Detectives with the Indiana State Police announce the arrest of
Dejaune Anderson, mother of Cairo Jordan, in connection with the murder investigation of her five-year-old son who was found in a suitcase in Pekin nearly two years ago.
On Thursday, March 14, 2024, U.S. Marshalls located and arrested Dejuane L. Anderson in Arcadia,
California, a suburb of Los Angeles.
Authorities arrested Anderson on a warrant out of Washington
County, Indiana.
The warrant, issued in October of 2022, listed the charges as Murder, Neglect of a Dependent Resulting in Death (Level 1 Felony), and Obstruction of Justice (Level 6 Felony).
Earlier in the week, Indiana State Police (ISP) detective Matt Busick in Sellersburg received information from a concerned citizen, which led to physically locating Anderson in California.
ISP Detectives then worked seamlessly with U.S. Marshalls in California, who were able to identify and arrest Anderson as
she attempted to board a public transit train.
Detectives from the Sellersburg post are currently enroute to California to continue the investigation.
This investigation began in April of 2022 when a man hunting for mushrooms located a suitcase in a heavily wooded area near Pekin.
The suitcase contained the body of 5-year-old Cairo
Jordan, who was unidentified at the time of the discovery.

Early Friday morning, Detectives from the Indiana State Police-Versailles Post responded to the Jefferson County Jail in Madison, Indiana to investigate the death of an inmate at the request of the Jefferson County Sheriff.
The initial investigation indicates that the Hanover (Indiana) Police Department booked Misty Williams, 44, Hanover, into the Jefferson County Jail shortly before 9:00 pm yesterday evening on preliminary charges of Neglect of a Dependent, Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of a Hypodermic Syringe, and Maintaining a Common Nuisance.
At approximately 6:00 am this morning, Williams was found unresponsive in the jail. Jail staff attempted to provide life saving medical care to Williams. EMS soon arrived to provide further treatment, however, she was ultimately pronounced deceased at the scene.
A forensic autopsy is scheduled to be performed in Hamilton County, Ohio to determine the cause of death. At this time, no foul play is suspected.
Misty Williams’ family has been notified.
The Indiana State Police has been assisted in this investigation by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office.
On Friday, Jefferson County Prosecutor David Sutter is releasing his findings of a December 2023 Death Investigation that occurred on Telegraph Hill Road in rural Jefferson County, Indiana.
On December 12, 2023, shortly after 4:00 pm, emergency personnel responded to a home located in the 1600 Block of East Telegraph Hill Road near Madison, Indiana. Upon arrival, first responders observed that the house was on fire. Fire department personnel were able to enter the burning structure where four bodies were located. Despite life saving measures, all four individuals were pronounced deceased at the scene. The fire was extinguished, and Detectives from the Indiana State Police-Versailles Post were called to the scene to lead the investigation. Multiple investigators from the Indiana State Police worked closely with the Indiana Fire Marshal’s Office, Jefferson County Prosecutor’s Office, Jefferson County Coroner’s Office, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, and the Madison Police Department throughout this investigation.
The four deceased individuals were soon identified as Naomi Briner, 35, Adelia Briner, 12, Leland Briner, 8, and Iyla Briner, 6. Naomi Briner was the biological mother of the three children.
All four of the deceased were transported to Hamilton County, Ohio where autopsies were performed by a forensic pathologist. Based on the results of the autopsies and the evidence in this case, the Jefferson County Coroner’s Officer ruled the manner of death of the three children to be homicide. The autopsy reports showed that all three children sustained gunshot wounds, which were contributing factors in their deaths. The coroner’s office listed the manner and cause of death of Naomi Briner to be from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
At the conclusion of the investigation, the case was presented to the Jefferson County Prosecutor’s Office for review. Today, Jefferson County Prosecutor David Sutter released his findings that the evidence indicates that Naomi Briner was responsible for the deaths of the three children and herself.
Prosecutor Sutter stated, “This was a tragic case that has been heartbreaking for the community and all who have been involved in this investigation. My heart goes out to the involved families for the tragedy that they have endured. I commend the Indiana State Police Detectives and the other agencies that have assisted in this case. At this time, I am not requesting that investigators pursue any additional leads in this case.”

Officers arrested a 19-year-old Salem man for felony rape and child molestation charges following an investigation by Indiana State Police Detective Travis Baker.
Based on information gathered during his investigation, Detective Baker requested an arrest warrant through the Washington County Prosecutor’s Office for 19-year-old Darrin Mitchell of Salem, Indiana, for the charges of rape and child molestation.
Each charge is a level 3 felony.
On March 12, 2024, the Washington County Circuit Court issued the warrant.
Officers with the Salem Police Department arrested Darrin Mitchell later that evening without incident.
He was then transported to the Washington County Jail.
A Washington County school resource officer contacted Detective Travis Baker in December of 2023 and advised he received information about a possible child molestation involving a student at his school. Detective Baker immediately began an investigation, which included a forensic examination by a sexual assault specialist at a Southern Indiana Hospital. Baker worked alongside caseworkers with the Indiana Department of Child Services, who later coordinated a forensic interview of the child. Detective Baker also conducted further in-person and phone interviews with subjects related to the investigation.
