Lynn R. Rutherford, age 67 of Salem

Lynn R. Rutherford, age 67 of Salem, passed away on Monday, November 11, 2024, at Salem Crossing.

Lynn was born February 21, 1957, in Salem, the son of Robert Howard Rutherford and Mary Frances Owsley Rutherford. He was a member of the Lost River Missionary Baptist Church.

He was also a member of the Eastern Star and was a 50-year member of the Campbellsburg Masonic Lodge. 

Mr. Rutherford is survived by his brother, Larry Scott Rutherford (Debbie) of Pekin and his two sisters, Karen Robbins (Jerry) of Salem and Jarita Spaulding (Larry) of Salem. He is also survived by 10 nieces and nephews, 10 great nieces and nephews and 6 great great nieces and nephews.

Mr. Rutherford is preceded in death by his parents.

Services will be held on Friday, November 15 at 1:00p.m. at Weathers Funeral Home.

Visitation will be held on Friday, from 10:00a.m. until the time of service. Burial will follow the funeral at Claysville Cemetery.

Ralph Pickerill, 86, of Pekin

Ralph Pickerill, 86, of Pekin, went to be at rest with his Lord on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, at his residence. 
 
Born in Martinsburg on September 19, 1938, he was the son of the late Joseph Wilbur and Helen (Feiock) Pickerill.  On August 20, 1964, he married Mary (Gilbert) Pickerill, who survives.
 
Ralph retired after 36 years with Ford Motor Company as a UAW Carpenter.  He was a retired Tyson chicken farmer, raised cattle, and was the founder of Pickerill Hill.   He served as a school board member for East Washington High School and the East Washington Water Corp.  He was a member of Highway Church in Pekin.  Ralph also served his country in the United States Army.
 
Ralph is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary; his 4 children: Kevin Pickerill, Melea Martin (Jeff), Melinda Newcomb (Chuck), and Melissa Pickerill (Greg Tush); 2 sisters: Judy Pickerill (Jim Perchik) and Jean Thompson (Don); 10 grandchildren: Rachel Pickerill (Ryan Cohee), Tyler Pickerill (Zach Sholar), Jordan Riddle, Jacob Riddle, Kelin Nicholson, Aaron Nicholson, Kaleb Nicholson (Rachel), Christian Newcomb, Carson Newcomb (Kayla), and Micaela Newcomb; and 14 great-grandchildren: Harper Cohee, Walker Cohee, Cadence Pickerill, Faith Riddle, Grace Riddle, Brayden Nicholson, Easton Nicholson, Adalyn Nicholson, Brycen Nicholson, Dawson Nicholson, Amylia Nicholson, Salem Newcomb, Hayden Newcomb and Haven Newcomb.
 
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Wilbur and Helen Pickerill; his brother, Larry Dean Pickerill; 2 sisters, Joyce Thompson and JoAnn Leonard; and a granddaughter, Elizabeth Nicholson.
 
Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 15, at 7:00 p.m. at Hughes-Taylor Funeral Home – Pekin Chapel. 
 
Visitation will be on Friday from 3:00 p.m. until time of service at the funeral home.

Carl Robinson Jr, age 64

Carl Robinson Jr, age 64, passed away on Tuesday, November 12, 2024 at his residence. 
 
Born in Salem on  October 22, 1960, he was the son of Carl Robinson Sr. and the late Edith Robinson. 
 
On February 1, 1997, he married Lisa (Sanders) Robinson, who survives.
 
Carl is survived by his wife, Lisa; his father, Carl Sr; his 3 children: Nathan Robinson (Marlana), Tyler Robinson-McClellan (Allie), and Taylor Hayes (Marshall); his 5 grandchildren: Levi Robinson, Nicholas Robinson, Elexas Cooley, Aden McClellan, and Emmy Robinson-McClellan; and his aunts, Judy Stoffregen (Victor), Maureen Purkhiser (Mike), Ella Sue Adkins, and Evelyn Robinson.
 
He was preceded in death by his mother, Edith; and his uncle, Ralph Davidson.
 
Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 18, at 11 am at Hughes-Taylor Funeral Home – Salem Chapel, with Caleb Tolliver officiating. 
 
Burial to follow at Gater Cemetery. 
 
Visitation will be on Sunday, November 17, from 4 pm until 8 pm, and on Monday from 10 am until time of service at the funeral home.

Indiana Football Up to No. 5 in Second College Football Playoff Rankings

One of the final four unbeaten teams entering Week 12, the Indiana football program is No. 5 in the second College Football Playoff rankings as announced by the CFP committee on Tuesday (Nov. 12).

The No. 5 ranking is the highest in the CFP era for Indiana. It marks the second-straight week in 2024 and the seventh time overall in program history that IU has appeared in the CFP rankings. In 2020, Indiana entered the CFP rankings at No. 12 for three weeks and sat No. 11 during the final two weeks of the selections that season.

The Big Ten saw four schools ranked in the top-5 of the second CFP rankings in 2024: Oregon (No. 1), Ohio State (No. 2), Penn State (No. 4) and Indiana (No. 5).

