Reba P. Farlow, 87 of Paoli

Reba P. Farlow, 87 of Paoli, Indiana, passed away Monday, August 27, 2018, at StoneBridge Health Campus, in Bedford Indiana.

She was born September 15, 1930 in Paoli, Indiana to Earl Hawkins and Sarah Riley Hawkins. She married Russell Ed Farlow on February 25, 1951.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Charles, Fred and Harold Hawkins, two sisters Mary Hawkins Wolfe and Dorothy Hawkins Williams.

She retired from Electricom and also worked at Paoli Chair Company in Paoli, Indiana.

She was a member of Paoli Friends Meeting and Delta Chapter Tri Kappa in Paoli, Indiana.

She was a graduate of Paoli High School Class of 1946.

She enjoyed yard work, gardening, and flowers, she loved being with her children and
grandchildren.

Also surviving Reba P. Farlow are four grandchildren, Paul Farlow, Mary Elizabeth Metzger,
Anna Marie Wright and Greta Kubik.

Funeral Services will be 11:00 A.M. Friday August 31, 2018 at the Dillman-Scott Funeral Home with Dan Smetzer officiating. Interment will follow in the Paoli Community Cemetery.

Visitation to be held Thursday August 30, 2018 from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. and from 9:00 A.M. until time of service on Friday at the Dillman-Scott Funeral Home, 226 West Campbell Street, Paoli, Indiana.

Violet Marie Davis, age 92

Violet Marie Davis, age 92, passed away Sunday, August 26, 2018 at
Harrison County Hospital.

Violet was born September 28, 1925 at the family farm near Ramsey, Indiana to the late Noble H. and Ada Wurm Flock. She was a home maker, member of Ramsey-Spencer Grange No. 2215, secretary for the Old Lake Club, member of Spencer Township Home
Demonstration Club and Unity Chapel United Methodist Church.

Also, preceding her in death were her beloved husband, Jay W. Davis;
brothers, Kenneth and Claude Flock; sisters, Ethel M. Davis & Helen
Hickman.

Surviving are
3 daughters: Stella Johnston (John) of Indianapolis, IN
Rebecca Smith (Ronald) of Ramsey, IN
Pamela Davis of Salem, IN
4 Grandchildren: Jacqui Johnston, John Johnston, Jr. (Lana), Lana Schroeder

Ron Clark, Salem

Ron Clark of Salem, Indiana passed away August 29th 2018 in his residence.

Born December 23, 1949 in Columbus, Indiana, he was the son of Joe R. Clark and Joan (Roberts) Clark.

On September 3, 1971 he married Vicki (Nicholson) Clark. They were married for almost 48 years.

Ron was a life resident of Washington County, a graduate of Salem high school Class of 1968, a veteran of the Vietnam war and attended the First Christian Church of Salem.

He was an employee of the old Smith Cabinet Factory in Salem, a former employee of John Jones Auto Group and Lucas Oil Products, Inc. He was also a member of the Random Ryders Car Club and loved working on his hotrods.

Survivors include:
Wife: Vicki Clark of Salem;
Son: Joel Clark (Beth) of Greenville, South Carolina;
Daughter: Amanda Jo Chastain (Tyson) of Salem;
Brother: Jan Clark (Christy) of Bloomington;
Aunt: Billie Joe Haven of Danville, Indiana;
Grandson: Alex Clark of Greenville;
Granddaughters:
Addison Bundy of Salem;
Payslea Chastain of Salem;
Abigail Clark of Greenville.

He was preceded in death by his parents

North Vernon Man Killed in Crash Near Scipio

Yesterday, August 28th, at approximately 4:30 pm, the Indiana State Police and Jennings County Sheriff’s Department responded to a two vehicle crash on State Road 7 at County Road 500 North in Jennings County that claimed the life of a North Vernon man.

According to the initial investigation by Trp. Jacob Tolle, Indiana State Police-Versailles Crash Reconstruction Team, a 1993 Oldsmobile passenger car being driven by Dalton Rinker, age 19, North Vernon, was traveling eastbound on County Road 500 North at State Road 7.  Rinker’s vehicle entered State Road 7 into the path of a southbound 2018 Freightliner pulling a trailer, being driven by Leonel Guillen, age 39, Indianapolis.

Guillen’s vehicle struck the driver’s side of Rinker’s vehicle.  Rinker sustained fatal injuries in the collision.  He was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Jennings County Coroner’s Office. Guillen was not injured in the crash.

It is not clear why Rinker pulled out into the path of Guillen’s vehicle.  The investigation is ongoing.

State Road 7 was closed for nearly two hours for crash investigation and cleanup.

Dalton Rinker’s family has been notified.

