Yesterday, shortly after 11:00 pm, an Ohio man was arrested on numerous charges after he fled from officers in a vehicle and later on foot after crashing the vehicle he was driving.

The incident began when troopers from the Indiana State Police-Versailles Post were notified that a wanted person, Caleb E. L. Ludwick, age 25, Cleves, Ohio was traveling westbound on I-74, entering Indiana from Ohio.  Ludwick was reported to be driving a gold Cadillac passenger car.  The vehicle exited I-74 in Dearborn County and traveled westbound on US 52 towards Brookville, Indiana.

Trp. Kyle Stovall observed the vehicle traveling westbound on US 52 near Big Cedar Road in Franklin County and attempted to make a traffic stop on the vehicle.  Ludwick initially pulled over for Trp. Stovall.  Prior to being taken into custody, Ludwick fled westbound on US 52 towards Brookville in the vehicle.  Trp. Stovall and numerous other officers pursued Ludwick as he traveled through Brookville before he turned into the Riverfront Apartments on Fairfield Avenue.

Ludwick’s vehicle crashed into two unattended parked vehicles as he fled on foot into an apartment building.  Trp. Stovall and Franklin County Deputies pursued him and caught up as Ludwick entered an apartment where he had been known to stay.  He was then taken into custody without further incident.

Ludwick was transported to the Franklin County Jail where he was charged with Resisting Law Enforcement in a Vehicle, Resisting Law Enforcement on Foot, Leaving the Scene of an Accident, and Reckless Driving.  Ludwick is also being held on a Hamilton County, Ohio warrant for Distributing a Controlled Substance.

He is being held pending his initial appearance in court in Franklin, County.  After facing charges in Franklin County, Ludwick will be transferred back to Hamilton County, Ohio to face an initial appearance on those charges.

The injuries to Ludwick’s face (arrest photo) occurred during an altercation prior to him coming into contact with law enforcement and were not caused by law enforcement.

The Indiana State Police was assisted by the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department, Dearborn County Sheriff’s Department, and the Brookville Police Department.

Suddenly the trailer began to weave causing Peters to lose control and rollover. A blown trailer tire may have been the cause.

Smothers of Terre Haute, IN. were both transported to Terre Haute Regional Hospital by Putnam County Operation Life paramedics, Peters complained of arm pain and contusions. Smothers complained of a leg injury. Both were cited for failure to wear seatbelts.

The crash was investigated by ISP Senior Trooper Johnny Myers. Assisting were Master Trooper DuJuan Presley-McFadden, Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, Putnam County Operation Life, Reelsville Fire/Rescue and Seniours Towing.

Salem Students Take Top Honors at State History Contest

The Indiana Historical Society hosted the 2018 National History Day competition at Ivy Tech Community College in Indianapolis, Saturday, April 14, 2018.

The Indiana Historical Society (IHS) proudly announces 17 students, representing Bradie Shrum Elementary School and Salem Middle School, took top honors at the 2018 National History Day in Indiana (NHDI) state contest.

More than 500 Indiana students took part in the competition, Saturday, April 14, at Ivy Tech’s campus in downtown Indianapolis.

The 2018 national theme is “Conflict and Compromise in History,” and local students explored topics such as Morgan’s Raid, the Cuban missile crisis and the Salem witch trials. Three local students also qualified to the National Contest for National History Day (NHD).

All first- and second-place state finishers in each junior and senior category are eligible to attend the national competition, June 9 through 15, in College Park, Maryland.  Salem Middle School students Matthew Hurst, Nicholas Garrett and Matthew Johnson took first place in the Junior Group Website category with their project, “Compromise through Writing: Robert F. Kennedy’s Work towards the Conflict of the Civil Rights Movement.”

The National Contest will be the final stage in a series of contests at state and regional levels. Students in grades four through 12 began this year’s National History Day journey by exploring a historical subject and then using their research to create a documentary, exhibit, paper, performance or website.

Students qualified to state by taking part in regional contests where volunteer judges worked in teams to evaluate projects and rank winners. All regional finalists advanced to the state contest, where students also had the chance to win special prizes for Indiana history topics.

NHDI is presented by the Indiana National Guard, The Richard W. and Irene Rooker Family Foundation, TCU Foundation, Vigran Family Foundation and Junior League of Indianapolis.  For more information, visit www.indianahistory.org/historyday or call (317) 232-1882.
