Indiana Conservation Officers investigated an ORV crash that injured an 11 year old juvenile male. The crash occurred today around 1:30pm on Whetstine Road just north of Railroad Road in Morgan County.
The juvenile was on a Monster Moto mini bike and following his grandpa who was on a lawn mower. The juvenile attempted to turn around in the roadway when he pulled in front of a Harley Davidson motorcycle, operated by Wayne Luther (62) of Indianapolis.
The juvenile sustained injuries to his wrist, torso and leg. He was transported to IU Health-Morgan and transferred to Riley Hospital for Children. He is in stable condition. Mr. Luther did not sustain any injuries due to the crash.
Neither the juvenile nor Mr. Luther were wearing any safety gear at the time of the crash.
Drugs or alcohol are not believed to be a contributing factor in this crash.
On December 2, 2017, at approximately 2:34 PM, while traveling on I-265 westbound, Trooper Paul Bailey observed a disabled mini-van on I-265 eastbound partially in the fast lane near the 3.5 Mile Marker in Floyd County.
Positioned directly behind the van was a plain white Ford Crown Victoria with flashing red and white emergency lights on the rear of the vehicle, and flashing white and amber emergency lights on the front.
The white Ford Crown Victoria was completely stationary in the fast lane of Interstate #265 causing a traffic problem.
Trooper Bailey made contact with the driver of the Ford Crown Victoria, John William-Michael Ulmer, 23 years old, from Georgetown-Greenville Road in Greenville.
During the contact and subsequent investigation Trooper Bailey discovered an alleged police radio in Ulmer’s vehicle.
John William-Michael Ulmer was taken into custody and transported to the Floyd County Jail where he is awaiting his first court appearance.
He was charged with: Illegal Possession of Police Radio, Class B Misdemeanor; Unlawful Display of Emergency Lights, Class C Misdemeanor; Reckless Driving-Blocking Flow of Traffic, Class C Misdemeanor and Light Restriction Violation, Infraction.
| On December 1, 2017 at approximately 7:10 PM the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department received a report of a personal injury accident near 774 North County Road 250 East.
One vehicle reportedly had left the scene and continued on County Road 250 East. Deputy Rick Meyer responded to the scene with Brownstown Officer John Long. Officer Long located the vehicle that fled at the intersection of County Road 25 North and County Road 250 East. Meyer was told that the suspect vehicle had struck two other vehicles. The first was a 2010 Ford driven by Lori Sitterding of Brownstown. Lori had 3 passengers and her vehicle sustained minor damage to the drivers mirror. The second vehicle struck was a 2018 Chevrolet being driven by Heidi Caffee, 40 of Brownstown. Heidi sustained minor injuries and was transported to Schneck Medical Center by Jackson County EMS for medical evaluation. The suspect, David Greger, 52 of Brownstown had been driving a 2004 Chevrolet. Greger had left the scene and traveled approximately 1/2 a mile after the crash with one tire missing from his vehicle. When Greger reached the intersection of County Road 25 North and County Road 250 East he lost control trying to turn his vehicle and it came to a stop off the roadway. Greger’s blood alcohol content was over the legal limit. Greger was remanded to the Jackson County Jail for operating a vehicle while intoxicated, blood alcohol content of .15 % or greater, leaving the scene of an accident causing injury and leaving the scene of an accident. |
At approximately 8:38 PM on December 1, 2017 the Jackson County Sheriff received a 9-1-1 call from a home in the 2500 block of South County Road 750 East, south of Dudleytown.
Reserve Deputy Shane Collier was first on the scene where he located Roy Clarkson, 79 outside the residence.
Collier recovered a .38 revolver from Clarkson, who told Collier that two more people were inside the home.
Deputy Collier waited for backup and then officers entered the home where they located Debra S. Newhouse, 53 and her husband John G Newhouse, 48.
Debra is the daughter of Clarkson, and the wife of John Newhouse. The Newhouses live in the home with Clarkson.
It was determined that John Newhouse had one gunshot wound to his right ear.
Jackson County EMS treated Newhouse’s injury at the scene, but Newhouse refused to go to the hospital. No one else was injured.
The case is under investigation and will be sent to Jackson County Prosecutor for review. It is not believed that alcohol or drugs were involved.
Assisting Collier at the scene were CSI Det. Bob Lucas, Deputy Jeff Walters, Reserve Deputy Steve Murphy, Reserve Deputy Charlie Murphy, Seymour Police Department, Deputy Rick Meyer, Crothersville Police Department, and Jackson County EMS.
State Sen. Erin Houchin (R-Salem) announced the Indiana Senate is now accepting applications for the Senate Page Program.
This full-day interactive program gives students in grades six through 12 the opportunity to tour the Indiana Statehouse, observe session debates on the Senate floor, and assist staff with age-appropriate tasks. Students will also meet with their state senator.
“Students participating in the page program are able to get an up-close look at their state legislature,” Houchin said. “Civic involvement is crucial to our democracy, and I encourage students in the area to come to the Statehouse to experience it firsthand.”
The 2018 Senate Page Program will run from mid-January through early March. Positions fill quickly, so it is important to sign up early. Pages are scheduled for Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays during the legislative session starting at 8:30 a.m. and dismissing at 3:30 p.m. Groups serve together on Wednesdays. Serving as a page is considered an excused absence from school.

Gary Alan Blackman, age 74, of Borden, Indiana, passed away on December 3, 2017 at his residence.
Born on March 26, 1943 in New Albany, Indiana, he was the son of the late Delbert Blackman & Doris (Loughmiller) Blackman.
Gary was a Vietnam Veteran serving in the Army.
He was a retired FAA Aviation Safety Inspector Supervisor.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Pekin.
Survivors include his son, Todd Alan Blackman & wife, Beth; daughter, Tonya Ann Blackman; 3 grandchildren.
Preceded in death by parents; wife, Veletta Kay (Purciful) Blackman; brother, Larry Blackman.
The funeral service will be at 11:00 AM Friday at the First Baptist Church of Pekin. Viewing will be from 4-8 PM Thursday at
the Hughes-Taylor Funeral Home in Borden, & Friday from 9:00 AM until time of service at the church.
Burial will be at Martinsburg Cemetery. Brother Jerry Goodwin will officiate. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the First Baptist Church of Pekin.
