Intelligence Memo Released; FBI Issues Warning

0

House Republicans, with the approval of President Donald Trump, this afternoon released a disputed GOP intelligence memo that alleges FBI abuses of its surveillance authority.

The highly controversial memo from the GOP and Rep. Devin Nunes alleges that then-Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe told the House Intelligence Committee that no surveillance warrant would have been sought for a Trump campaign aide without the Steele dossier.

The memo’s release threatens to further fracture the frayed relationship between the President and his Justice Department and intelligence community, both of which opposed the release of the document, which is based on classified intelligence.

The FBI issued a public warning on Wednesday that the memo omits key information that could impact its veracity.

Rokita Sends Letter To Colts’ Owner Jim Irsay Regarding AMVETS Super Bowl Ad

0

Earlier this week, Congressman Todd Rokita released a letter sent last week to Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay regarding the NFL’s refusal to display AMVETS ads in the Super Bowl program:

“I appreciate your recognition of the NFL as an embodiment of our national values and civic culture. As part of that recognition, I encourage you to urge Commissioner Roger Goodell to allow the airing of American Veterans’ (AMVETS) Super Bowl advertisement honoring the flag and the sacrifices of our troops,” writes Congressman Todd Rokita in the letter. “The NFL should demonstrate our commitment to this fundamental liberty.”

Congressman Rokita has repeatedly urged Americans to stand and respect the American flag.

NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy confirmed Tuesday that American Veterans, or AMVETS, submitted an advertisement last week to the third-party publisher of the game program with the message, “Please Stand.”

McCarthy said the league, which has editorial control over the content, asked AMVETS to consider other options for the message, such as “Please Honor our Veterans” or “Please Stand for our Veterans.” The two organizations were unable to agree on language in time to meet production deadlines.

McCarthy noted a separate ad from the Veterans of Foreign Wars group with the words “We Stand for Veterans” was approved.

Some NFL players have taken to kneeling during the national anthem over the last two seasons to raise awareness of social and racial injustice, issues that created division within the league. The NFL announced Tuesday that an owner-player committee was being created to try to address them.

Commissioner Roger Goodell was sent a letter dated Monday from AMVETS national commander Marion Polk to express the Lanham, Maryland-based organization’s dismay with the league’s decision.

“Freedom of speech works both ways. We respect the rights of those who choose to protest, as these rights are precisely what our members have fought — and in many cases died — for,” Polk said in his letter to Goodell. “But imposing corporate censorship to deny that same right to those veterans who have secured it for us all is reprehensible and totally beyond the pale.”

AMVETS said the same ad was accepted by the NHL and NBA for use in official programs for their All-Star Games.

McCarthy said the NFL game program has “never been a place for advertising that could be considered by some as a political statement. The NFL has long supported the military and veterans and will again salute our service members in the Super Bowl with memorable on-field moments that will be televised as part of the game.”

SUMMIT TO REVEAL HOW EMPLOYERS CAN USE QUALITY CHILDCARE TO IMPROVE THEIR BOTTOM-LINE

0

A five-county consortium consisting of Clark,Floyd, Harrison, Scott, and
Washington Counties is working to help local businesses with childcare for potential employees.

Local employers struggle on a daily basis to find and retain a quality workforce. National
indicators confirm that this trend will continue for many years to come. In this highly competitive environment, local employers are searching for a competitive edge to recruit talent and decrease turnover.

Recent studies are demonstrating that an innovative approach to early childcare/early learning may be the answer for local employers.

The SoIN4Early Coalition and Align Southern Indiana are hosting a summit on Friday, February 23, from 7:45 a.m. – 10 a.m. to explore how employers can gain a competitive advantage through early childhood education.

This free event will take place at IVY-Tech Sellersburg in the Horseshoe Foundation Community Meeting Room.

“The cost of child care alone creates significant barriers for employers as working parents are forced to make critical decisions regarding their employment vs. the cost of child care,” explains Natalie Brake, Early Learning Indiana’s Director of Capacity-Building.

“Employers often lose valuable employees and the skills they bring which affects competitive advantage, innovation, and profitability. We will discuss key data and the impact on employers’ bottom line today and in the future.”

The goal of the event is to bring business leaders, lawmakers, experts in early learning, and community partners together to discuss the benefits of investing in early learning and the impact of the community investment to the overall economic health of Southern Indiana.

Attendees will learn and discuss:
1. The business case for investing in early learning and the return on investment.
2. The importance of early learning and brain development 0-5 on our future.
3. Current access to high-quality & affordable child care data for our local area and
statewide.

Employers offering proactive and creative child care solutions significantly increase morale
while recruiting top talent which ultimately impacts the business’s bottom line.

As an employer, these among a host of other critical factors, are the reason for learning more about what you can do today for your employees, and how child care will play a significant role in the overall economic success of Southern Indiana and our overall State.
