic was detoured off of I-65 at exit 64 to State Road 11 and US 31.
The initial investigation by Trp. Matt Holley, Indiana State Police-Versailles Crash Reconstruction Team indicated that I-65 Southbound was slow in the area due to a highway maintenance crew performing repairs to the southbound lanes.
A 2015 Freightliner hauling a box trailer, being driven by Cameron R. Haskett, age 28, Halethrope, Maryland had slowed in the left lane due to the slowed traffic.
A 2009 GMC Sierra being driven by John W. Mumma, age 67, Philo, Illinois had slowed behind Haskett’s vehicle.
A recreational vehicle (motorhome) being driven by Glenn E. Cardelli, age 57, Minocqua, Wisconsin had slowed behind Mumma’s vehicle.
A tractor trailer (unknown year/make), being driven by Roger E. Woody, age 46, Mooresboro, North Carolina was traveling in the left lane, approaching the slowed traffic.
Woody failed to slow his vehicle for the stopped traffic in front of his vehicle.
His vehicle collided with the rear of Cardelli’s vehicle. This cause a chain reaction, pushing Cardelli’s RV into the back of Mumma’s vehicle. Mumma’s vehicle was then pushed into the rear of Haskett’s trailer.
Woody’s vehicle also collided with a tractor trailer (unknown year/make) being driven by Anatoliy M. Petrov, age 43, Park Ridge, Illinois that was traveling in the right lane of I-65 Southbound.
As a result of the collision, Glenn Cardelli, his wife Kathryn L. Cardelli, age 57, Minocqua, Wisconsin, and John Mumma were all killed in the crash. None of the other participants were injured.
Due to the crash, the vehicles caught fire in the middle of the southbound lanes of I-65.
The Mumma and Cardelli families have been notified.
The crash remains under investigation. Toxicology results are pending at this time.
The Indiana State Police was assisted by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, Seymour Police Department, Seymour Fire Department, Jackson-Washington Township Fire Department, Hamilton Township Fire Department, Redding Township Fire Department, Jackson County EMS, Jackson County Coroner’s Office, and 31 Wrecker Service.
Police rescued two women from high water this morning near Little York with one being sent to Louisville by helicopter ambulance for hypothermia.
According to police, at approximately 10:30pm Tuesday, Feb.12 Sara Smith, 35, of Salem and Holly Chastain, 34, Salem drove down Spurgeon School Rd. east of Mt. Eden Rd. to check the high water in the area.
The vehicle got stuck in high water and the females decided to stay in vehicle overnight since they did not have a cell phone to call for help.
When morning came, the two females got out of the vehicle to walk to get help, according to Washington County Deputy Ryan Larrimore.
Smith made it to a nearby house to call 911.
At approximately 9am Washington County 911 received a phone call from Smith that she had driven into high water and her Chastain
was still near the car in deep water.
