At a press conference at 11:00 a.m. tomorrow in the field level interview room at Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati Reds Chief Executive Officer Bob Castellini and President of Baseball Operations Dick Williams will introduce Cincinnati native David Bell as the club’s new field manager.

Bell, 46, has agreed to a 3-year contract through the 2021 season, with a club option for 2022, to become the 63rd field manager in club history and the 53rd since 1900.

Bell and his father, former infielder and current Reds front office executive Buddy, will become the fourth father-son duo to serve as Major League managers, joining George & Dick Sisler, Bob & Joel Skinner and Bob & Aaron Boone. Buddy Bell managed the Detroit Tigers (1996-1998), Colorado Rockies (2000-2002) and Kansas City Royals (2005-2007).

David Bell spent last season as Vice President of Player Development for the San Francisco Giants following 4 years on the Major League coaching staff of the St. Louis Cardinals. He spent the 2014 season as Cardinals assistant hitting coach and his last 3 years there as manager Mike Matheny’s bench coach.

Bell also has experience as a third base coach, with the Chicago Cubs in 2013. He went to Chicago after 4 years managing in the Reds’ player development system, from 2009-2011 at Class AA Carolina and in 2012 at Class AAA Louisville. Following the 2009 campaign, he managed the Peoria Saguaros of the prestigious Arizona Fall League.

The former infielder was selected by the Indians in the seventh round of the June 1990 free agent draft and made his Major League debut in 1995. He played parts of 12 seasons in the Major Leagues with the Cleveland Indians, Cardinals, Seattle Mariners, Giants, Philadelphia Phillies and Milwaukee Brewers.

Bell played in 35 Postseason games, reaching the American League Championship Series with Seattle in both 2000 and 2001 before playing in the World Series with the Giants in 2002, when he received the Willie McCovey Award as the Giants’ most inspirational player.

The Bells are one of Major League Baseball’s five 3-generation families, along with the Boones, Colemans, Hairstons and Schofield/Werths. Reds Hall of Famer Gus Bell is Buddy’s father and David’s grandfather. David’s brothers, Mike and Rick, also played professional baseball. Mike made 19 appearances for the Reds in 2000.

Bell was born in and grew up in Cincinnati. He helped lead Moeller High School to the 1989 state baseball championship.

Clark County Man Pleads Guilty to Unemployment Insurance Fraud

0

Sellersburg resident Dwayne Loney, 40, pled guilty to unemployment insurance fraud in Clark County Circuit Court 3 on Aug. 16, 2018. Through the use of agency records, an Indiana Department of Workforce Development (DWD) employee began an investigation and determined that Loney was working and receiving wages while claiming unemployment insurance benefits.

Loney was sentenced to one year of HIP (Home Incarceration Program) and one and a half years of probation. He also was ordered to repay DWD $10,069 for the benefits he fraudulently collected.

DWD receives wage reports and new hire data from Hoosier employers documenting who is employed and receiving compensation. The agency uses this information to ensure people are not collecting unemployment insurance benefits while working.

Since 2013, Indiana courts have ordered fraudsters to repay millions in restitution to the state’s Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund. “Combatting fraud preserves employer-paid monies in the trust fund for those individuals whom are truly in need of unemployment insurance benefits,” said Regina Ashley, DWD, Chief Unemployment Insurance and Workforce Solutions Officer.

0

The third annual Great Pumpkin Walk and Carving Contest will be held Saturday, October 27th, from 5-9p.

This year the walk will be around the Salem Public Square in conjunction with the Parks and Recreation Trick or Treating at the Stevens Museum and the Halloween Parade sponsored by Turtlefish Clothing Co. and Angie Wilson, “Queen of Taxes”

Washington County Tourism will furnish real pumpkins or participants can provide their own. Pick up pumpkins at the YMCA parking lot on Wednesday, October 24 th after 3:00 pm, Thursday and Friday until 6:00 pm.

Entry for the contest will be held on Saturday, October 27 th from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm at the Purlee Plaza, located on the corner of South High Street and E. Market Street. You may enter as many pumpkins as desired.

There are three categories: Painted, Carved, Other (artificial, gourds, etc.)

What follows are the guidelines for participation. Please be sure to read all guidelines.

Understandably, very young children shouldn’t be using sharp knives to carve pumpkins so painting is suggested. A parent may help with the carving, but please allow the design to be the child’s own to make it fair to all contestants.

We will display pre-school entries but they will not be judged. Each pre-school participant will receive a certificate.

Elementary… 2 divisions: Kindergarten through second grade and third through fifth in carved and painted pumpkins. Prizes for these categories are $50 for the winners.

Middle School…The categories for middle school (Grades 6-8) include carved and painted pumpkins. Prizes for these categories are $75 to the winners.

High School…High school categories include carved pumpkins, painted pumpkins, artificial pumpkin carving and alternative carving such as gourdes. Prizes for these categories are $100 to the winners.

Adults…Adult categories include carved pumpkins, artificial pumpkin carving, painted pumpkins and gourde carving. Prizes for these categories are $150 to the winners.

Note: Entered pumpkins can be picked up by the participant after the event at 9:00 pm.
