INDOT to Close SR 56 June 29 – July 2 For Culvert Replacement

0

The Indiana Department of Transportation is planning a weekend closure of State Road 56 for removal and replacement of a drainage structure just east of Livonia.

Contracted crews are scheduled to install a new 12- X 6-foot concrete box culvert measuring 72 feet in width over the last weekend in June.

This requires full closure of S.R. 56 from 7 p.m. Friday, June 29, to 5 a.m. Monday, July 2.

A signed detour routes motorists around the S.R. 56 closure via S.R. 337, S.R. 37 and S.R. 60.

Temple & Temple Excavating/Paving of Salem is INDOT’s contractor for this $336,724 small structure replacement project.

Its crews will be present at the construction site—located 0.7 miles east of S.R. 337 near the Hardinsburg-Livonia Road—several days prior to S.R. 56’s weekend closure, then again during the week following the closure.  At times, it will be necessary to flag motorists around these weekday operations.

In case of rain, the schedule will be pushed back a week.

S.R. 56 in Madison Township of Washington County has a traffic count of 2,420 vehicles per day.

State Police Offering $50k Reward For Information in Memorial Day Death

0

The Indiana State Police continue to investigate the Memorial weekend homicide that occurred on Highridge Court in Dearborn County.

On May 28th, Thomas Biedenharn, age 73, was found deceased in his residence in the Hidden Valley subdivision near Lawrenceburg, Indiana.  An autopsy later confirmed that Biedenharn was the victim of a homicide.

Indiana State Police Detectives are continuing to pursue leads in this investigation and the case remains very active.  Information gathered during the investigation has led investigators to believe that more than one person was present with Biedenharn at the residence when the crime occurred.  A newer model “electric or bright blue” four door or extended cab truck was seen in the area of the residence around the time of the crime.

The Biedenharn family is offering a $50,000 reward to anyone who is able to provide information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the individual(s) responsible for the murder of Thomas Biedenharn.

Anyone with information about this investigation is urged to call the Indiana State Police Tip Line at (877)477-1847.

SR 58 Closes East Of Heltonville  For Culvert Replacement

0

Indiana Department of Transportation Southeast District personnel plan to close State Road 58 at a culver location 2½ miles east of Zelma this Thursday (JUNE 14) for up to 30 days.

Contracted crews will replace the existing structure that carries Leatherwood Creek in Pleasant Run Township with a new 4-sided concrete box culvert measuring 16 X 4-feet and 42 feet in length.

A second S.R. 58 drainage structure located 1.65 miles east of Heltonville will be removed and replaced once the initial structure has been installed.

Ragle Inc. is INDOT’s contractor for this $461,365 2-structure project.

Mike Brown To Be New Salem Lions Basketball Coach

0

By the end of this week, Mike Brown will be the new head varsity basketball coach at Salem High School.

A reception and final vote from the school board will come at 1:30p this Thursday. After a six-week search for a new head coach, a committee (including former head coach Hank Weedin) interviewed and selected Brown over the weekend.

A 1974 graduate of Madison and later Kentucky Wesleyan, Brown has been building programs throughout his coaching career — from his first job at Christian Academy of Louisville in 1985, to a 294-113 run over 14 years at Paoli, to a 118-61 eight-year stint at Crawford County.

Along the way, Brown has taken programs like the Lions and used his ground-up approach to build conference and state championship contenders by building from the elementaries up and then reaping the rewards of that foundation.

In 14 years at Paoli, the Rams won nine conference championships, nine sectional titles, seven regional crowns, a semi-state championship and a state runner-up finish. In eight years at Crawford County the Wolfpack went from a 7-14 team to a program that was 19-4 in 2011-12, 18-4 in 2014-15 and the sophomores he coached that season made a run to the Class 2A state finals last year just two years after his departure for South Dearborn.

Brown spent one season at Shawe Memorial in Madison last year and went 5-20, with two wins over Medora, Columbus Christian, South Decatur and Trinity Lutheran.

Brown has already begun working with Salem’s Summer Youth Program and will be developing programs for the youth through high school age.