The Indiana State Police was assisted by the Jennings County Sheriff’s Department, Scipio/Geneva Township Fire Department, Jennings County EMS, and the Jennings County Coroner’s Office.

Sobriety Checkpoint in Jennings County to be Postponed

The sobriety checkpoint scheduled for this weekend in Jennings County will be postponed and scheduled for a later date.

However, Operation Pullover is underway which means that troopers will actively be on patrols around the Versailles District looking for those who are endangering others while operating vehicles while intoxicated. 

The Indiana State Police is encouraging anyone who observes erratic driving to call 911 and report the driving behavior along with the vehicle description and direction of travel.

The purpose of sobriety checkpoints is to remove those motorists from the highways who are alcohol or drug impaired and pose a danger to all who use the roadways.  Impaired drivers are responsible for billions of dollars in property damage, person injury, and death annually.   

To help to ensure your weekend is safe and enjoyable, observe the following tips:

  • Plan ahead and always use a designated driver.
  • Don’t get behind the wheel of a vehicle if you’ve been consuming alcoholic beverages; call a taxi, a family member, or friend who has not been drinking to give you a ride.
  • If you are hosting a party, always offer alcohol-free beverages and make sure all of your guests leave with a sober driver or allow them to spend the night.
  • Remember, Friends Don’t Let Friends Drive Drunk.  Take the keys and never let a friend leave your sight if you think that they are about to drive while impaired.

If you see a vehicle exhibiting erratic driving behavior, call 911 and give a complete description of the vehicle, its location, and direction of travel.  These reports can be made anonymously.

North Vernon Woman Killed in Morning Crash

This morning, August 28th, shortly after 8:00 am, a two vehicle crash at the intersection of County Road 800 North and County Road 1300 East at the Jackson/Jennings County Line resulted in the death of a North Vernon, Indiana woman.

The initial investigation by Trp. Matt Holley, Indiana State Police-Versailles Crash Reconstruction Team indicated that a 2006 Ford Explorer being driven by Sharlene R. Whitsell, age 59, Seymour, was traveling eastbound on County Road 800 North at the intersection of County Road 1300 East.  

Whitsell’s vehicle entered the intersection into the path of a northbound 2003 Pontiac Montana being driven by Betty Lou Hicks, age 42, North Vernon, Indiana.  

The initial investigation indicated that Whitsell may have disregarded a stop sign prior to colliding with Hicks’ vehicle.

The vehicles collided in the middle of the intersection before leaving the roadway.  

Hicks’ vehicle then struck a tree before coming to a stop.  

Hicks sustained fatal injuries in the crash.  

She was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Jennings County Coroner’s Office.  Whitsell sustained minor injuries in the crash.  

She was transported to Schneck Medical Center in Seymour, Indiana where she was treated for her injuries.

Evidence at the scene indicated that Hicks was not wearing a seatbelt when the crash occurred.  It is unknown at this time if Whitsell was properly restrained when the crash occurred.

Toxicology results are pending at this time however drugs and alcohol are not suspected to be factors in this crash.

The investigation is ongoing.  Hicks’ family has been notified.

Nine Teens In Crash; 4 Killed in Cortland

Nine teens were involved in a late night accident on Saturday in Cortland, killing four and sending the rest to regional hospitals.

Saturday night at approx 11:07 pm, a1992 Chevrolet Suburban driven by Cara Selby, 37, of rural Seymour was driving westbound on SR 258 when the vehicle broke down a block from their home.

The family was having a slumber birthday party for a daughter and the juveniles came out to push the vehicle to the house when they were struck from behind by a 2018 Chevrolet Traverse driven by Elizabeth M Watson age 24, of Seymour.

Killed were:

  • Nevaeh Law, 14, of Brownstown was pronounced dead at the scene.
  • Jenna A Helton, 14, of Seymour was pronounced dead at the scene.
  • Brittany D Watson, 15, of Brownstown was pronounced dead at the scene.
  • Martin Martinez, 16, of Seymour flown by helicopter to Methodist Hospital and was pronounced dead on arrival.

Injured were:

  • Victoria Valdivia, 15, of Seymour. She was the daughter of Selby. She was injured and flown to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.
  • Courtney Arthur female, 14, was injured and flown to Riley Childrens Hospital in Indianapolis.
  • Allerika Henline, 15, of Brownstown was injured and flown to Nortons of Louisville.
  • Victoria Burchard, 15, of Medora injured transported to Schneck Medical Center in Seymour. She was treated and released.
  • Starlit Watson, 12, of Brownstown riding in vehicle with Selby. She was injured and transported to Schneck Medical by Jackson County Ambulance treated and released.

The investigation is continuing . Anyone who may have witnessed the vehicle being pushed by the children is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at 812-358-2141.
