Hoosiers have until midnight to register or update registration

INDIANAPOLIS (October 9, 2018) –Are you registered to vote? If you want to have your say in the November 6th midterm election, you need to register today. Voters registering in the county clerk’s office must do so by close of business, and voters registering online have until midnight.

Hoosiers can register to vote online by using the Indiana Voters app (available on iPhone and Android), by visiting www.IndianaVoters.com, or by texting ‘Indiana’ to 28683.

In addition to registration, the Indiana Voters app allows Hoosiers to look up their polling place, get directions to their polling location, find out who’s on their ballot, track their absentee ballot application or provisional ballot information and contact local election officials.

In order to be eligible to register to vote, you must:

  • be a citizen of the United States,
  • be at least 18 years old by Election Day,
  • have lived in your precinct for at least 30 days before the election; and
  • not currently be imprisoned after being convicted of a crime.

“I urge all Hoosiers to exercise their right to vote,” said Secretary Lawson. “It only takes a few minutes to register and can be done online at any time.”

Voters with questions can call the Hoosier Voter Hotline at 866-IN-1-VOTE.

US pilot Michael Goulian kisses the bricks with win in Indianapolis

Michael Goulian Becomes the First American to Win a USA Red Bull Air Race Stop Since 2008

Sunday over 40,000 spectators witnessed racing history as pilot Michael Goulian became the first American to win the Indianapolis stop of the Red Bull Air Race World Championship, currently in its third year at the iconic Motor Speedway. Intense racing action was paired with a beautiful summer-like day, as pilots raced the most technical course of the season, reaching speeds of 230mph while enduring forces of up to 10G as they navigated a low-level slalom track marked by 80-foot-high, air-filled pylons.

Master Class pilot Michael Goulian was fighting back tears after a hard-fought victory, especially when he barely made it out of Sunday’s opening round as the fastest loser. Meanwhile, his two remaining rivals for the World Championship, Czech pilot MartinŠonka and Australia’s Matt Hall, stumbled, as American Kirby Chambliss outflew Šonka in the Round of 14, and Hall hit a pylon in the Round of 8. In the Final 4, Goulian was rock solid, delivering a time of 1:06.208 and solidifying the victory.

“It’s a big day. Right now, the season doesn’t even mean anything, because to win at Indy is amazing,” said Goulian, his emotion evident as he realized that he would be able to kiss the famous Indy bricks like the Indianapolis 500 heroes of his childhood. “Sometimes the day just works out for you, and today it did. It feels great to win here.”

Goulian’s Indianapolis result propelled him back to the top of the standings at 70 points, while Šonka is now second at 65 and Hall holds 63. With only seven total points separating the trio, only one thing is sure – the season finale in Fort Worth, Texas this November will crown a first-time Red Bull Air Race World Champion.

In the Challenger Class, American pilot Kevin Coleman was looking for his first win in home skies as he appeared unbeatable, blazing to a Challenger Class track record of 1:09.660. Bergér, who has won the past two overall Challenger Cup titles, knew he had to perform if he was going to have any chance for an overall hat-trick, and perform he did, clocking 1:09.397 to deny Coleman’s dream.

Don’t miss the season finale: Tickets are on sale now for the crowning stop of the 2018 Red Bull Air Race season at Texas Motor Speedway on November 117-18. For more information on tickets and all the latest, visit www.redbullairrace.com

Throwback Thursday – Historically Speaking

0

Happy Throwback!  For a deeper appreciation of our county’s history and its impact on the world, I once again switch from places to natives of Washington County.  Allow me to introduce you to Arthur Armstrong Denny, born in between Salem and Kossuth in 1822.

His family & parents migrated here in 1815 from Kentucky and later left for Illinois in 1834, where they lived for 16 years.  During that time, John Denny, the father of the subject of this throwback, formed a friendship with Abraham Lincoln.  In 1851, Arthur A. Denny was appointed the leader of a group of immigrants who were migrating west across the Oregon Trail.  They were known as the Denny Wagon Train and departed for the 108 day trip, from Cherry Grove, Illinois on April 10th, 1851.  Arriving in Portland in late August, Arthur sent his brother, David & another settler, John Low, north to the present site of the Puget Sound to explore the possibility of settling next to deep water.

In November of that year, Arthur led a party of 12 adults and 12 children to settle the new frontier of Alki Point, the site of present day Seattle, Washington.  In 1853, he was appointed the first postmaster and was the town’s leading merchant, he served from 1853 to 1857 in the Washington Territorial House of Representatives and was the President of the Seattle and Walla Walla Railroad.  He became the richest man in the state of Washington and in 1864 was elected to the 39th US Congress.  Many sites in and around the state of Washington are named in his honor, he died there in 1899.

You can read much more about this man in the next edition (winter) of The Historian magazine, which you can purchase at the Stevens Museum!

So yeah, Seattle, Washington,….you’re welcome!  Washington County History is awesome!

Enjoy the day and make it Historic!

Hunters Need To Watch For Purple Paint

0

Hunters, anglers, trappers and anyone else who enjoys time in the woods will need to be aware of a new law that took effect July 1 and watch for the purple paint.

Per Indiana Code (IC 35-43-2-2), landowners may mark no-trespassing areas of their property with purple paint instead of no-trespassing signs.

The purple-paint perimeter serves the same legal purpose as a “No Trespassing” sign. Painting can be done around the perimeter of the area where entry is denied on either trees or posts.

purple2.jpg

The purple marks must be readily visible to any person approaching the property.

For more information, see IC 35-43-2-2 at iga.IN.gov
