Scottsburg Woman Arrested For Hiding Heroin In Her Body
A 27-year-old Scottsburg woman was arrested yesterday by the Indiana State Police and charged with possession of Heroin hidden in a body cavity.
It is not known where she was hiding the drugs.
Yesterday shortly after 2:30 pm, trooper Nathan Abbott made a traffic stop on Interstate #65 northbound near the 29 Mile Marker on a blue van for a traffic infraction.
Once the traffic stop was made ISP K-9 Teague was deployed and alerted on the vehicle as to possibly contain controlled substances.
During a search of the vehicle, used syringes, plastic baggies and other paraphernalia was located.
After further investigation it was discovered that the driver of the vehicle, Alexandrea E. Grut, 27, from East Jefferson Street in Scottsburg, was in possession of Heroin hidden in a body cavity.
Grut was charged with Possession of Heroin, Maintaining a Common Nuisance, Possession of a Syringe and Possession of Paraphernalia.
Grut was placed under arrest and transported to the Scott County Jail. Once at the jail the hidden Heroin was confiscated.
This investigation is continuing.
Lawrence County Man Arrested After Fleeing Police
A Lawrence County man who failed to pay for his fuel Tuesday afternoon at a Brownstown convenience store was arrested after an hour in a wooded area west of the county seat.
Cody Lee Jent, 26, of Bedford was charged with theft and two counts of resisting law enforcement from an incident that began at 2:15 p.m. when a clerk at a gas station told Jackson County Officer Adam Nicholson that a man in a red Dodge Durango had failed to pay for his fuel.
Nicholson said in his report he had seen the man in the truck as he drove away from the Energy Plus station on Commerce Street (U.S. 50) on the west side of Brownstown.
Nicholson said he had located the truck about a mile west of the county seat and pursued it.
The driver of the truck, later identified as Jent, failed to stop and turned north off of U.S. 50 onto County Road 350W and traveled about a quarter of a mile before stopping, Nicholson said.
At that point, Nicholson said the driver went north on foot into a wooded area and the man had been ordered to drop an black object he had in his hand.
he man refused to drop the item and police assumed he may have been armed, Nicholson said.
Sheriff Michael Carothers and other county officers including Lt. Darin Downs, officers Rob Henley and Rick Meyer, and county Reserve Officer Brent Terry arrived in the area along with Brownstown officers John Long and John Reichenbacker and Chief Tom Hanner.
Long went to the north end of the woods and saw the male step out of the woods and then duck back in and head south.
County detectives Bob Lucas, Tom Barker and Ben Rudolph also arrived to help with the search. While searching and completing an inventory of the Durango, Lucas learned Jent was wanted out of Lawrence County for battery causing serious bodily injury and the license plate on the Durango had been stolen from Florence, Kentucky.
Seymour Officer Adam Surface also brought his dog to the woods and an Indiana State Police helicopter was called to assist although the canopy of the woods was too thick to look for Jent from the air, Nicholson said.
A search of the wooded area conducted by Surface and other officers eventually led to the discovery and arrest of Jent, Nicholson said.
A review of the dash camera in Nicholson’s squad car showed the item Jent was carrying at the time he fled his vehicle was possibly a wallet.
Jent was transported by jail commander Charlie Murphy and booked into the Jackson County Jail at 6:01 p.m. Tuesday.
Jent is being held without bond at this time pending his initial hearing in Jackson Circuit Court.
Child welfare check results in drug, gun arrests
Indiana Conservation Officers, along with the Washington and Scott County Sheriff’s Departments, have arrested three individuals on a multitude of drug and weapons charges.
Joshua Purlee, 35, of Floyds Knobs, and Deloris Newton, 58, of Austin, were arrested in Washington County, while James Newton, 52, of Austin was arrested in Scott County.
Officers found the girl in a vehicle by herself while her father, Purlee, was in a separate vehicle with Deloris Newton. A search of Purlee and Newton found nearly 30 grams of methamphetamine, marijuana, prescription pills, and cash.
On Aug. 6, Indiana Conservation Officers Robert Brewington and Neal Brewington and Washington County Sherrif’s Department officer Brad Naugle responded to a citizen’s report of a young girl playing alone in the rain at Elk Creek Lake Public Fishing Area.
Both were arrested, and the Indiana Department of Child Services was contacted. The child was transferred to the custody of a relative.
Officer Neal Brewington obtained a search warrant for Newton’s residence in Austin, where Indiana Conservation Officers and Scott County Sheriff’s Department officers found more methamphetamine, prescription pills, paraphernalia, and firearms. James Newton, Delores Newton’s husband, was at the home and was arrested.
Nearly 43 grams of methamphetamine, several hundred prescription pills, marijuana, paraphernalia, and 13 firearms were seized as evidence in this case.
Indiana Conservation Officers routinely patrol DNR properties in an effort to ensure the safe use of the facilities and natural resources.

All charges are merely accusations and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
Bruce Brown, age 65, of Pekin
Bruce Brown, age 65, of Pekin, Indiana, passed away on August 6, 2017 at Kindred Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky.
He was born on May 23, 1952 in New Albany, Indiana.
Survivors include his mother, Joe Ann (Burgan) Brown; 2 brothers, Darrell (Velma) Brown, & Stanley Brown; 2 sisters,
Connie Robinson, & Penny (Ralph) Knollenberg.
Preceded in death by his father, Elbert Brown.
The funeral service will be at 1:00 PM Wednesday at Hughes-Taylor Funeral Home in Borden.
Viewing will be from 11:00 AM until time of service Wednesday at the funeral home.
Burial will be at Olive Branch Cemetery. Merle Harl will officiate.