No. 5/6/5 Indiana (10-0, 7-0 Big Ten) is idle in Week 12 and will travel to Columbus, Ohio, for a top-5 showdown with No. 2/2/2 Ohio State (8-1, 5-1 Big Ten) inside Ohio Stadium. The Hoosiers will then close out the season against Purdue in the annual battle for the Old Oaken Bucket on Nov. 30 at Memorial Stadium.

Borden man dies in tree stand accident

Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating a fatal hunting accident that occurred on Sunday in Clark County.

Emergency personnel were dispatched to the area near the 27000 block of Jackson Road near the town of Borden after a hunter fell from a tree stand and was discovered by a family member.

Leslie Burnett, 76, of Borden, was deer hunting in an elevated ladder stand and was not wearing a full-body safety harness at the time of the accident.

The incident is still under investigation.

Conservation Officers remind hunters to always wear a full-body safety harness when hunting from an elevated platform.

Conservation Officers were assisted on scene by Borden Fire Department.

Bonnie L. Mosley, 91 of Salem

Bonnie L. Mosley, 91 of Salem, Indiana passed away Sunday, November 10,
2024 at 11:18am, in Baptist Health Floyd New Albany, Indiana. 

Born October 2, 1933 in Apex, Kentucky, she was the daughter of the late
Jewell Cotton and Sybil (Wells) Cotton. 

She was the oldest of 15 children.

She was a former employee of Gould, Clevite Industries, Imperial
Clevite, and Ferraloy all in Salem.  She retired from Meadow View Health
Care Center in Salem. 

In her younger years, she frequently attended
Westside Baptist Church in Salem where she was a member.
She enjoyed spending time with her family and working in her garden. 

She was an avid quilter and made beautiful quilts.
She had been a resident of Washington County since 1950, formerly of
Christian County Kentucky.

On October 17, 1950 she married James William Mosley, who passed away
May 31, 2001.

Survivors include:

Grandchildren: Jessica S. Morgan (Doug) Salem, Indiana: Donald R. Mosley

grandchildren.

Juanita Cotton of Nortonville, Kentucky.

She was preceded in death by her husband James William Mosley, daughter
Peggy Mosley, and son Brank Mosley. 

Brothers Curtis Cotton and Wallace, Earl Cotton, and sisters Alice Zoph, Ruby Parker, Ola Middlebrooks, and Patricia Fay Cotton.

The family welcomes visitors Wednesday, November 13 at 10am at Dawalt
Funeral Home. 

A celebration of Life will begin at 12:00 followed by an
interment service at Crown Hill Cemetery in Salem, Indiana

 

Douglas Edward Hoskins, age 57 of Salem

Douglas Edward Hoskins, age 57 of Salem, passed away Thursday, November
7, 2024, in Ascension St. Vincent Salem Hospital.

Born January 3, 1967 in Salem, Indiana, to Willie and Betty (Napier)
Hoskins.

He was a Police Officer and Detective for the city of Salem for many
years before transferring to the Salem Fire Department where he retired.

In March 2022, he married Michelle Lee (Flinchum) Hoskins.

Survivors include his wife Michelle, daughter Lexus (Dominic) Light of
New Albany; Sons: Steven Hoskins, Kody and Kyle (Lindsey) Crane all of
Salem;Brothers Marvin Hoskins, John Rader Hoskins and Sam Hoskins, 2
sisters Ruby (Hoskins) Baker and Beverly (Hoskins) Gregory.
Grandchildren Khloe, Macie, Maverick and Lia.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers Melvin and Michael
Pearl Hoskins, a sister Shirley (Hoskins) Alexander.

Betty Jane Routh, age 93 of Salem

Betty Jane Routh, age 93 of Salem, Indiana passed away Sunday, November 10, 2024 at 11:30 pm, in Salem Crossing Nursing Home.

Born July 1, 1931 in Salem, she was the daughter of the late John James O’Hara and Helen R. (Reinhardt) O’Hara.

She was a member of Graceland Baptist Church of Salem and had been a life resident of Salem.  She retired at 65 after 32 years with the Salem Hospital working in the cafeteria.

On July 4, 1955 she married Santford P. Routh, Jr., who passed away May 1, 2006 . 

She is survived by: Daughter: Sandra K. Korff of Salem, Indiana; 2 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren and Friends and Caregivers: Angela Phipps and Family; 

She was preceded in death by Son: Mark P. Routh. 

Visitation: 11 am to 2 pm Saturday, November 16th at Dawalt Funeral Home.   
Funeral Service: 2:00 pm Saturday at Dawalt Funeral Home  with Leo Rumshlag officiating. Committal and Interment will follow at Crown Hill Cemetery in Salem, Indiana.

John Alan Stivers, age 65, of Campbellsburg

John Alan Stivers, age 65, of Campbellsburg, passed away Friday, November 8 at his home. 

Mr. Stivers was born December 20, 1958 in Salem the son of Arthur Goble and Alice Marie Kay Stivers. He was retired from Lee Farms. 

He is survived by two sons: John Stivers and Travis Stivers both of Campbellsburg, a brother: Eugene Stivers of Salem, three sisters: Nancy of Orleans, Mary Bowers of Medora, and Cindy Sparks of Lepsic, and two grandchildren: Caitlin and Layne Stivers. 

He is preceded in death by a son: Chad Stivers and his parents. 

Cremation was chosen a celebration of life will be held at a later date.