Pedestrian Struck and Killed While Crossing I-65

0

Early this morning, at approximately 1:00 am, a Columbus, Indiana man was struck and killed by a semi tractor-trailer while attempting to walk across the southbound lanes of I-65 near the 74 mile marker in Bartholomew County.

The initial investigation by Trp. Korry Clark indicated that a silver 2006 Toyota Avalon being driven by Justin S. Mills, age 27, Columbus, Indiana was traveling southbound near the 74.5 mile marker when the vehicle entered the median of I-65 and struck the cable barrier before coming to a stop.  Mills left the vehicle and walked to the nearby I-65 Rest Area.  Upon returning to his vehicle, Mills was struck and killed while crossing the southbound lanes of I-65 near the 74 mile marker.  The vehicle that struck Mills was a 2015 Kenworth tractor pulling a box trailer, being driven by Carlos E. Zepeda, age 48, Greenwood, Indiana.

Zepeda immediately stopped at the scene and reported striking Mills.  Zepeda was not injured in the collision.  At this time, it is unclear why Mills entered I-65 into the path of Zepeda’s vehicle. Toxicology results on Zepeda and Mills are pending at this time.

The crash remains under investigation.  Anyone with information about either of the crashes is urged to call the Indiana State Police-Versailles Post at (812)689-5000.

The Mills family has been notified.

The Indiana State Police was assisted by the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department, German Township Fire Department, Columbus Regional EMS, and the Bartholomew County Coroner’s Office.

Police Arrest One, Still Searching For One in Freetown Burglary

0

A Bartholomew County man remains at large after he fled police investigating a report of an attempted burglary Monday morning in northwestern Jackson County.

Residents were warned of a possible active shooter situation. After WSLM called the Sheriff’s Department at 2:10p, an employee said the all-clear had been given.

Nathan Shepherd, 31, of Columbus and another Bartholomew County man were seen breaking into a garage in the 3700 block of West State Road 58 in Freetown, police said. That incident was reported to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department at 8:13 a.m.

The second man, Travis Mitchell 32, of Columbus, was later found and arrested after hiding in the garage.

Police convinced him to surrender four and a half hours later, Jackson County Sheriff Mike Carothers said.

Indiana State Police assisted Jackson County Sheriff deputies apprehend one suspect and continue to look for another after a burglary in Freetown this morning.

The incident happened on State Road 58 near Freetown.

“The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department is the primary investigating agency and will be sending a news release out soon,” said ISP Sgt. Stephen Wheeles. “One person was taken into custody at the scene of the burglary. One person remains at large. We don’t have reason to believe the public is in any danger.”

Police are asking the public if they see anyone suspicious in the Freetown area to contact police. Anyone with information about Shepherd’s whereabouts can call the sheriff’s department at 812-358-2141. Reports can be anonymous.

Mitchell was charged with intimidation, burglary, criminal trespassing and resisting law enforcement.

He was also charged with false informing when he gave the Jackson County Jail the the wrong.

Shepherd was last seen around 8:30 a.m. Monday in a camouflage shirt and pants.

Carothers said Shepherd is about 6 feet tall and has dark hair, a thin frame and a dark-colored, thin beard.

“He’s not thought to be dangerous, and we think he’s probably already out of the area,” Carothers said.

Police briefly detained a man thought to be Shepherd just before 2 p.m. in the 11000 block of State Road 135 near the Jackson-Brown county line 4 miles away from the incident.

The man turned out not to be Shepherd and was released, Carothers said.

He said Shepherd fled from inside the garage through a wooded area after police arrived and threatened to shoot at police as he ran.

Carothers said there was no evidence to confirm whether Shepherd or Kinworthy was armed.

“No weapon was ever seen,” he said.

Carothers said officers heard loud noises coming from the garage but could not confirm whether they were gunshots.

“It might have been things falling in the garage,” he said.

Police did prepare as though the two men were armed as they called for armored vehicles from the Seymour Police Department and Indiana State Police.

Mitchell was booked into the Jackson County Jail in Brownstown at 2:05 p.m. without bond.

The Brownstown Police Department also sent officers to the area.
